Please meet Pip. Only brought in today, he is very upset to have lost the only home that he has ever known and found himself in the noisy, unfamiliar world of the kennels. A one-year-old boy, he has come from a home with four young children in it, where the addition of a farm-bred collie pup simply proved too much to cope with. Pip has really unusual markings. If I was choosing a name to register him as, it would have to contain a reference to Morse Code, as he is covered in dots and dashes ! Poor Pip has really missed out on his training and his socialisation with other dogs. He has never been taught a recall and never been let off the lead, as his owner wasn’t sure if he’d come back. I feel that he would really benefit from a home with collie experience and an interest in training, though, until he has settled, we cannot really see his true character. Look out for an update next week. If you are interested in finding out more about Pip, please contact NEWPORT CITY DOGS HOME for more information. TEL 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm or 2pm - 4pm, on weekdays. 11am - 1pm or 2pm - 3.30pm Saturday. Please note: the home is CLOSED on Sundays. Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include 1st vaccination, flea & worm treatment, and microchip. It is a condition of the rehoming contract that all dogs are neutered/spayed aged six months. Subsidised vouchers are available at £35, this is in addition to the rehoming fee. All applicants will be home-checked prior to approval.

I think it's fair to say that Pip had a very interesting day, today. At first he was very scared and was hesitant to approach anybody. Miss Babs wouldn't take "no" for an answer, though, and just sat down quietly on the floor with him. He gradually started to relax and to take some treats from us all. After a few minutes he was so relaxed, cuddling up to Babs, that he couldn't be tempted away, even by a tasty treat ! We thought that he might enjoy a spell away from the kennels, so Julia took him out for a good, long walk in the park behind the home. It must have lasted for about an hour, probably the longest he's ever been on. This poor boy has never learned the pleasure of socialising with other dogs, so he then went out again for a turn round the park with Susie and Bas - initially quite a way apart, but gradually drawing closer together, until they were walking side-by-side. I bet he'll sleep soundly tonight !

Pip is the most adorable doggy ever!! We fell in love with him at very first sight. We walked him first time on Monday and couldn't stop talking about this charming creature ever since! We walked Pip again today and already can't wait Saturday's walk! He is such a darling! Playful, cheerful, well-behaved and grateful for every second of attention. He appears to be very smart and understanding everything around. We are sure his new forever owners will have loads of fun having this little happiness by their side! He always remembers to give a goodbye cwtch too!

Ah Pip! He has become a firm favourite with lots of the volunteer walkers. Now that Pip is getting regular exercise and has been able to bond with people he's so much calmer. We went out for a walk on Wednesday. Initially Pip is very strong on the lead and I'm not sure who was actually taking who for a walk! But after about 10 mins or so Pip began to relax and enjoy the fact that we were out in the warm spring sunshine. A curious collie, he nose was in and out of the bushes and long grass, checking out what he could smell. The route that I walk had a metal grid bridge which unfortunately is not suitable for doggy paws. But this young man investigated the bridge and once he realised the path continued onwards after the bridge, he allowed me to pick him up and carry him across with no squirming or wriggling. Good boy Pip!! This meant that we were able to continue onwards to an area that Pip hadn't walked before. I did wonder how this strong boy would cope with the traffic we'd encounter as it can be busy with lorries during the week but he responded wonderfully, stopping and waiting when I asked him to. We passed one lorry whose driver had the door open and Pip was incredibly intrigued by the noise of the radio coming from the cab and he spent a good couple of minutes coking his head from side to side whilst he listened to a bit of Ken Bruce on Radio 2!! Pip was a delight to walk out on Monday. A nice 3 mile stroll and he was definitely more chilled by the time we got back to the kennels.
As a side note, Pip had a play date with one of our other residents, Max, last week. He had such lovely manners around Max and it was fabulous to see the two of them play together & enjoy each others company.
I don't doubt that in the right family, Pip will be an excellent addition. A loving happy young fella who deserves to find his forever home.

Pip has gone to his new home. he had to travel a very long way, in the car, to get there, so his good friend, Gabor, came to help get him used to being shut in one. What a lovely family came to collect him. Pip will go to training classes, and later, if he likes it, he will have a go at Flyball. considering how much he loves to play, I expect that he will love it! Have a happy "rest of your life" Pip.
