Puppy farms are legal businesses where the products produced for profit/sale are puppies. Many of these establishments are unlicenced and there is no concern for the health or welfare of the dogs or pups.
They are often kept in appalling conditions, with little or no human contact or contact with other dogs. The bitches are continuously bred from until at the age of around 3-4yrs they are physically and mentally exhausted and no longer of any use. They are then usually dumped or disposed of. Because of lack of vet care and indiscriminate breeding both the mums and the pups are inclined to congenital illnesses or conditions caused by neglect which are left untreated.
The numbers of puppies produced is unbelievable, it is believed that an estimated 50,000 puppies are imported from Ireland each year. The county of Carmarthenshire in Wales alone is thought to produce 28,000 puppies a year. Nobody has estimated the impact on Rescue figures as this is where a lot of these pups end up, often because of medical problems.
There are many websites and videos on the net exposing the appalling conditions that the dogs are kept in, the fate and condition of the breeding bitches and the illnesses the pups are found by their owners to suffer from (often permanent or fatal ) One of the best known and influential campaigners in Wales are C.A.R.I.A.D. - The campaign to end puppy farming in Wales - a coalition of welfare charities, rescue shelters and animal rights campaigners in Wales of which 'Friends' is a member. If you would like to involved, or to be kept updated on CARIAD campaigns and how you can help, please see the following posts.
Anybody thinking of buying a pup should be fully aware of the sneaky, underhand methods used by Puppy Farmers to disguise the pups origins. Again the DOGS TRUST has strong advice. Just click the links.
