We have been using flea tablets (nexguard) as recommended by our vets, and Bruce has been having allergy issues which I suspect may be caused by that - as nothing else has changed in his diet or environment. He's had really itchy skin and has been scratching his ears a lot. So I think it's best to go back to something he's had before with no adverse reactions.
So, can anyone tell me what brand of flea & worm treatment they use at the dogs home? He was fine with that.

Hi, Im pretty sure they have a couple of brands they use so if you give the staff a call they may be able to tell you what was used for Bruce. Give them a bell on 02920 711243 x

That's a coincidence as Benjie also has had allergic skin problems and has been on steroids from the vet, we also used nexgard for him too, maybe some dogs are more suseptible, I will now go back to front line or advantage I think like we used to use and found effective.

That's awful, Bruce has been on steroids too and I'm not happy about it. Poor thing is peeing constantly and feeling very sorry for himself. It's interesting that you think nexguard is a problem too because we weren't warned of any side effects and have been desperately trying to figure out what's causing all his skin/ear infections. Poor guy has suffered a lot and it could all be down to these stupid flea tablets!

oo er, I've just consulted my good friend Mr Google. There seems to be a lot of info in the public domain about side effects from Nexgard. It was only licenced in 2013, so is fairly new on the market. I've always used Advocate on my boys, the Home use it, and it seems to do the trick for mine. I have to be honest, I don't flea & worm treat monthly, or even 3 monthly. I treat them maybe twice a year, if I remember, and once I treated them because I actually saw a flea on Fudgie When my kids were small I didn't use nit shampoo on them every week, in fact, I never used nit shampoo on them, as they were lucky enough not to get nits. If that had though, I would have used a tried and tested treatment, once. I wouldn't have used it regularly as a prophylactic, and I don't use anti-elephant spray in my garden, but I've never had elephants either. I think it's a very emotive subject, I know some people who flea & worm with proprietary treatments monthly, and some who have never used prescription or off-the-shelf remedies and prefer herbal or natural treatments, and I wouldn't judge anyone for their preferred protocol. But the minute you suspect a side effect from a pharmaceutical I imagine it's time to question veterinary advice - after all, no-one knows our dogs better than us eh? Healing thoughts for Bruce, I hope you manage to get everything under control

I rarely flea my pair, possibly once a year- they are both short coat & I would see a flea on them if they ever caught them. I use a tea tree oil based shampoo when they are bathed again this is not very often ( worst doggy mother ever). When we do flea then we use frontline touchwood never had any problems. I think it's about trial and error or personal preference.
I hope Bruce feels better soon!
