No words needed........ Shadow arrived two days ago. He has seen the vet and blood tests showed no reason for his condition, other than lack of food. He is getting maximum TLC from the, very upset, staff at Newport and when he recovers, he will be looking for an absolutely first-class home, where he can spend the rest of his days. I will keep you posted.

Speechless. Angry. Sad. Horrified. How on earth could someone have let that happen!? My heart is breaking for him. He's in the best place though, looking forward to seeing his recovery pics.

Will update, with pictures, on Wednesday, but Claire, from the kennels, tells me that Shadow is doing really well. Apparently he is still eating enthusiastically and his motions, which were very runny to start with, are now normal. As he was only 12kg when found, there is a long way to go until he reaches his ideal weight but it's looking good for him.

Sorry to say that we didn't manage to get any decent photos of the lad, as a lot of time was spent with another dog, who needed some individual attention. Shadow is continuing to improve and, in only nine days, has increased his weight from 12kg to 16.55kg. That's a pretty amazing gain and shows that his emaciation was purely due to his being abandoned and starved. By the time we were free to take photos, it was Shadow's dinner time, so it seemed pretty heartless to drag him away from his food, even though staff say that he is starting to get a bit fussy! He is still having Malaseb baths to treat his skin, so, hopefully, we will soon start to see an improvement in this, as well.

Update on Shadow Shadow has been in the tender care of the staff at Newport City Dogs Home for almost two weeks, and although he is still very poorly, we are seeing tiny improvements every day. He is still a little sad.... And although he continues to gain weight - he is now over 17 kilos and was just 12 kilos when he arrived - he still has a long way to go. We gave Shadow the freedom of the grounds today, and he sought out the comfort of the sofa in the Rehoming Hub.. We were struggling to interest him in anything at all, and wondered whether he might prefer some dog company... Fancy a little walk Shadow? For pretty much the first time, we saw Shadow's mood lift a little. He greeted Bas with exquisite manners... And it was off to the park for a bit of fresh air! It was a beautiful afternoon for a gentle stroll around the park. We didn't let Shadow overdo it though, he still has no muscle mass, and will need lots of short, regular but gentle walks to help build up his strength. Christine, who does the weekly pupdates at Newport, has very kindly offered to give Shadow some home comforts while he continues to recover, and tonight he is curled up by her side at home! Shadow will be coming back to the Dogs Home regularly for his medicated baths, and of course to meet any potential adoptors - but this will need to be by appointment, as he will be staying on respite with Christine until the staff and vets are happy that he is well enough to go to his new home. As Shadow seems to be making slow but continued progress, the staff will take applications on him, but please telephone the Home in advance if you would like to meet him, so a suitable appointment time can be arranged. If you think that you can offer this sweet boy a home where he will be safe, warm and very much loved, please contact: NEWPORT CITY DOGS HOME. TEL 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm or 2pm - 4pm. Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include 1st vaccination, flea & worm treatment, and microchip. It is a condition of the rehoming contract that all dogs are neutered/spayed aged six months. Subsidised vouchers are available at £35, this is in addition to the re-homing fee. All applicants will be home-checked prior to approval.

We can't say for sure, the vets haven't aged him, at a guess maybe 3 or 4 years old? But that is just a guess. Chris is taking him back to the vets this morning, he seems to have had a skin reaction, possibly to some of his medication, possibly to his food, or possibly just due to stress. We will keep everyone updated with his progress. x

The vet felt that Shadow was a young lad, no more than two and a half years old.
He does have a very poorly skin, indeed and has been given a three-week course of antibiotics as well as some steroids to give him immediate relief from the itching, which seems to be caused by either a bacterial or yeast infection, brought on by his very poor condition.
Although he still looks painfully thin, he now tips the scales at 18kg, is eating well and is having very short, but very frequent lead walks, when he behaves impeccably. Like many Greyhounds and Lurchers, he is also an excellent passenger in the car, settling down to sleep almost immediately.
Shadow worried us a bit, yesterday, as he was quite lethargic and didn't seem to have much interest in anything but life in a warm home is suiting him and he is now paying attention to everything and enjoying being with you. He has excellent manners with my dogs and has settled in very quickly. 😊
