Hello,
I hope it is okay to post this here? Spent so much time organising the South Wales Dog and Family Fun Day I neglected advertising these workshops!
Scent detection with Pauline Jackson – Saturday 28th June 2014
The aim of this course is to introduce handlers (and their dogs) to the fascinating world of scent detection. We will be using legal substances in the form of tobacco, gun oil or BBQ lighter fluid, depending on the handler’s preference.
Handlers will be shown how to ‘condition’ the dog to the odour, how to prepare and handler their gifte and basic searches will be developed on lead. We will also discuss the handler’s role in detection work as well as some of the basics about scent, scent cones and scent pooling.
Longer searches off lead will be added in the afternoon.
Note: Scent detection is mentally tiring for dogs and dogs must be comfortable with spending time in the handler’s vehicle when they are not working and at breaks so that they have a chance to rest properly. Dog must be comfortable with this and not bark or become distressed.
Maximum of 12 handlers a day, worked in two groups of 6, handler places are £50/day. No limit on spectators places, spectator places are £25/day. All attendees will receive comprehensive hand outs covering the exercises with detailed instructions and a certificate of attendance. Booking is essential as numbers are strictly limited and payment is required prior to course.
Arrive at 9:30am for a 10:00am start and each day will end with a Question and Answer Session and finish at 4:30pm approximately. Lunch will be for one hour and you will need to bring a packed lunch.

Self control and focus with Pauline Jackson – Sunday 29th June 2014 - Only Spectator Places Remaining
Attention (focus) is the foundation of everything we want/need our dogs to do. They cannot respond to a cue if they are not paying attention and they need to pay attention to us even in the presence of high distractions and when they are aroused/excited.
A great many dogs lack self-control; this may express itself as the dog barking, leaping at the handler, biting/nipping the handler or showing aggression at other dogs/people. This behaviour often escalates the more excited (motivated) a dog becomes and if the handler starts to shout at the dog or get physical with them.
This one day workshop will discuss the reasons why we need our dogs to focus and display self control, as well as demonstrating and explaining various games/exercises that can be used to teach self-control and focus to our dogs. There will be some theory sessions (to enable the dogs to rest between working sessions) as well as practical sessions where dogs will be worked in small groups to begin with and then in larger groups as their focus and self-control increases.
Maximum of 12 handlers a day, worked in two groups of 6, handler places are £50/day. No limit on spectators places, spectator places are £25/day. Pauline was one of my tutors when I was at Bishop Burton College and these workshops should be informative but good fun!
