When Friends made the transition from volunteer group to registered charity, the charities commission made it clear that we needed to demonstrate a public benefit, and not simply exist to reduce our local authority's statutory spend on delivering a stray dog service.
We widened our remit to support stray and abandoned dogs in South Wales - not just in Cardiff Dogs Home, and are constitutionally, morally and ethically committed to helping dogs in need in South Wales, funds permitting. The Charities Commission were happy, and the ethos sits well with us too!
One of our volunteers brought our attention to a plea for veterinary funds for Kim's Home, a Cardiff Sanctuary.

Kim's Home is very close to our hearts. They have taken into their tender care a number of dogs from local traveller sites, which almost certainly would have otherwise ended up in Cardiff Dogs Home. In addition they have taken dogs from neighbouring authority pounds, and found safe rescue spaces, foster homes, and forever homes for numerous homeless, stray and abandoned dogs over the years.
As most of you will know, Friends has 3 fundraising priorities, our Kennel Fund, our Veterinary Fund and our Enrichment Fund. Our most recent appeal for vet fees was for Sally, a CDH lurcher girl with 2 luxating patellae. It was extremely generously supported, and thanks to an amazing fundraising evening organised by Emma and her colleagues from First Source Solutions - who raised £600 - we actually had a surplus of £200.
The Friends Trustees discussed whether it was appropriate to make a donation to Kim's Home from our Vet Fund, and agreed to gift £200 towards their vet fees. Kim's Home have requested that the donation is used to help Morris, a Shih Tzu who will need lifetime support.
Morris
Morris is a Shih-Tzu who was found as a stray a few weeks ago. He was so matted he couldn't walk. He was taken to the pound in the Vale where the vet discovered that he had very bad arthritis in his elbows, luxating patella, hip dysplasia, dry eye, ear infection, grade 5 heart murmur and retained testicle. There was a choice to put him to sleep or give him a chance at Kim's Home. So he came here.
With medication he is comfortable and cheerful. He is now out on long-term foster and responding well to love, comfort and medical treatment. This will be for life. At present it is limited to pain relief and treatment for his eyes; soon he will probably need heart medication. Here he is with Dolly, another elderly poundie who lives here now: Morris has since moved in with a neighbour of mine who dotes on him. But Kim's Home pays for all food, supplements, medication, vets' bills and grooming costs
We hope everyone will join us in wishing Morris a happy and comfortable retirement and would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters, volunteers and wellwishers. Without you we would be nothing. You have helped support and rehome so many dogs over the last few years, for each and every one of those dogs you have given them a life-line, literally.
