Oh Barney, whatever will become of you? This little lad, with such a happy face, was signed over to the home a few weeks ago. He is said to have nipped a child, who disturbed him whilst he was asleep. A risky thing to do with any dog - but it has since been discovered that 2 year old Barney is profoundly deaf and would have had no warning, whatsoever, of the child's approach. Since his arrival, staff have been assessing him and it is only now that he is being offered for adoption, providing that a committed and knowledgeable adopter can be found. Barney is, in many ways, a lovely boy, with a great enthusiasm for life and a happy outlook. He loves his walks, the opportunity to have a good sniff around and having a break from kennels. His previous owners have said that he is OK to be left alone, for periods of up to four hours, is house-trained and is alright with cats and other small pets, though, obviously the staff cannot vouch for the reliability of this information. Barney appears to have had very little training and may not have been well-socialised as a puppy, as care must be taken when introducing him to new dogs. He is, however, very happy to meet you and jumped on my lap the first time we met! This handsome lad really deserves to find a person who can give him a second chance at life. Deaf dogs are able, with training, to do virtually all the things that hearing dogs do. They just require someone who is able to think outside the box and experience life from their point of view. Ideally a potential adopter will have experience of this problem but, if not, they must be prepared to research all that they can and, hopefully find a trainer who can help them build up a good relationship with their new pet. If you think that Barney could be your new best friend, please come and meet him for yourself. Remember "Friends" only promote these dogs and any enquiries need to be made directly to Newport Dogs' Home, where staff can give you more detailed information. Please contact NEWPORT CITY DOGS HOME. TEL 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm or 2pm - 4pm (Monday - Saturday) or pop in for a visit! No appointment needed. Please note: The home is closed on Sundays. Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include 1st vaccination, flea & worm treatment, and microchip. It is a condition of the rehoming contract that all dogs are neutered/spayed aged six months. Subsidised vouchers are available at £35, this is in addition to the rehoming fee. All applicants will be home-checked prior to approval.

Barney is still at Newport. He loves going for walks, when Julia and June come but really needs his own home, where somebody can spend time, every day, developing a bond with him. This lad has so much more to give - if he can find the right person. He really is trying his hardest to walk the line!

Julia and I took Barney and Margot staffy, for a walk together, on Wednesday, and they were great together. Barney must have liked her, as he gave her a lovely kiss on the nose. This boy is so happy and would, I'm sure, love to meet some more doggy friends. He does need careful introductions, though, as he is desperate to play, and sometimes forgets his manners.
I did do a little bit of training with him, to gain and keep his attention (using sausages, of course!) and he responded really well. He also accepted me touching him, from behind, without warning, and didn't seem in the least bothered. There is plenty of potential in this little dog but kennels is not the place to bring it out. I do so hope that he finds a home soon.

I just can't resist a terrier! I have nothing to add to this thread, except for photo's! Am I adorable? You sure are Barney! From the tip of your little black nose to the fur on your fuzzy little toes! Aw, thanks Aunty Sooz! Then how come I'm still waiting to meet my forever people if I'm so adorable? I don't know Barney, I really don't know sweetheart Barney doesn't know he's deaf, all he knows is he's a dog. To him, deafness is normal, he's a normal little guy, with normal needs, and maybe a little bit extra help learning, but that's normal for lots of hearing dogs too! Hope you find your special person soon Barney

Yep, you're not wrong there Jaime. Barneyboy certainly isn't lacking in the character department! He's a typical terrier - into everything, lively, happy and playful. And nothing seems to dampen this little ray of sunshine's brightness!

We owned a deaf rescue Jack Russell for 10 years, he was deaf when we had him at 6 months old. Unfortunately 2.5 years ago we had to say goodbye to him as he had prostate cancer. He was a character and much loved but prone to bite if taken unawares. In my experience their sight is heightened and can be startled by shiny objects (he bit my arm where I was wearing a shiny watch so beware). I would love another dog but now is not the time as we have our house for sale and not decided on where we will go. Just wanted to say that if he responds well to food you are on to a winner with training just use an extendable lead when taking him out for walks. You can invent your own sign language as long you and he understands what you mean who cares. It can be a fun and rewarding experience. Deaf dogs and probably all dogs for that watch you intently for signs and soon learn what you are about to do and what mood you are in. My advice would be to keep him away from young children though. I hope that Barney finds a new home soon. He deserves it. He does not have special needs really, he is just special. Don't expect a guard dog though, the big bonus with a deaf dog is they are very rarely disturbed when asleep and therefore give you a good night's sleep in return. Good luck Barney.

Totally agree, Jan. Barney does like food and will search for it, when you throw it into the long grass. He is highly responsive to training, but needs someone to put some effort in, several times, every day, to start with. I really like him, but he needs exercise, mental stimulation and a calm home. If anyone has a Barney-sized space within their home, they will be amply rewarded for their work. This lad is definitely not lacking in personality !

During Barney's stay at NCDH, I've been lucky to have walked with him on a number of occasions, but on Wednesday morning I had a golden opportunity to walk this wee chap much further than I've been able to on previous walks. It's thanks to the lovely new volunteer dog walkers that the pound's other precious pooches, who are waiting for their forever homes, were able to enjoy being out in the fresh air too.😊 It was truly wonderful to have the chance to spend more time with Barneydog (and not worry about how much time I had to allocate a walk for each dog). And Barney certainly relished covering the extra miles - with a plethora of entirely new smells to investigate, his snout went into overdrive! In past walks with Barney, he's tended to announce his presence to his canine counterparts, and true to form, proceeded to bark when three dogs came into view walking towards us along the footpath. The owner placed leads on only two of his dogs, but thankfully, the dog that remained off-lead gave Barney a quick cursory glance and casually dogtrotted by. Much to my surprise, Barney stopped barking at this point, and walked silently on with his tail wagging furiously, eager to say hello to the passing pooch. And with his tail still wagging like a crazed propeller, Barney walked past the other two dogs in silence too! Well done Barney boy! The weather might have been dull and showery on Wednesday, but to be in Barney's company was anything but dull. He's an adorable dynamo of energy and enthusiasm, who's definitely not short on charisma and intelligence (it probably won't take him long to master doggy sign language!). What's more, Barney loves to be petted - when he's not sniffing for Wales of course! - so he would undoubtedly enjoy snuggling into his special someone for a fuss. And, boy, does this little fella deserve the love!

Wow, Barney-boy, what a star you were yesterday. Regular walks and a bit of one to one training from Julia, seem to be transforming your behaviour. Barney has (how shall we say) always been a very enthusiastic and excitable boy, but yesterday we all remarked on how calm and well-behaved he was, with both people and other dogs. He has been in the dogs' home for about three months now and, surely, it is time now for him to be given the chance of a new home. Well done, Barney.

Barney was certainly a star on Wednesday Cassie, not only did he enjoy the company of two other residents of NCDH with impeccable manners he was my knight is shinning armour! We went for a lovely walk along the coastal path where I managed to fall over my own feet . Barney was at my side in an instance with reassuring licks & sat as close as he could get to me (on my lap) while I regained my composure. Thank you Barney. Bx

Wow Barney Boy, you have stolen my heart! ❤ You surely are a gentleman! Regular walks and special time with Julia has surely brought out the charming side of you that you kept hidden from all of us, you have transformed into such a loving gentleman.
Barney has always been enthusiastic around other dogs and people, making himself known vocally, however, lately he has been so gentle, calm and composed which has been so lovely to see!
Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers comimg down in rain or shine to spend time with the precious pooches! Your work is definetly paying off and it is most certainly appreciated! 😁🐶
