I've just read a very interesting article about Black Dog Syndrome - the overlooking of black dogs in animal shelters for a variety of reason (they don't photograph as well, their faces are harder to read initially, negative superstitions). Here it is: www.cesarsway.com/community/pettravel/Travels-with-My-Dog-Casey-Black-Dog-SyndromeWhat do Friends think about that? Looking at some of the dogs who have been in the shelter a while I wonder if there's something in it. Our shortlist - well, medium list - currently includes: Chad, Pork Chop, Bruce, Freddie, Pepper, Zola, Froggy. All blackish dogs! Though it's very hard to keep the list manageable - have seen Julie? And Tom? And Lucky? And why is Meg still there? And Pickle? etc etc etc etc.

Actually Black dog syndrome has been well known for quite a while with the Rescues in the UK - it's all true unfortunately although doesn't effect popular breeds like Labs nearly as much. It's very sad.
I think also, that with dogs that aren't snapped up relatively quickly, a lot of people just assume that they are difficult/there's something wrong with them and overlook them. This isn't usually the case but its hard to convince them, but this is where the dog walkers tales and photos can make such a difference.

Is it a myth that a lot of dogs don't like black dogs? Fudgie has always had an 'issue' with black dogs, especially big black dogs, and someone told me once that a lot of dogs don't like them because it's difficult (for dogs) to 'read' their facial expressions Poor things

I agree with you Angela, I think a lot of people have the perception "they must be in the home for a reason" about the long stayers. Hopefully anyone reading about Malibu (now Sam!) since he left the home will have this myth dispelt. Thats some list you have there Denice, would not want to be in your shoes choosibg from that list of gorgeous hounds!

Its the same with kittens/cats as well along with black & white ones (CPL recently wrote something about it) - FP noticed whenever they had black/black&white kittens in it took forever to rehome them even though they came in as cute 6-week-old kittens (I ended up rehoming my last kitten foster - no one wanted him as he was black & white yet he had a great personality but he was also getting beyond the cute kitteny stage).

That makes a lot of sense. When we adopted our black cat from a rescue centre the vet said it was good that we had as many people won't take a black cat. I was very surprised. She's such a looker! Aren't people odd sometimes? As for the dogs who get stuck in kennels, yes, I've wondered whether there's a suspicion that there must be a reason why they haven't been snapped up. There are some real sweethearts who have been in CDH for ages. Hopefully, we'll take one...if I can ever whittle my 'short' list down to one. Alicia - you think that's long - it's started out with around 47 dogs on it!

The black cat thing is odd- so many superstitions about them. Those of you that know my Merlin will agree that he is the handsomest creature on Earth and for those of you that don't know here is a pic of him (any excuse ;D) Attachments:

He is incredibly handsome! He and my cat Lulah would have the most amazing kittens. Except she's been done. And she'd probably terrify him. Dx

He's been done too and he is not scared of anything (except tin foil, carrier bags, thunder, fireworks, the hoover- the list is endless actually ;D)

Merlin is gorgeous. It's nice that I can now I can put a face to the name! I'll try and post a photo of my black cat Timothy/Timmy/Tim/Timbo (delete as appropriate), although he was with me well before digital so will probably mean I'll have to get a paper photo scanned.

Keep up with the dog walking tales and photos. I think they've made a massive difference already.

I agree Julie, black staffies are delicious. Here's a photo of my black cat this morning. "Why would you want to look at an ipad when you can look at me?"
