They don't come much more handsome than Apache! Apache is possibly the happiest husky/malamute mix we have ever met! And little wonder! When he arrived as a stray his coat was in a shocking condition. But a few hours of painstaking grooming later (courtesy staff member Emma)! Apache was looking and feeling like a million dollars! Raring to go play in the garden! The staff will be looking for a northern breed experienced home for Apache. Huskies and malamutes are a bit 'special' in that they are a lifestyle rather than a pet! Owners need industrial hoovers and LOADS of energy, as their coats are very high maintenance, and these dogs are bred to go! All day! They were not born to live in central heated homes watching daytime TV, and many responsible northern breed owners never let them off lead, as they are genetically designed to find the horizon and keep running until they reach it Apache is a very accommodating fella, and was happy to 'sit' for his treats, as long as we kept them coming fast and low! We don't think he's got much of an attention span, but who could blame him when there's fun to be had! If you'd like to meet Apache please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Was wondering how Apache is with other dogs? I have an 11 month black lab at the moment but have kept and bred Alaskan malamutes in the past. I have had five mals over the years. Two males and three females. Four of them together for a couple of years. Bertie my male juvenile lab needs company. i am presently living in a ground floor flat in Richmond road but have a reasonable sized garden. I don't work and I am home 90% of the time. As soon as my divorce is finalised and my financial settlement has gone through I will be buying a house with a good sized garden as I am intending to keep hens again too. I miss my mals very much indeed, they are a most unique breed of dog with very different personalities to other dogs. When exercising them it is highly recommended to NEVER let them of the lead as they are not what I would call recall sensitive. I have found they are prone to thyroid issues and would be prepared to manage this sort of thing. I would love to come and meet Apache Best wishes

Hi mrsdogbite, The best thing to do is give the Home a call to see if they’re still accepting applications for Apache - and they can answer any questions you may have too. If he’s still waiting for the perfect home, get yourself down there to meet him - he’s beautiful!

I was lucky enough to take Apache out for a walk on Saturday, and he really is the friendliest, happiest husky/mal you will ever meet! He was very good on the lead, only pulling when he saw another dog or wanted to go and smell something, and very calm and well behaved generally. He loved having some fuss and attention, and is a real cuddle monster - but be prepared to come away covered in fur! He seems very used to being around people. Even though we were out for over an hour, it still felt like Apache could go for miles more - so you will need to be prepared for long walks and bags of energy if you want to give Apache a home. He is a really lovely, gorgeous dog and I hope he finds his forever family soon.

A friend and I walked Apache for 1h15min today. What a lovely fella! Very engaged with the world around him, loving the sensation of rolling on frost-covered grass, couldn't get enough of it! Even though he's evidently not very experienced at walking on a lead he's incredibly gentle and well behaved, although gets a bit overexcited when other dogs pass by. He seems to have an exceptionally sweet nature. A real snugglebug! He does seem to have a bit of a limp though (although this didn't slow him down or seem to affect his enthusiasm for his walk). He is due a vet check today and hopefully there is nothing serious causing the limp.

We first met Apache (still kennel-bound) at last induction day. He was impossible to overlook - standing on his back legs, towering above most visitors (he must be at least 6'1 when doing that!) and howling loudly. I heard so many people whispering back and forth about "the howling husky" throughout the training. He just knows how to make everyone fall in love at first sight! We were definitely hoping to stumble upon an opportunity to take him out and today was our lucky day as he was next on the list for afternoon walkies when we arrived. We were getting mentally and physically prepared for some extra strong pulling, but Apache surprised us and busted our preconceived notions of northern breeds. He walked like a dream! No pulling, no stubbornness, no weird bursts of energy, just some occasional barking at bypassing dogs. We deliberately took a couple of U-turns and found good "waiting spots" whenever possible, giving other walkers the chance to hurry up the lane as we didn't want to agitate Apache or scare any kennel residents. Apache's barking might be (and probably is) a friendly call at other furry friends as he is not only vocal around males but around ladies too. He is just an excitable character! Apache is the perfect mix of silly & majestic (as you can see from the photos below)! He will require quite a bit of time, energy and resources if you are looking to adopt him, but his temperament is truly great! Exceptionally friendly and surprisingly well-behaved Husky x Malamute!

I think out of all the dogs I saw this morning Apache was definitely the happiest, maybe because of the cold weather??? I was preparing myself for a strong dog, and while he might be that, he was very easy to handle. In fact most of our short walk the lead was slack. He is a stunning boy and really good company. I reckon he'd be ace to snuggle up to on a cold winter night. Good luck lovely boy!
