Alfred, our newbie in Kennel 6, needs all the gentle hugs he can get This darling old fella was brought into Cardiff Dogs Home by the RSPCA, who found him tied up, alone and abandoned... Albert is old, a little bit deaf, very confused because he has lost everything he has ever known and loved.. How on earth Albert's owners can live with themselves, how on earth they can sleep at night, we simply can't imagine. And without a doubt, if they turned up at the Home, Albert would kiss them all over. Sometimes it's a mercy that dogs don't understand exactly how or why their circumstances have changed. Albert would be heartbroken to think his owners had simply dumped him. It seems that nothing short of a miracle will result in Albert's owners coming to claim him. But don't worry old boy, you have us, we'll look after you... Despite having very sore paws, and being a little bewildered, Aunty Cheryl soon found his sweet spot! The law says that Albert has to wait seven days to give his owners an opportunity to reclaim him. If they don't, he will be looking for a retirement home from 29th October. Can you give paw Albert? Hrrrrumph! That's child's play for an faithful old dog... I'm a loving, steady old boy, I'll do anything for a little bit of love... and double quick if there's a treat to be had! If you'd like to meet Albert, or want more information, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Thank goodness Albert is in a safe place now.
I thought this 'Dog's Poem' could have been composed for Albert, and other dogs like him, who are callously abandoned, and yet wait patiently for someone they love, who is not coming back...
A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run He's been here for days now with nothing to do But sit by the road, waiting for you
He can't understand why you left him that day He thought you and he were stopping to play He's sure you'll come back and that's why he stays How long will he suffer? How many more days?
His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry He's sick now from hunger and falls, with a sigh He lays down his head, he closes his eyes I wish you could see how a waiting dog dies...

I had the pleasure of taking Mr Albert out on Saturday and after reading his story I was expecting one sad little pooch to plod out, but I was so wrong! Out trotted Albert, tail up wagging with his happy staffie smile! He seemed very happy to be out, sniffing everything he could see! There was no pulling from Albert, I think he should be 'Sir Albert' because he really was a royal gentleman! There was no bother whatsoever with other dogs! Albert walks at a nice pace, every now and then looking back to me as if to say "come on dear keep up!" I really can't sing his praises enough. You shouldn't judge an old dog by his grey muzzle because as soon as I picked up a stick, Albert's eyes lit up and his inner pup came out as he politely took it from me and trotted along very boastfully, making sure he showed it off to anyone we walked past. It's so nice to see a dog with such high spirits after such a terrible thing happened. When I was at the home earlier today I heard a couple asking about Albert so fingers crossed!

The care Albert has received at CDH must have agreed with him, because when he came out of the kennels yesterday morning, there was no sad staffie in sight! His tail was in overdrive and he immediately went to sniff along the cars and the sides of the lanes, ready to see who'd left their mark while he'd been stuck inside. He was very excited to be out and did pull a little, but settled down within minutes and trotted happily at our sides or just ahead for the rest of the walk. Albert is just the happiest little staffie and warmed to us quickly enough, and though wasn't overly keen on a proper cwtch I imagine if we'd stayed with him for a little longer he'd have been a full on cuddle monster! When we stopped for water and treats, Albert hopped up onto the bench with ease and had a quick cwtch-in, while also investigating his surroundings with his new height advantage! This old lad knows his tricks and he showed off his 'paw' even before we asked. Albert also gave us a lovely sit and waited patiently at every road until it was safe to cross. We passed quite a few dogs and Albert barely showed them any attention - though I don't doubt he'd love to have a good old play with other dogs when given the chance. We offered him a tennis ball and he did carry it with him for a little while - and also took it very gently - but decided our pockets were a better holding place instead of his mouth. Albert does seem to have a little problem with his hearing but he can still certainly hear, and responded to his name when we said it clearly enough. He also entertained me the entire walk back by turning everytime I asked 'who's a good boy?', with a handsome smile on his face each time - so he can hear pretty well when it comes to compliments It's incredible to think that this handsome and happy boy was found in such a terrible situation, and is still so loving and gentle towards peope despite what has happened. No doubt he'll find his new family soon enough and be able to live out his retirement in comfort and with a lot of love.

Lovely write-up Sian. I too had the opportunity to enjoy the company of adorable Albert recently. It was a delight to spend time with him, and it's so wonderful that he is now all Staffie smiles thanks to the dedication of the staff and volunteers at the Home.
And even though Albert is a mature gent, he is no less agile in his advancing age. He's a sprightly fella, so without a doubt will still thrive on daily walkies - plus snuggles on the sofa of course!
Hopefully Albert will be settled in his new special home very soon. He truly deserves a second chance of a happy and secure life with a loving and faithful family.

Like most old folk, who have lived long enough to know that life has it's ups and downs, Albert is trying to make the best of a bad situation. He met Bas last week, and they went for a gentle stroll together down the lane... Albert's paws were still a little sore, so we didn't go far.... Let's get back to the Home Albert! I'll show you around the garden... Albert is such a gentle and kindly old fella, he brought out Bas's softer side, and the two of them mooched around the garden together. There are so many 'interesting' smells in the sensory garden! It's like Facebook for dogs! 'Let's share this post Albert' If you want love and loyalty without having to rack up 10 miles a day on your Fitbit, please consider offering a home to Albert. He's the perfect companion... low maintenance, a great listener, he will never pack his bags and leave you for someone else, he will comfort you when you are sad, make you smile when you need cheering up, he won't judge you if you are still in your dressing gown at 10 o'clock in the morning, he just wants to love someone.

Took old Albert out again today, I'm very surprised he is still there! He looks happier everytime I see him, it seems as though he has really come into his own at the home. As expected he was an absolute gent and a total gem. Can't fault him,not bothered by other dogs, doesn't pull, loves a cuddle and is so gentle. What more could you ask for, eh Albert?! He found a stick which he just couldn't leave behind, every now and then tripping over it because it was bigger than him

giannaj - Have you put in an application for Albert? The staff said he has one application, but they have been unable to contact them by phone, and haven't heard from them.

We have been trying to get a walk with old Albert for a couple of weeks now but he has either been out with another walker or in the garden. This morning our luck was in and Albert was available. He came trotting out, tail wagging (it didn't stop wagging for the entire walk!) and off we went down the lane. I didn't know that Albert has had sore paws, there was certainly no sign of it as he was raring to go! No pulling though, and no reaction at all to other dogs - he is a really good boy. He didn't seem to answer to Albert although I understand he is a bit deaf. But he did seem to answer when we called him Albie, so that is what we did. He loved a good scratch on his back and he wagged his tail even more when we gave him a good old scratch. He is such a pleasure to walk, he made us smile for the whole hour we were out with him. He loved having a few treats and did a nice sit and also gave a paw. When we were in Grangemoor Park he found a nice stick - he was in his element and carried it all the way back to the Dogs Home. We have been walking the dogs a couple of times a week for almost a year now. A few of the dogs have really touched our hearts and Albert is one of those dogs. We look forward to walking him again soon but I really hope that he finds the right home soon. He is such a friendly little guy and he deserves to be snuggled up in the warm on someone's sofa to enjoy his retirement.

I've walked Albert twice in a row and had a lovely stress free time on both occasions! He is a gentle, happy and well-behaved Staffie who loves to trot through puddles and have his side scratched. He barely pulls on his lead, never barks at other dogs and takes treats very gently. I'd give him a 10/10, and would adopt him in a heart beat if I were able to. But for now, I will make do with our cuddles on Grangemoor
