Friends had a meeting with some of the key people within the council this week, to talk about our plans for the Garden. We were joined by Martin Birch and Clive Hutchinson from Bereavement Services. Bereavement Services are no strangers to the concept of voluntary Friends Groups supporting and working alongside council departments. In 2006 Bereavement Services held an initial meeting for those interested in forming a Friends of Cathays Cemetery group, which is now a thriving group working in partnership with the council wherever possible and supporting the overarching aim to restore the chapels at Cathays. Friends of Cathays CemetaryBack in 2011, before FoCDH was set up, Martin provided very useful advice, guidance and constitutional templates to help us set up the Friends of Cardiff Dogs Home group, and has now very generously offered to help with a substantial part of the work. Friends actually owe them a massive debt of gratitude for being part of the 'inception' of FoCDH, and how appropriate that Martin and his fabulous team in Bereavement Services are going to play such a prominent part in the 'birth' of Friends Sensory Garden ;D
WHICH IS STARTING NEXT SATURDAY
Skip is coming Friday afternoon, the chainsaws, chippers, and a team from Bereavement Services will be arriving at 8 o'clock on Saturday morning to start clearing down the site! Who's coming? It would be great to have as many supporters, well wishers, anyone/everyone who has donated, as many Friends as possible to witness the start of this fabulous project. Yep! It's really happening

Hi Susie I'd like to be there but can you advise is it to help/join in or is just to watch, as I'm not too clear from the post. I can hopefully bring a couple of guys down for a couple of hours to help out if I know how long you plan to be there? Cheers caz

Doh! I'm not around this weekend. Am definitely up for helping with the garden project in general though with a bit of digging or whatever so let me know what other dates you've got lined up. Good luck at Saturday!

The plan is...... I'm going to be there at 8 o'clock to meet the guys from Bereavement Services. I simply can't miss the 'first cut' - it's a monumental moment - and I gotta be there to see it! Anyone who is up for helping on the days (we anticipate it will take two days, Saturday and Sunday to do the clearing down) will be very welcome anytime, for as long as you want to help, but if possible we would really like as many peeps there as poss for around 10.30 on Saturday morning - which will be the first 'tea break' for the workers, and a nice opportunity to take some pics! So helpers - there will be plenty to do! Saturday and Sunday, from 8am until 5 o'clock, even if you can only come for an hour or two! And everyone here who wants to see the birth of something fabulous for our dogs, please pop down on Saturday morning at half past ten - just so's you can say...... 'I WAS THERE'

The tunnel should be arriving any minute ;D
Meantime, there is a bit of ivy clearing which needs doing. The remaining trees and the sniffer posts still have a covering of ivy which needs to be stripped off. Also, we couldn't get the digger up on the bank (behind the stable block), and if anyone is free to get down with a hoe (and a hey) and pair of gardening gloves, it would be great to get this area cleared up a bit.
If anyone fancies this over the weekend, please post here (you may get company) ;D and please please take some 'before' and 'after' pics to post up!

I cut the ivy at the base of the trees and then again about 3 feet up. That means the ivy will die off and then it will be much easier to pull away from the trees. I also did the same with the ivy on the end of the stable block. Rach
