Please whisper a gentle welcome to Star This young madamoiselle is just a baby, and was brought into CDH 'as a stray'. She was in very poor condition when she arrived, poor baby had a massively prolapsed bowel, pressure sores, and it seems likely that she has been confined in a crate for most of her life. She has very little muscle mass on her back legs, and was a very weak, very wobbly little girl when she arrived. It wasn't clear when she arrived whether her health issues were congenital, in which case there was not likely to be a happy outcome for Star, or whether it was simply due to neglect. After a week of the best of care and attention from the staff and volunteers, the vets have concluded that Star will be able to enjoy a good quality of life, and the staff are therefore taking applications for her. Please note - Star has improved immeasurably over the last week. Her prolapse is visibly improved, and she appears to have gained some level of bowel continence, but her rehomers need to be aware that she may have ongoing issues, and this would need to be discussed with the staff. It will of course be a condition of the rehoming contract that Star is brought back to CDH for speying. In theory, Star is available for rehoming immediately. In practice, she won't be leaving the home until the vets are completely satisfied with her health and welbeing. If you'd like more information on her, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7days a week, 10.30 - 4pm.

So many of our followers, supporters and volunteers will have seen how well Star has been doing over the last few weeks. Summerhills attend CDH every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Star has had formal veterinary assessments very regularly since the day she was brought into CDH. When she first arrived she was in such poor condition the staff took her immediately to the vets as they weren't sure she was going to make it (as previously posted above). As stated above - and this information has been in the public domain since February 20th - at first her future was very uncertain. The vets were not sure whether her problems were due to worm infestation/neglect or a congenital defect. She was given Panacur, Metronidazole, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and external cream for her pressure sores when she first arrived, and the vets have constantly reviewed her medication since.
Yesterday morning, the vets reported as follows....
'Normal movement of back legs' (You will remember when she arrived we said she was 'wobbly' as she had very little muscle mass). As you can all see from Charli's video, which was taken on Saturday, Star had gained weight and strength, and was as bouncy and playful as any little dog, fully able to hold her own weight.
'Some urinary incontinence as running around, v bright & happy. Possible permanent incontinence of urine/faeces although faeces better when solid which may be feed dependent. Slightly formed faeces, keep on small meals'
The had previous reported (on 16th February) that her pressure sores were healing healthily and that she 'looks happy'.
Despite her ongoing health issues, Star had two excellent rehoming offers, both families had spend a considerable amount of time with her in the vet room, playing with her, getting to know her, and the staff shared all the information they had about her. Both families knew and understood that her issues could be ongoing, yet were fully willing to offer Star a loving home.
On February 21st, we received this message....
Fbs Kxxxx Txxx Feb 21st, 8:40am Hi I'm part of French a Bulldog Saviours. We would like to help rehabilitate Star. We obviously have vast knowledge of this breed and are willing to do everything possible for her. Please contact me on xxxxxxxxxxx. One of our fosterers is popping by this morning to see her. Her name is xxxxxxxxxx. She has a frenchie who suffered from prolapse and is very experienced. Many thanks K**** T***
And on Feb 22nd, this message was sent to one of our volunteers...
..... french bulldog saviours were trying to get hold of someone from cdh regarding star, I believe they managed to speak to someone this afternoon about adopting her into the care of fbs x
We replied and advised both the volunteer and FBS
I'm pretty sure a decision won't be made until the manager is in on Monday. We do have one very good rehoming offer, it's a family who adopted a Frenchie from us a year ago. Missy has acute gastric and abdominal issues, but she is doing extremely well with her family, they are raw feeding her, and adopted her knowing that they would struggle to get insurance to cover her veterinary costs. They have done a brilliant job with her though, she is as fit as a butchers dog now! I think the staff will probably consult with our vets on Monday and weigh up whether she is well enough to be adopted or whether she would be better coming to french bulldog saviours. Please don't think that anyone has anything other than her very best interests at heart, if the vets feel she is going to need substantial veterinary support in the near future then it's very possible the decision would be made to send her to the rescue. Thanks so much for being in touch, and I'll let you know if I hear anything in the meantime, but as I said, it's doubtful a decision will be made until after the vets have seen her again on Monday. xxx
This is the response we had...
Awe that's lovely to hear that the last one is doing so well. I foster for fbs and first hand knowledge of bowel problems, mine suffered from multiple prolapses until I managed to control it via diet and eliminate the need for surgery, poor little fur babies are being overbred, thank you much x
So, on Monday, the vets were happy that Star was on the road to recovery, her prolapse had all but disappeared, she was strong on her legs, her sores were healing, and they felt it was time for her to continue her recovery away in a home environment. As the 'rescue' had stated in writing.... We would like to help rehabilitate Star. We obviously have vast knowledge of this breed and are willing to do everything possible for her. and the 'fosterer' had stated in writing I foster for fbs and first hand knowledge of bowel problems, mine suffered from multiple prolapses until I managed to control it via diet and eliminate the need for surgery, the staff made the decision that despite having two excellent rehoming offers, it would be in Star's best interests to go to the 'rescue'.
They collected her from CDH at 3.26pm yesterday afternoon, and to our absolute horror, we found out last night through social media that she had been taken straight to a local veterinary and euthanised. We are utterly crushed by this news, after seeing this little dog come so far, after the promises that were made for her, we really cannot understand why on earth they did this.
It has been posted on the 'rescue's FB page that she 'was in excruciating pain and the vet recommended she was put straight to sleep'.
As Charli's video will attest, Star was not in excruitating pain, as everyone who has spent time with her over the last 3 weeks will know she was a happy, bouncy, playful little dog, who had the most appalling start to life, but who was well on the road to recovery, she had been through the worst, she was mending, slowly but surely, and within an hour of leaving CDH she was euthanised. And to add insult to injury, the 'rescue' who offered to make a donation to CDH, are demanding their money back. If they were unhappy with Star they should have returned her to CDH immediately, the staff would have gladly given them back their money, but to take a dog, have it pts within an hour, and then demand a 'refund' - well that just beggars belief.
Words simply cannot express our deep sorrow, and the sense of betrayal we feel on Star's behalf.
We are all completely and utterly heartbroken.
Rest easy little girl.

Have just seen the inflammatory facebook post and comments in question and feel absolutely appalled at the unprofessional manner in which FBS are handling things. Broken-hearted for Star and for the families that would have shown her love and comfort. Run free little one xx

It's really upset me, this little girl was coming along, then FBS didn't even spend 24 hours with her, to her to the vet and pts. I'm appalled beyond words, it's been on my mind all day! What qualifications do you have to have to be a "saviour" and even if it was the worst case, as an animal lover take her in and feed her well for 24 hrs before just killing her

I have been staring at this page for a while trying to figure out what to post. I just don't have the words. The lack of respect shown by the said rescue is appalling.
The camera doesn't lie.

I have just read the forum here and on FBS Facebook page, and would just like to offer a message of support to all at CDH. I have visited the dogs home on many occasions and re homed both my dogs from there. I think the staff and volunteers do an amazing job and give up endless hours of their lives to try to give unwanted, mistreated dogs as much love and caring as they possibly can. It really annoys me that some person, who offered Star a chance of a normal life, would have her put to sleep so soon after collecting her from CDH. I am 100% behind the comments of CDH and the vet, there is no way on earth they would allow ANY dog to suffer, and the only reason they let Star leave, was to allow someone, who had stated they had experience in Frenchies with prolapses, to offer Star the best possible care she could have. The comments or should I say lies posted on FBS Facebook page seem to be some attempt at a smear campaign against CDH, by one person in particular. I can understand the lady is obviously distressed, but nowhere near the amount of distress she has caused to everybody involved in looking after Star in CDH. Star should have been returned to CDH at the least, before she was PTS, why this Lady decided to take Stars future into her own hands begs belief........I just hope you can learn to live with your hasty decision. RIP Star, poor girl.
