Ben is now sniffing his way along rainbow bridge and we miss him terribly. He was a real character, born in 2001 so 16 this year and had fought cancer, liver failure and had a general disregard for his lack of sight and hearing that showed his love of life. But over the last two months he became increasingly frail and confused, although he still loved his walks and food, with the dog equivalent of dementia. We tried medication but he slept more, ate less even when helped by hand feeding and when he stopped enjoying his walks and sniffing around, we knew he was ready to go. He went so peacefully at our wonderful vets, who were amazing and our home is now empty without him.
He was with us such a short time, just over a year, but it felt like a lifetime of love and fun with this independent dog who never let his sight or hearing difficulties stop him reaching the most desirable smells (eg cat poo!) So to anyone out there thinking of adopting an older dog or a dog with different needs, it might be hard at times, but the rewards are many.
Run free and happy Ben, bouncing away like a kangaroo. We miss you.

So sad to hear your news......but happy that Ben had a wonderful twilight time of his life
I really sympathise with how you feel. My husband and I adopted a little scruffy terrier when she was 15 and she was with us for three years. She could be a minx but she was the most wonderful little dog with huge amounts of courage, particularly towards the end. It was a privilege to have her in our lives.
There's a saying......'For every wound, the ointment of time'. It sounds trite but it's true......all our memories of her are good ones even though we still miss her.
I really hope you soon get to the point where all your memories are good ones too - because you obviously sent Ben to Rainbow Bridge with some extra special ones.
And you're absolutely right........older dogs are very special 'people'
Thinking of you and RIP Ben

I'm heartbroken for you Cath, I know how special Ben was, I can't imagine how much you will be missing him Taking in a homeless dog is such a wonderful and selfless thing to do, especially a dog in his dotage, and to give that dog a good life is wonderfully rewarding. When the time comes, as it inevitably does, to give that dog a good death takes more courage and brings more heartache than anyone who hasn't experienced it could possibly imagine. Rest easy Ben, say hi to all our bridge babies, tell them we have never forgotten a single one of them
