I've had a new temporary addition to the household after a bat call I had where someone's cat had brought in a bat... Meet Nobby the Noctule..... Noctules are the biggest species of bat in this country, a good 4 or 5 times bigger than the most common bats (pipistrelles). Unbelievably though, contrary to his current size he is still only a baby (pup)! He's about 4-6 weeks old with another inch or so to grow yet which leads me to the tenuous dog link.... He is still needing a part milk, part insect diet to give him the calories, calcium and nutrition he needs whilst in this growth spurt and this is the milk I have to use... I can't have a dog due to a manic work schedule at the moment but looks like for now I've got a puppy with wings! Little bat fact for you... One of the identifiable features of a Noctule is the mushroom shaped Tragus (Inner part of the ear), as if a slice had been taken through a mushroom which this picture shows quite well. I've got some bat boxes to put up around the home but just waiting to identify some suitable locations I know our esteemed Chair Susie is petrified of bats, I think we'll have to work on that there really is nothing to be scared of with these little guys....
