Some faces just break your heart
Some people thing 'big' dogs are hard as nails
This is Kai, an eight year old American Bull Dog.
He was picked up as a stray, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a family, it just means his family have 'lost' him, and as time passes, it seems less and less likely that they have any intention of finding him.
But we're not telling Kai, because it would break his heart. He is clearly grieving for his people.
When we brought Kai out of his kennel for his pictures, we took him outside for a toilet break first, and once he was outside it was so obvious he was thinking 'Yey!!!!! I'm free!!!!! I'm outta there!!!!!! Now where are my humans?' He sniffed the air for a familiar smell, he tried to pull away, to run down the lane, if Kai had sat nav he would have walked a million miles to get back to his home. He became so distressed we had to take him back into the vet room.
We gave him a soft toy, and he held on to it, like a comfort blanket... it's the only thing he has to his name now.
But all he wanted to do was open the door, and find his family...
Kai was inconsolable when we led him back to his kennel. Once Kai has hit the walkers list, he'll get into the routine of kennel life, and we'll try to help him forget that the family he loved for eight years don't want him any more.
But he's a sensitive fella, the kind of dog you feel will never stop looking for his family. Hard as nails? Nope. Not Kai.
We are still hoping with all our hearts that Kai's owners will come to reclaim him, to take him back home where he belongs, but if that doesn't happen Kai will be available for rehoming from 2nd February. If you'd like to meet him please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm.
