The newest resident in Kennel 27 is Joey, a gorgeous American Bull Dog. He came in with a very sore neck, probably due to an embedded collar, and has been feeling a little sorry for himself.
But Christine took him out on his first walk yesterday, and he looks like a new dog! Christine has promised to put up some photo's, and let us know how he enjoyed his first outing.

I took this lovely boy out for his first walk yesterday and what a delight he is. He is very strong and eager to go, but will stop when you want him to and pays serious attention when you speak to him. We met a few others while we out and he behaved beautifully with both humans and dogs. At one point I was talking to three people while their two dogs (one on lead, one off lead) wandered around and Joey took no more than a polite interest then sat on my feet while we finished our conversation. He does have a very sore neck and a lot of the old scabs and fur came off while we were out, so I am going to ask if there is a harness we can use until it heals. Joey tends to want to chase traffic, so you will need a tight hold until away he is from the main road. He didn't seem interested in treats, but turns to jelly for a back rub - can't get enough of them. He was such a good boy, he was allowed to be "Office Dog" when we got back - a job he seems to enjoy!

I really do love every woofer that comes into the home. They each have their own story, for most we never get to know their previous chapters but unfortunately for some, their poorly neglected bodies tell us hints of their past. Sadly Joey is one of those poor babies. I'm no dog whisperer but its easy to know of Joey's woes. He'll tell you himself if you're lucky enough to spend some time with this boy. On the back of his neck he has a previous wound (that is starting to heal thanks to the tlc of the staff and volunteers) but Joey isn't bothered by that. If you're willing to spend some time with him, he'll tell you about his broken heart. Initially this boy can look a bit daunting. He's slightly rough around the edges, he's very strong and he barks... Quite a bit. But they aren't nasty barks. He means no one any harm. While out walking he is very vocal but it's like he's calling out for his previous owners. He's still besotted with them. He's like a lost duckling calling out for his mum he will stop and look at every car hoping that his owners have come back for him it's so heart breaking. To try and take his mind off his worries for a short time today, we walked where there were no other woofers or people or traffic. All Joey and I could hear were the rain drops on the ground and we went for a quiet walk in the woods. There was no one around for him to call out to to ask if they'd seen his family, we had some time just to allow him to be a woofer and do woofer things. And he did. After realising there was no one around to try and run up to, to ask about his family, he settled Into a calm pace, stopped barking and enjoyed a good sniff. He loved having treats and waited very patiently and took them very gently. It was only at that time that I could see his eyes and how sad they looked. He really is missing being part of a family we had some fabulous cwtches. He liked sitting on my feet and leaning into me. He loves being close to you. On the way back he enjoyed trotting through the puddles, he really is like a big baby duck When we got back to the home we had a quick play in the garden. It was fab to see him running around with a waggy tail and casing the ball. For that short time it really did seem like he forgot his troubles. It was heartbreaking taking him back into the kennels, he really didn't want to go back in So of you come to visit our gorgeous babies, please don't be scared of Joey and walk past him. He's just asking if you've seen his family and if you have the time, he'd like to tell you his story of how he ended up at the home. He really deserves that forever sofa so that he'll no longer have to pull or bark when he's out walking because he'll be right next to his new forever family, they would have found him and started the next new happy chapter in his life. Big cwtch for you gorgeous Joey.

Lucy your wonderful write up on Joey shows a great insight into his history. I adopted an ABD, very similar to Joey, nearly 24 months ago and have never regreted it. He makes me smile when I get up and I am still smiling when I go to bed.
Their looks are completly contrary to their very gentle, non aggresive and amiable nature. Their bark however makes a very good alarm system. I have now met many ABDs and they all seem to have pretty much the same temprament. I am a great fan of the breed and think that every genoine dog lover should have an ABD.
Joey, I shall be along to check you out.

Called into CDH this morning and spent some time having a chat to him whilst he was in his kennel. When called he came up to the front of the kennel from his sleeping area. I could see when looking into his eyes that he was confused and sad. He jumped up and he would have given me a kiss if he could have reached through the netting. He then stood against the door and let ne tickle him where i could reach. He then pushed himself tighter against the door so I could scratch more of him. Whilst I was doing this he held his head low and kept looking up the aisle towards the entrance door. Was he looking for his family? He certainly was sad and I was taken aback by the size of the wound on his neck. The CDH staff have improved the wound no end. I wish you the very best of luck in finding a loving home who understand your breed.

What a wonderful write-up from Lucy about this wonderful boy, Joey. If you haven't read it yet - have a look - Joey gets the chance to tell a bit of his own story through Lucy's lovely words
I haven't had the pleasure of this boy's company yet - but having had a wonderful collie with the same name - I'm looking forward to meeting this Mr J!
It would be amazing if this fabulous boy becomes part of a family who will really appreciate him. I echo what others have said - never be put off by the size of ABDs - they are one of the soppiest and most gentle breeds around.....and they're incredibly loyal.....but that sometimes backfires on them.....as we've heard from Joey's tale.
Good Luck lovely boy - I am looking forward to meeting you when I'm back in action next week......but sort of hoping I won't get the chance - in the nicest possible way! All love x

Walked Joey this morning with mum (taking over her account until mine is approved!). Lucy definitely has it totally spot on. He is a super friendly boy, who really just wants a cuddle and a chat! We took turns holding the lead as he is a bit of a muscle man and so it is nice to give your arms a rest, really he's just eager to show you around. The initial cries do ease up if you talk to him and you'll find he's a very good listener. He'll even slow down just to hear what you have to say! If you need to tell him something really important the best technique is definitely a tummy rub, he turns to jelly and leans right up against you, a total softy! Lots of love Joey x
