Please give a gentle Friends welcome to Missy
We do know a little about Missy's background, as she was handed in by her owner, who simply couldn't cope with a young labrador and her six puppies....
Missy was born in November 2016, so is just five months old. She hasn't had the best start in life, has lived with her mum and siblings in a small flat, and hasn't experienced all the joys of puppyhood. She hasn't been walked on lead (we're not sure whether she has ever actually been outside), and her general body condition isn't great. She has a swollen tummy - hopefully a dose of wormers will make her feel a lot more comfortable, and she hasn't built up any muscle mass yet, she is - *whispers* - a bit flabby, but once she starts to kick up her puppy heels we're pretty sure she will look and feel like a different dog!
At just 5 months of age, Missy is only a pup, hasn't quite grown into those velvety ears yet! Coco - Missy's mum - is a medium sized lab (or lab cross), but we haven't met Missy's dad. Missy still has some growing to do, and if size matters please consider adopting a mature dog. We simply don't know how big Missy will be once she is fully mature.
Missy was extremely anxious when she arrived this afternoon. Her mamma is a happy and confident girl, but Missy couldn't bring herself to leave her mamma's side. Soooooo, we popped mamma into her kennel, and rather than try to coax Missy out of her shell ourselves, we decided to call in the professionals - Bas and Cookie!
Missy couldn't help being intrigued by Bas, and for a while she followed him around at a safe distance....
And she was curious about Cookie, who has fabulous dog manners...
For a little while, she was happy just to play 'follow my leader'....
We just let the three of them 'freestyle' in the garden, and gradually Missy gained in confidence...
And actually started to enjoy herself!
Missy learned more from Cookie and Bas in an hour than we could have taught her in a week! People are nice!
People ALWAYS carry sausages!
And if you take them gently, you get seconds!
Missy does wear a rather worried look on her face, but everything is new to her. Learning to walk on-lead is going to be 'interesting'.... whenever we put a slip lead around her neck, Missy panicked. We are hoping that over the next few days she will learn to trust us, and understand that walkies are a treat not a trial.
Missy was shattered by mid afternoon, and we left her cooling down in the office. It's been an incredibly difficult and stressful day for a young pup....
Dog tired....
Missy will be available for rehoming once the vets and staff are happy for her to leave. If you want more information about Missy or would like to meet her please contact the staff at Newport City Dog's Home on 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm or 2pm -4pm Monday to Saturday or pop in for a visit!
Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include first vaccination, flea and worm treatment, and a microchip. It is a condition of the rehoming contract that all dogs neutered/spayed, and the cost is included in the rehoming fee.
All applicants will be homechecked prior to approval.
