Hello, I'm Les. I and my wife have had the unique privilege of owning a most amazing dog. She was a Red Border Collie that we had from just a few days old as her mother rejected her and we brought her up from scratch (pun intended). She understood, probably, most common words in the English language (experts say 1,000 words plus) - she knew exactly what people said, like - "I have to go home now" or "I want kisses" and would react accordingly. She was like a daughter to us and we loved her so much.
She was only 8 years old and should have had another 4-6 years of life. Just before christmas 2014 she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, her eyes had already clouded over and she went blind so we had to inject her twice a day with insulin and use eye drops to ease the discomfort. We could cope with that, a few new commands to help her navigate when out for walkies like "mind the step" and she was ok.
But then in January she had an epileptic fit! Horror! A week or so later more fits. In February, three in one day, then she went into a coma for about 2 hours, I thought the worst but she came back and was her normal loving self. The next day another fit and uncontrollable whimpering, panic attacks trying to run and having nowhere to go, bumping into walls, furniture etc. For us and her this was an absolute nightmare - we had to make the ultimate decision, you can guess what that was
On reflection of her short life I wonder if it was our fault - too many minty treats, too much dog food, not enough excercise - did we kill her with too much kindness? Beware of these possibilities if you are a first time owner, don't make these mistakes. Doggy diets are very important and we should all be aware of that.
All that I have left of her are a few photographs, some of her curly hairs, but lots of wonderful memories!
We are now ready for a new best friend and would love to hear from anybody with a puppy or youngster that needs a home?
