Hi, I'm new to all of this, but we lost our lovely German Shepherd bitch year last August and although I thought we could never have another dog in the house, I am really missing having a dog around. We do work, but I am only a few miles away & our oldest son is nearly 13 & can come home for lunch break. Any ideas as to what would suit us? We love to walk miles & living in the Valleys, we have mountains upon mountains at our disposal

Hello Sian
I'm really sorry to hear about your previous dog. I'm sure you must miss her still. My husband and I both work but we take it in turns to get up a bit earlier and take our two dogs out. There are also some very good dog walking services around who'll exercise your dog for a small hourly fee - you can check with the police as to who has been checked and verified by them. Our younger dog is a lurcher - and while he loves to run, once he's had a good walk, he's happy to settle. Lurchers and greyhounds will often snooze for a number of hours once they've had a good sprint, and if you're not far away, you can always pop back to let them out. We've always tended to have a couple of dogs at a time so they keep each other company. My friend also works full time and has a staffie and an american bulldog. They tire each other out by chasing each other on the morning walk and then sleep or mooch until she comes home. Obviously the ideal for any dog would be to have you with them for much of the time, but I think that as long as they're loved, fed and exercised regularly, most dogs will adapt to your lifestyle - that's certainly what we've found. Maybe take a look at a slightly older dog who won't need quite as much exercise as a real youngster. There are some beautiful dogs in Cardiff Dogs Home absolutely aching for a good home. Why not take a look? Croft Kennels in Bridgend also have beautiful dogs - many of whom have been there a little while through no fault of their own. Good Luck

Hiya Sian, aw I am sorry to hear about your GSD, a home just isn't the same without a four legged friend. There are loads of lovely doggies looking for a home, lots of staffies, which as aBreed are fantastic with kids and are very loyal. Best thing to do would be to visit the home with all the family and take the dogs out for a walk as they are much different out of a kennel environment, and then you can see if cupids arrow hits there are lots of photos and write ups on this forum so take a look an see what suits good luck and I hope you find a new fluffy friend to keep you company xxxx

So sorry to hear about your loss. Why don't you come down to CDH and have a look around.
I'm sure you will find a furry friend to suit

I forgot to say Sian, I think it's great that you've decided to have a dog(s) in your life again. I know a lot of people say 'I can never replace my dog' but you never are replacing - you're just offering a lovely home to a new little personality who needs you. I bet your German Shepherd would tell you to go for it! If you can, why not come along to the opening of the Sensory Garden at Cardiff Dogs Home this Thurs (Valentine's Day). It's likely to be a lovely day with the amazing work of the volunteers being celebrated - and you could have an initial meeting with some of the dogs. And don't be put off by any who jump up at you in their cages - the dogs not the volunteers on this occasion! - they're just desperate to get your attention and be noticed. Take one or two out for a little walk and you're guaranteed to fall in love! Again, the very best of luck

The dogs are not always what they appear to be in the kennels.......see Twizzle's thread... xx
