Say hello to Captain! Captain is a stunning staffie lad, who initially seemed a little bit bewildered by his new surroundings. He came out of his kennel timidly and let aunty Suz lead him out to the river bank for a quick toilet break. Captain took the time to take in his new surroundings and enjoyed watching the birds and the boats pass by. Once Captain was a bit more comfortable with us we took him into the vet room for some get to know you time and he didn't disappoint Captain is a fun boy who loves his toys, especially balls. He had great fun crashing around the room chasing after toys, then chose his favorite and took it to bed with him. When the tasty treats came out Captain was able to show us he knows his manners and demonstarted a lovely sit Followed by a paw. He was very gentle taking his treats and softly licked every last bit of pate off Suz's hand. All this playing is thirsty work! Before Captain was finished he just wanted to try out the massage facilities on offer at CDH. That feel good Captain? Captain will be available for rehoming from 26th March, but the staff will e taking applications on him immediately. If you would like more information on him please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. All the dogs are amazing and each of them will keep a space in my mind for a long time. Captain certainly will remain in my heart forever. He is a perfect dog: polite, gentle, respectful; no problem with other dogs, persons, cars, cyclists, cats, ......., lions, rhinos or turtles! When I took him for a walk, he was really scared at seeing an unknow person like me (am I so ugly???). However, when I explained Captain that I am simply another "big dog", he so trusted me that we could spend a very great time together. Captain loves wooden sticks, toys, treats and sniffing anything. We fought in the meadow as old friends and it was a pleasure look him so happy. He just was about to cry when he saw a jack russel running happy in the meadows: "Can I run freely with him, Ste?", he asked me. "No Cap, not yet. But if you are patient, you will, I promise". When will Captain run freely with other dogs?"

We took Captain out for his second walk of the day yesterday. We were informed by the staff that he was timid but didn't find that to be the case at all, he was raring to go! He is a very playful dog and found a stick within minutes which he wouldn't let go of... This was his toy and no-one was going to part him from it.... He wasn't bothered about traffic or other dogs or even the two young lads on bikes who went past us shouting abuse. The more you play with him, the more excitable he gets and he is quite a strong dog but very well-behaved. When we brought him back to CDH he sat waiting patiently for about 10 minutes and enjoyed a bit of a cwtch before returning to his kennel.

Oh wow! Took the lovely Captain out on Friday and he is coming out of his shell lovely since first time I walked him a few days before Again, my 13 year old was with me, and he was very gentle, does love a good fuss, he also likes, as already mentioned....sticks! Well not just sticks, fallen down whole trees do the job just as well! Captain made a bit of a mess of the Ely trail, then decided he had had enough. Myself and sons efforts to clean up though were slightly hampered by Captain thinking it was playtime again when we picked up a stick or branch Yet, through all this, he was very gentle, and would happily give up a stick or branch when told This is Captain deciding that killing trees and sticks is more hard work than he thought! Captain also fancied his chances saying ' Hello ' to the locals on the river, however, the swan had other ideas! Captain is such a lovely boy, is very good on the lead, walks passed other dogs no problem and is really coming out of his shell Take him out, or even better, take him home, you will not be disappointed!

Walked Captain on his second walk on Sunday. He was keen to walk and proudly carried a tennis ball in his mouth.
As we walked, gradually the tennis ball became bits of fluff and pebbles of rubber. Then Captain picked up a stick, but I had a better idea and dug out the tuggie from my backpack. (Thank you, Pets At Home). I'm certain that tennis balls remain the top of the Captain's list of favourite toys, however Captain agreed that this was a suitable exchange for a stick, and proudly carried the brightly coloured rope.
Captain is strong, but he stopped when asked, and could be encouraged to walk on by pedestrians, dogs, cyclists without a fuss. He's also handsome and actually stopped traffic near the Antiques Centre (a car stopped and waved us across the service road so that they could look at The Captain!).
With his staffie snorts, and carrying toys, Captain worked up a thirst and emptied the entire bottle of dog water I carry (He's the thirstiest dog I've walked so far, a whole bottle in one hour of walking). Walkers - carry water for the Captain!
Captain has bags of personality and is a very happy dog.

Captain! You handsome boy! We decided to try and take a dog we hadn't tried yet, and Captain's name jumped out at us. He's a big lad and it took us a little by surprise after taking the teeny Red out earlier, but he's just a big softie! As is only natural for dogs that have been stuck inside all day he did pull initially, though it was never more than we could control and once we were away from the traffic and heading towards Grangemoor Park, he was walking almost completely at heel! Either he was a little unsure of all the cars and wanted to get away from them pronto or he just wanted to get onto the proper part of his walk, but he was responsive enough that we never felt out of control. There were a few large branches/small trees that he tried to bring with us but we managed to persuade him that it might slow us down a little, and Captain moved along with only a little persuasion. In the peace and quiet of Grangemoor he was a complete darling and we had the loveliest walk. We'll have to try and take him for longer next time, maybe up the hill if the weather stays nice! I took over from Dad halfway and Captain seemed to realise I wasn't as strong, as he barely pulled at all. Maybe he'd just settled down by that point but he was just such a brilliant walker. We stopped at the benches for a quick drink and sit - and as other walkers have said, this handsome boy can put away a lot of water so make sure you've topped up! He showed us a perfect sit and paw when a treat was on offer, and there was even time for a couple of lovely cuddles with this gorgeous gentle giant. I'm sure Captain would like to think of himself as a lapdog! He passed by other dogs and people with only a little interest and moved along happily when we asked. Back at the home we were lucky enough to take Captain into the garden for a play (thank you again!) and he was such a happy lad! Seeing the dogs being able to run around off lead is just the best thing. He dove into the toy chest and pulled out a few top choices, but his favourite thing of all was the tyres. He's certainly big enough to handle them but was easily enough distracted by other toys. He was also happy to offer a sit and paw for one of the toys! He was pretty worn out after a short while and trotted back into his kennel with a gorgeous doggy smile. Such a gorgeous boy won't be without a family for too long, surely?

Thank you again for taking us into the garden with Captain. It was lovely seeing him gallop around with his toys, and really nice having a chat.
Hopefully he won't be at the Home for too long!

Loved the induction today. I was a bit late for the BBQ but got to meet Tai and the volunteer gang. Best part by far though was seeing that big softie staffy, CAPTAIN! I wish I'd snapped some pics of our first meeting because he was gentle, energetic and an overall charmer. He likes a good sniff, this one. Not afraid of any noise or traffic either. He even showed off his tummy, ripe for tickles, halfway through. Captain is one of those tough guy dogs, people would probably be a bit apprehensive about him, but he's the exact opposite of what you might expect. He behaves on the lead and is polite around people too. If I didn't already share my home with two staffy ladies, I would have adopted him today. What a fella.

(my first attempt at this was lost due to a browser crash, so apologies that it's not very long) We popped along to the Home on Thursday morning and couldn't resist taking the lovely Captain out again for walkies. He's such a sweet and gentle boy, even if sticks and toys aren't destined to last long around him! As is completely normal for a dog who's been sat inside all day, Captain can pull for the initial few minutes of the walk, but he's easily handled and is so responsive to both his name and commands that there's never a worry of being bowled over. If I stop while walking him, he stops as well and even looks back to see if everything is okay - or at least to ask why we're delaying his walk. Captain doesn't seem overly fond of walking alongside the busy road, though he doesn't act up or become difficult, he just is obviously more relaxed in the peace and quiet. Who can blame him? Branches and sticks aren't safe when Captain is around and you can see him keeping an eye out for one to bring along on the walk, but with a little encouragement he'll move along happily enough and leave the sticks to live another day. We brought a tennis ball with us for Captain to carry and, once we were away from the main road, it was quickly munched into pieces (none of which he ate, we were very careful). But when you see that gorgeous staffy smile, a tennis ball is a small price to pay! We stopped at the benches for some water and Captain showed us his best frog-leg impression, then gave us some lovely cuddles. He's a very affectionate dog who just loves being around people. While he shows some interest in other dogs, he's definitely more interested in the people we pass but, as ever, is very easy to redirect and control. He's a very intelligent dog and was more than happy to show off his sit and paw, even without a treat on offer (video without audio below). He got one afterwards, of course! I could sing Captain's praises all day long if given the chance, and I hope it's not long before this handsome boy finds his new family. First Official walk as a solo Walker. Second walk with Captain. This guy really deserves a new home and family. He's so friendly and gentle, well behaved too It was his 2nd walk of the day on a sunny afternoon so we went to Penarth marina for a chill out by the sea and he loved having a mid-walk break and a drink in the shade We had a nice time together, O hope to spend some time with him again, but I hope even more that he gets good news soon! Good luck chap

Well work commitments have kept us away from CDH for a while but first day off in ages so where else would you go?
I've kept an eye on the walkers tales however, and I've been very keen to get in and see this star everyone seems to be raving about. So happily got in today and away we went, ... Early start so Captains first walk. He was keen to be away and trotted off, but never a problem. It immediately became clear that this guy is a bit of a character, he enjoyed a bit of a roll and snuffle before trekking on, he has a great staffy smile and does the 'check back' thing to ensure you are still there and all is well. Having read all the earlier reports on this guy I get the impression that his confidence is now returning and any insecurities are losing out to his natural good nature and sense of fun. He is a joy to walk, didn't bark once on our two hour walk, inquisitive and interested when other dogs appeared, but no aggression, even when two 'off the lead' terrier types were sniffing around. Cool behaviour from a very cool dog. Sat on a bench so we could give him a drink and he was ears up 'what's in the bag' excited but very polite and respectful. We have enjoyed all the dogs we have walked, but this guy is very special, if you are reading this looking for a new companion consider this, what are you looking for in a dog? Not too big, not too small, well behaved, but a sense of fun. Polite and gentle, happy nature and obviously looking for someone to bond with ......... Well, tick, tick, tick, tick,tick,tick,tick.......and tick. All those other walkers great comments were wrong...he's much better than that! Dont miss a chance to offer this handsome guy the home he deserves!

After seeing all the wonderful comments and fab pics about this chirpy chap, meeting him was an absolute must for me! Captain is indeed a bundle of joy to be with. He's great whilst out walking - he liked to be in front of me initially, but not in a tugging way - so no quicksteps along the road! We didn't get far from the Home when he discovered a sizeable fallen branch - much gnawing, interspersed with lots of Staffie smiles ensued! Boy, does this fella really dig the big sticks! After about 10 minutes Captain was ready to continue his exploration of new sniffs and sounds. Nothing fazes this cool dude: other dogs, cyclists, joggers, swans, ducks - he takes them all in his stride; and he politely said a doggy hello to a man asking me for directions. I mustn't forget to mention that after his fun with the small branch, Captain walked the rest of our time together by my side - which is pretty amazing considering he had been in his kennel for nigh on 23 hours! Not only is Captain a smashing fella, but he's also a real looker to boot! He has lovely black dots over his body, and the patch near his right eye gives him so much character - he's a total knockout! I really hope that Captain will find his special someone soon, who can give him the happy, stable life he truly deserves.
