I'm not ashamed to say that I have tears running down my face as I write this.....not ashamed because I have no doubts that Joey was and is worth shedding tears over.
Joey, I am so sorry that you were let down by the people who should have taken care of you - but I am also glad that the last weeks of your life were spent with some absolutely wonderful people who work and volunteer at CDH. I know you were thought the world of by so many - and I hope you realise you were and are a loved and cherished dog.
I am so sorry that life didn't work out the way it should have done for you - but I really hope that you have many lovely hours running with the other wonderful animals at Rainbow Bridge. You're safe.....and happy I hope.
I'm so sorry too that one of the staff members at CDH was injured. I know how much they love the dogs in their care and I'm sure this would have been a tough decision for them.
Joey, I'm sure you had no intention of hurting anybody - but wonder whether the pain of everything you'd been through prior to coming to CDH, just made you lash out. A rhetorical question - but I'm sure you'd answer and say sorry if you could.
RIP lovely boy......and know that you matter......and won't be forgotten

Just a little additional note.
If you, like me, feel the upset when lovely dogs like Joey don't get everything you want for them - then this might help restore a bit of faith.
If you go to your search engine and type the name John Unger and Schoep into it, you'll see a wonderful image. I shan't say more, apart from the fact that it centres around Lake Superior in the US. It's a picture by a photographer called Hannah Stonehouse Hudson.
Ricky Gervais, who I know is a huge animal lover, posted it - and I saw it just minutes after reading the latest news about Joey.
PS - when I say Joey didn't get everything I would have wanted for him - I still know that his last weeks were good because of CDH and Friends - worth their weight in gold

Beautifully said Garrick. Joey was such great fun to be with and I have many pics of him but this one I treasure amongst them all .....the joy on his face is undeniable and it's how I will remember him xx ps the John Unger and Schoep story is incredible. Thanks for reminding me of it.

It's truly heart breaking to read the news that Joey has gone to the bridge. I hope the staff member involved has a speedy recovery and that they are healing well. I found it quite unbelievable that the Joey I came to know and love could react in such a way. He came to the home in such a poorly state, his neck was so sore but the extent of his scars not seen to the eye were the hardest to heal. If I had one wish it would be for animals to talk. I very much doubt they would suffer to the extent they do if they could tell us their stories. Joey tried so hard to tell us his. It infuriates me that the people who abandoned Joey, who left him in his poorly state will have no repercussions to their neglectful actions. Yet Joey had to pay for them with his life and he still longed for the family he had lost. And so to Joey, precious Joey. I was lucky enough to have some wonderful times with you. I hope the volunteers won't mind me uploading a video about our precious boy. I was getting some footage together for a rehoming video for our boy but now I'll use them as a tribute to gorgeous Joey. I don't mean to upset anyone with the music. It was a running joke between myself and Joey that whenever we went for a walk together it would absolutely pour down with rain. Every time. This is the song I used to sing to him when we went for a walk in the woods. Either that or the okee kokee he used to look at me with those sad eyes like I was a nutter. Thank you for the cwtches we had Joey, especially the day we got to have a little road trip, we waited for the rain to calm down as it was horrendous coming back to the home. You were such a good boy while we were out and about driving for the day. When I stopped the engine and parked up you placed your two front paws on my lap and leaned in for a cwtch We sat there for a while just watching the rain drops fall down. I'll always remember that cwtch. I hope it has stopped raining on you at the bridge my boy. I hope you took with you the happy memories you made at the home and the love we felt for you. And I hope there are lots and lots of jumbo sausages there for you Good night precious. You are loved and missed very much. Ah Lucy that's lovely.
Your posts always make me smile (and yes even joeys).
It just proves how much our wonderful volunteers love the dogs and enrich their lives whilst they stay with us.
