Please meet Isla, a gorgeous young Scottie girl, of 3 – 4 years old, who has landed in the care of Newport City Dogs’ Home. I mean this literally, as Isla was found, early one Monday morning, sheltering in a cat cabin, within the grounds of the home. As the locked compound is surrounded by 8ft tall fencing, we can only suppose that she was dropped over the top. When found, Isla was in a very sorry state. The most noticeable thing was that she could barely totter about and she had very pronounced muscle wastage along her back and on her hind legs. She had fleas, and the irritation from these meant that she was continually scratching and biting at her skin. Large areas of her body were bald and there was a raw patch on her chest. Much of the fur that was left, was matted. That wasn’t the end of the bad news. The vet found that Isla had a deformed front foot, obviously from birth, and an ear infection. Her little body also tells of repeated litters of pups, so she has obviously made a good profit for someone. Due to her very poorly state we felt that this little girl would do better with one-to-one care and Isla was placed in a foster home, to start her recovery. Less than three weeks later, Isla is a different dog. Her fleas are gone, and with the help of regular medicated baths, she rarely scratches now. Her ear infection has proved more persistent but she now has a special gel in them, to clear the yeast, once and for all. Best of all, Isla is happy and very mobile. Regular, gentle, exercise and a good diet have meant that she now has a normal amount of muscle and is taking a real interest in her surroundings. youtu.be/ve-I6Id5Lnwyoutu.be/POnLY47bwWI Isla is a happy girl, who will greet you with glee, in the mornings. She loves her food, sitting on your lap in the evenings and following you about all day. Her favourite game is “find the treat in the grass”, which she plays with great enthusiasm, with my two dogs. Isla has, so far, been great with every dog that she has met. She has excellent manners with them and is starting to play, too, in her own, wobbly way. Although my cat is frightened of strange dogs, I’m sure that Isla could live happily with a confident one and she has been really good with my chickens. House training came easily to her and, providing I take her out regularly, she is completely clean in the house. Car travel is no problem with her and she can be left alone for a couple of hours, without mishap. Isla’s perfect home would be with someone who is at home, most of the day, and who will give her plenty of attention, as she is a really affectionate girl, who adores human company. She would enjoy living with another, gentle, dog, but this is not essential for her, as she loves people best. Due to her deformed paw, Isla would do best where there is a large, grassy garden, where she could potter frequently with her owner, or plenty of short, grassy walks nearby. Uneven and stony ground is painful for her. Though she visits the home regularly, Isla is in foster care, some miles away, so, if you wish to meet her, please contact Newport City Dogs’ Home on 01633 290902, to arrange a visit.

This super dog has now been with me for a month.
This weekend, my animals were cared for by my daughter and her husband, and they were captivated by her, as we all are. She doesn't know that she has any handicap at all, or that her dreadful early life should be something to dwell on, but is only concerned with enjoying today and making the most of every minute.
If our hobby wasn't long walks in the countryside, I can truly say that she wouldn't be going any further, but she deserves the very best, for the rest of her life.
Her coat is now re-growing and her itchiness has gone. She loves cuddles and following you about all day. Isla loves other dogs and has excellent manners with them, but needs a home where she will be a special one to her new owner. She seems to love children, though sudden movements can spook her, so would be best with older ones or adults.
She is a really special little girl and deserves a special home.

I'm in love with her! My partner and I are looking to regime a dog but we live in a flat at the moment (buying a house next year). We've said we won't get a dog until then but I'd love to give little Isla a new home!
What's the rules for rehoming dogs in flats? It's not forever and we do have access to a communal grassy area. I work from home a lot of the time so she wouldn't be left alone and would get plenty of exercise. Totally understand if you don't rehome to flats but just thought I'd ask.

Hi Mel Welcome to our forum There are no blanket rules for rehoming dogs in flats, every dog and every application is considered on merit. However it wouldn't be ideal if Isla had to navigate stairs, and as her mobility is a still a little restricted the staff would want her to have her own garden so she could potter around unhindered. Depending on other factors it's possible there may be some dogs to suit your current circumstances and the staff at Newport would be happy to discuss this if you wanted to pop up. Hope this helps x

I'm volunteering at Cardiff dogs home as a walker and that will have to fill the void until we get a house!

Hiya, My husband and I are looking to adopt a relatively small female dog and Isla caught our attention She's beautiful but I want to make sure we have the appropriate environment for her. We live in a house with a garden but it's not massive. There are steps to go into the house and the house also has two floors, would this be a problem for Isla?

Hi Lou. Hopefully, Isla will soon be in her new home, but do keep looking, as I believe that there may be another small, female, dog coming in soon.
