Please meet Jack Terrier. This handsome boy was handed over last week and he is seeking a sofa to kick up his paws on and call home. He is very responsive, easily follows commands and loves a good scratch behind ears, leaning up tall. He is also very calm and easy to approach perfect if you don't have much experience with dogs. Jack would make an excellent walking companion for those early birds, followed by cuddles at home of course! He would enjoy having another similar fun-loving dog to share his new family with and according to his previous owner he is good with parrots too! He can't wait to see you and go on walk with you so don't hesitate to pop in ask for him at the reception! As he has been signed over to the Home, Jack is available to rehome immediately. If you want more information about Jack, or would like to meet him, please contact the staff at Newport City Dogs' Home on 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm or 2pm - 4pm, Monday to Saturday or pop in for a visit! Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include 1st vaccination, flea & worm treatment, and microchip. It is a condition of the rehoming contract that all dogs are neutered/spayed and Jack will be neutered before he is rehomed. All applicants will be homechecked prior to approval.

When Gabs and I took him out to take some pictures we both were amazed about him. He is the dog I can recommend to literally anyone. Even if he would be your first dog or if you are experienced. Due to his age and experience he is one of the easiest dogs to handle in the Newport Home. He is very attentive as you can see from the pictures. He will follow you anywhere and will be always at the ready. He follows commands quickly. Jack has got a very good manner he gets along with everyone and but he is also fine on his own. You rarely hear him bark or whine Jack is an even-tempered chappy who knows when you want to pet him, or take him out for a walk. I'm looking forward to see my new polite friend again next week!

Jack and I put our best paws/feet forwards together for the first time today and decided to explore along the river bank.
Jack walks extremely well on the lead and was impeccably behaved when we passed other NCDH residents along the path.
A little way in to our walk Jack unfortunately stood on some thorns and they became stuck in his foot. He stood patiently and calmly whilst I attended to his foot and although I'm sure it was uncomfortable he didn't growl or whine at all. Good boy Jack!
Not having met Jack properly before our walk today I was pleasantly surprised to find that he really does notice the small things. A bumble bee in the long grass. A splodge of dried white paint on the pavement. What really tickled me was Jack's reaction to some large catkins that we came across. He was really unsure what these large furry things on the pavement were and spent a good few minutes batting at them with his paw and eventually pouncing on them to see if they would respond. You really are a funny lad!
Thoroughly enjoyed my hour out with Jack today and I look forward to having an opportunity to explore with him again whilst he waits patiently for his forever home.

Myself and three children took Jack for a walk on Monday and absolutely fell in love. He was extremely well behaved on the lead despite being very excited about going for a walk. We headed down to the field where Jack enjoyed investigating the puddles and getting very muddy. He jumped a bit at a very loud noise from a lorry going past but after some reassurance was ready to investigate some more. He was fantastic with the children and came up to say hello once he'd settled into his walk. Jack is a gorgeous boy and will make a wonderful addition to any family.

Have any of you walkers come across cats while out with Jack? Just wondering how he is with them?

Have any of you walkers come across cats while out with Jack? Just wondering how he is with them? We have a resident kitty at Newport City Dogs home I don't think Jack has met Sooty yet, but if Jack has visitors I'm sure the staff at the Home would be happy to arrange for them to meet to judge his reactions

Thanks Baglady, I had rung the centre and they were going to try and introduce him to the cat to see. Can see he's been adopted already now though, the woman I was looking for will be disappointed. Lovely news for Jack though. Hope he'll be happy.

Sadly, Jack's back.
Apparently he got a little too big for his boots once he started to settle into his new home, so he has been returned.

Hi, could someone provide a bit more on Jack's temperament please. We already have Smudge whom we adopted 3-4 years ago from CDF so would like a companion but not a competitive/dominant one. For anyone who can remember Smudge (he was one of the first "Dog of the week") Jack looks identical to him, but in white! Thank you.

Jack is a very independent little fella, he likes his own company, and will tolerate well mannered companions of the human and canine kind. He is affectionate, but doesn't like to be picked up. Not saying he thinks he's a large breed dog, but he does demand the same respect, and we love him for that! Jack is not a high maintenance dog. He likes his walks (sometimes) and definitely prefers to walk with dog company. He is a gentleman in every respect. He is quick to show his pleasure and displeasure and although some people might say he is a bit of a Victor Meldrew character, Jack would snort with displeasure and say that actually he is unique! And we wouldn't dream of disagreeing with him

Have taken Jack out several times in the last couple of weeks and really enjoyed our walks. Unlike some dogs, Jack does check back frequently, to see what you're doing and he gives you that great big grin, which is so lovely to see. I've only realised fairly recently, that poor Jack can be a bit anxious, at times. A pile of tyres, in the grass, and the sound of some roofing material flapping in the distance, have really spooked him lately. I suspect that his occasional reluctance to go for a walk with volunteers, is a reflection of this. It's nice to see that this old lad is still capable of enjoying a couple of hobbies. The first is running. He seems to really enjoy it, though you have to be careful that he doesn't trip you up; and he really wore me out today, but it was so good to watch his obvious pleasure in the activity. The other thing I did was to throw some tiny bits of sausage into the long grass, so that he had to really use his nose to find them. A really good way to get him to use his brain and he threw himself into it with great enthusiasm. Hope the grass doesn't get much longer or we will lose the little chap, completely! I hope that he finds a comfy retirement home soon.

Walked this handsome chap this morning. He can be reluctant walking but will with some gentle encouragement and small steps (and little sprints!).
I hope that his perfect family appear soon! He's such a fab boy who has been overlooked far too long.
