Well, if this isn't a face to steal your heart.. Everyone say hello to Nala! Some of you may recognise this beautiful face, as she was a short term resident of CDH about six weeks ago. It seems as though Nala is a bit of an escape artist, but it also seems as though her family aren't coming to collect her. Nala was incredibly timid in her kennel, and spent a lot of time crying and whimpering at the front, waiting for someone to come for her. It was pretty distressing to see, I must admit. This lovely girl is absolutely golden, and as soon as she was reunited with her favourite Aunty Suz, she felt a little safer. We took Nahla into the garden for a little break away from her kennel, and she wasted no time at all in getting to know us. Long story short, she stole a little piece of every one of us. Nala is an extremely gentle and affectionate little girl, and is obviously missing her family. Although she was not coping very well on the weekend, I'm sure plenty of love from the walkers, staff and vols will help her settle in no time. If Nahla's owners don't come to claim her, she will be available for rehoming from 14th June. However, staff at the home will take applications now. If you would like more information on her please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. After taking Crystal out first this morning I was asked if I'd like to take Nala out as she such a good girl & keeps her kennel clean so in need of an early walk. Well all I can say is thank you Rob she's a beaut, gentle, easy on her lead, a little shy but full of love and affection. She'll be top of my list next time if she hasn't be snapped up as she such a gem. Good luck girl (pic on FB) Bx

We managed to take this darling girl out this morning and she is just an absolute delight! It breaks my heart that she's back here again but Nala (or Nahla, Nilar, Nyla - whichever!) takes it all in her stride. She absolutely adores people and she came out to us tail wagging and ready to go. She did whine a little as she parted with the member of staff who brought her out, so they had a quick cuddle and then she was happy to head off with us. She's a gorgeous lady and a brilliant walker. Aside from when there were some interesting sights or smells up ahead, she walked at our sides and with a slack lead. Other dogs were definitely interesting to her and you could tell she wanted to go and play with them, but she was easy to distract and once past them, she was ready to trot onto the next interesting thing. The only time she was a little vocal was when we passed another dog who growled/barked at her first. She responded in kind but with little conviction behind it and forgot about the dog a second later. We showed her a tennis ball but she had a quick sniff and walked on. I imagine she does love to play but some dogs feel like on lead = walkies, not playtime. Apart from the odd interesting smell/sight/sound (she has wonderfully sharp senses. Must be that part Staffie/cross helping her Sharpei side!), most of Nala's attention was on us. Every so often she would look back to us to check we were still with us and to get a fuss. This girl loves a fuss and a cuddle from her people. She's very responsive and is obviously listening out for compliments! We stopped by the second lot of benches along the park path and had a quick sit down to watch the ducks and have a drink. And cuddles, of course! Nala sat with us on the bench and had a cwtch, but there was a lot of interesting stuff around (someone had a bbq and decided not to tidy up after themselves) so we didn't stay for too long. We did have time for a treat or two and Nala showed off her sit and paw, as well as how gently she could take treats. An off-lead dog ventured nearby and Nala was interested but the dog was well trained (his/her owner mentioned that he got his dog from the Home many years ago!) and Nala decided cuddles were much more appealing. She's a stunning girl, so well-behaved, and very loving. We took Vince out afterwards and spotted Nala on our way back out with a potential family and their resident dog, and she was on her best behaviour! Fingers crossed!

Nala was checked in under her pseudonym Nilar today (sorry Nala, I've blown your cover!). I can't sing her praises highly enough, she is an absolute star. From the outset she was very gentle on the lead and kept an eye on me for most of the walk... even attempting to walk sideways at some points! She did seem a little bit timid at times, but I'm sure she'll gain in confidence once she's in her forever home. Nala is a REALLY loving dog and when we stopped for a photo opp, as soon as I sat down she was on my lap waiting for cuddles! She is going to make an awesome addition to someones sofa.

Nala has been returned to the Home She loves people soooooo much, she was finding it hard to cope when she was left, so the staff will be looking for a home where she has human company most of the time. Nala has lived with a dog before, and has been fabulously well-mannered around Elsie (Volunteer Pete's dog) and Bas, so she could live with or without another dog. We're going to get her out for some playdates this weekend, to try to cheer her up.

All the dogs at the Home are special, but there are some that are more affecting and unforgettable than others... My walk with Nala yesterday was an absolute delight and a total breeze. Even though Nala likes to be in front of you, she doesn't pull at all, and the lead remains comfortably slack - which is blimming marvellous given that she had been cooped up in her kennel for nigh on 23 hours prior to our walk! She's a passing interest in other dogs and her attention is held for a bit longer if the the other pooch shows aggression towards her - thankfully this only happened once, and Nala didn't reciprocate the hostility. She's also not bothered in the slightest by passing cyclists and joggers - which is just as well considering how many we encountered yesterday! As it was a hot day, we stopped at the nearest picnic table for Nala to have some water. But no sooner had I sat down than cheeky girl leapt onto the table so that she could shower my face with loving, gentle licks! Aww bless her! Nala will tug at your emotional heartstrings - she's so utterly adorable, and given half a chance will love you with all her heart. She's not coping well in the kennel environment and desperately yearns to be with a forever family. This heartbreaking fact became even more obvious to me when we returned to the Home. I took Nala with me to my car so I could grab a bottle of water I had left in there, but after I had opened the front door, Nala promptly jumped into the back seat and made herself comfortable - she was ready and waiting to go home with me and she wasn't gonna budge! No amount of coaxing on my part could entice her to relinquish her place, and I certainly didn't want to drag her out by the lead. But help arrived in the shape of Rob, a member of staff, who Nala clearly adores. With one gentle pull on her lead and some encouraging words from him, she was out of the car like a shot! Nala has such a wonderful presence - she will melt your heart if you spent time with her. And you will be left with an indelible impression of a beautiful, loving and sweet-natured girl...a bundle of love with a boundless wish to be more than just a memory to someone special...

Nala is just beautiful I took her out for the day with her old pal Elsie and she was absolutely brilliant. When we got to Llandaff fields her manners were impeccable and she was just happy to stroll along which brings me to my next bit she walks on the lead like an angel. She is an absolutely stunning looking girl and she just showers you with kisses. No doubt about it she is all about the love, and if she wasn't close to me she was close to Elsie a proper love bug. So here are some pictures from our day out. "Where we going Elsie where? Where?" "Oh boy look at all this room lets go" "Oh I do like to be besides the riverside" "Today I'm all about exploring" "Treats ok my bestest pose coming up" To say she tugs at your heartstrings is an understatement,a beautiful girl like this deserves a home. When she was asleep in the back of the car I didn't want to move her. So let's hope someone else can see how lovely she is because you will have a loving companion and you'll never need a wash either. Nala if your around next week lets do it again lovely girl. Stay beautiful xx

We arrived at CDH at 10.15am on this bright and beautiful Bank Holiday Monday to find that all the dogs had already been out for first walkies. So we had our pick of the dogs for second walkies and were delighted to be able to take Nala (aka Nilar) out for a walk as we have been waiting for the opportunity to walk her for ages. We were not disappointed. Nala is a dog who wants to sniff every bush and tree en route so although we were out with her for over an hour we didn't get very far. She walks great on the lead, no pulling, although she did get a bit vocal around other dogs. But hey, that's what dogs do!! We eventually managed to get as far as the first set of benches at Grangemoor Park where Nala had a nice drink and took a few treats very gently. She is a really affectionate dog and jumped up on the bench between us and proceeded to lick both our noses. She also likes a good old roll on her back in the grass and I suspect she rolled in something not so sweet (apologies to the staff at CDH for Nala's somewhat stinky aroma when we returned her!). She is a really beautiful dog and has the most gorgeous face, those eyes just melt your heart... Hope she finds the right home soon with people who will give her the attention she deserves. Be warned though, she will lick you to death!!

We took Nala out this morning before it got too warm and she was, as ever, the perfect walking companion. Gentle, affectionate, utterly gorgeous - it's hard to find something new to say about Nala that hasn't already been said ten times over. She wasn't in the best of moods today though, and I think her time in the kennels is starting to get her down. Despite being very loving and gracing us both with a good face wash (so many kisses!) when we stopped for water, Nala was still very sedate. This beautiful lady has the saddest eyes! She had a good cuddle up with Dad before we headed back, and it broke both our hearts to see her so solemn. She did have very watery stool, however, so it's possible she's just got a poorly tummy. We made sure to let the staff know when we got back, so hopefully she'll be feeling better soon. She took her treats very gently and has a wonderful sit and paw under her hat already. She's a smart girl and there's no knowing what tricks she could be taught when she finds her forever family. She checked on us constantly and would even slow down to get a quick pat or fuss - Nala really does thrive on human contact and attention. We passed a fair few dogs and she gave them only fleeting attention, though did become vocal when Kaya came out of the kennels as we were waiting. Maybe she's not a fan of huskies? It wasn't aggressive, just vocal. A little stoat/weasel that ran across the path in front of us did get a lot of attention though, she just stared in the direction it had run for a good few minutes! Nala is a gorgeous, affectionate, gentle lady and I hope it's not too much longer before she's with a new family who'll shower her in all the love and attention she deserves!

You can tell when Nala has been for some respite away from the Home (as much as she is cared for there and loves the staff, she's not coping well in that environment), because compared to when we took her out last, she had so much more of a spring to her step. Her stomach seems to be much better as well! We took a nice walk all the way around Grangemoor park and into the retail park (have to show this lady off!) and Nala behaved impeccably, as usual. Lots of kisses, cuddles, and rolling around in the grass. Nala set a nice brisk pace the whole way but that didn't stop her from glancing back every so often for a fuss, or just to check we were keeping up. She's very responsive and will stop if you do. We had cuddles and treats on a bench at the top of the hill while Nala enjoyed all the new smells the breeze brought over. She did react quite vocally to a few dogs we passed, though once out of sight she calmed down instantly. We noticed that the dogs she didn't react to vocally or at all were smaller than her, so it's possible she feels uncomfortable with larger dogs, but having read and seen how well she behaves with dogs normally, I think it's just the stress of the kennels setting her off. The staff even confirmed this when we got back and had a quick chat. This lady just needs a little patience and a lot of love. If our home life was more suitable for you, Nala, I'm pretty sure we would have snapped you up already. Everything is crossed that your new family will find you very soon!

As much as we love to see Nala and take her for a walk, it does break our hearts to see her still waiting for her forever home and family. Poor Nala is so stressed out in the kennels and she's started to jump up at walkers and staff, and though only ever out of excitement/affection, it's not a behaviour the staff want to encourage. Dale (I think) had a little chat with us before he brought her out to explain a few new rules for our Nala walk - namely that we keep it as calm as possible. This means little to no fussing, especially when she first comes out of the kennel. As much as we want to coo over Nala when she comes out - usually you want a dog to be excited they're going for a walk - it over-excites her and encourages the jumping. So no talking to her at all when she was jumping up, just a short lead and onwards march. After a few jump attempts Nala calmed right down and the rest of our walk was completely as normal. There was some vocalisation towards dogs we passed, though again we just marched on through and after a few seconds Nala calmed down and trotted along with us.
I can't stress enough though that Nala is a wonderful, gorgeous, loving, intelligent, and gentle dog. Though we didn't do our usual ten minute cwtch and cuddle at the benches today, we did stop for some water and praise Nala for behaving so well. It was obvious she wanted to join us on the bench and have a nice long cuddle, so we didn't stop for too long, but throughout the walk we made sure to let her know she was a good girl, and she in turn would nudge up every so often and sniff our hands. On our return Nala was a little vocal, as the Home was getting busier, but she calmed down and waited her turn patiently. Before she was taken back in though a couple came over to say hello, and they had a long chat with one of the staff about our gorgeous girl - fingers crossed! As the staff explained to these potential rehomers, Nala will need work when she's adopted, yes, but it won't be impossible (or even overly difficult) and it will most definitely be worth it to have Nala in your life. She'll give back tenfold in love what you give to her in time and effort.

Nilar - What a precious little lady. After asking one of the staff if there was anyone who was especially stressed and needed desperate walkies, I was told that Nilar, formerly known as Nala, had recently been returned to the dogs home and wasn't very happy. I had seen her being walked before but didn't get the chance to walk her before she was rehomed, and by seeing how gorgeous she was I didn't think I would see her again. I took this lovely girl out for a nice long stroll by the river, you could just see in her eyes that she was feeling very down in the dumps. After a little while walking (and lots of treats and cuddles later) Nilar really seemed to relax. She loved sniffing everything she came across and took a particular interest in the swans we passed. She was pulling ever so slightly so I had a little run with her and she seemed a lot more chilled out. We had a little sit down on a bench and as soon as I sat down she jumped up on my lap, I think all this girl wants is for someone to love her and give her lots of cuddles! She took treats so gently making sure she didn't bite. Nilar needs her forever home!

I know I have only just sung the praises of the gorgeous Nilar but I took this little beauty out for a walk this morning and quite frankly couldn't resist sharing these adorable photos that Nilar so happily posed for! Although I am very sad that she is still at the home she is always a pleasure to walk. I mean, come on, who can resist those big brown puppy dog eyes! Nilar is so gentle and I feel that once you have her trust she would never leave your side. All this girl needs is a big comfy forever sofa and some good old fashioned TLC!
