Friends are thrilled to have been chosen by Marks & Spencers, Leckwith, as their charity partner of the Year!
We met with their Charity Co-ordinator this week, and have been discussing potential Projects.
We have decided that the area adjacent to the Sensory Garden, and down to the riverbank, is desperately in need of improvement and could provide a welcoming outdoor 'seating, greeting and meeting' focal point for visitors and volunteers, and for potential adopters.
The interior of the kennel buildings can be noisy, sometimes uncomfortably warm, occasionally rather cold, and the reception area is small, cramped, and unwelcoming. The perspex window through which visitors and volunteers have to communicate with the staff can be intimidating. There is nowhere for potential adopters to read through information sheets, to complete their adoption application forms, for families to sit and chat amongst themselves, or with staff and volunteers, about the huge commitment they are about to make to a homeless stray dog....
We want to take advantage of our gloriously situated riverbank location to provide a small but welcoming covered seating and recreation area where visitors - particularly families with young children - can sit and chat with staff and volunteers about the dogs, or can simply spend some 'chill out' time getting to know their potential forever friend away from the main kennel block.
Friends of the Dogs is committed to respecting our environment, in particular because of the eco-sensitivity of our very special riverbank location. When we built our sensory garden on the gentle slopes of the riverbank, we first had to carry out a mini Eco-Survey of the area, which is fairly rich and biodiverse. Part of our overall strategy for all improvements at the Home includes a commitment to conserving and developing existing natural habitats, and making sure that the current 'residents' of the area, be they ever so small, slippery, feathery, furry, etc, are protected. It goes without saying that any/all works undertaken will be subject to pre-clearing down site inspections by an ecologist, and we will work to properly drawn up method statements regarding the clearance work.
A meet, seat and greet area will vastly improve the visitor experience at the Dogs Home, and will provide volunteers, staff and visitors alike an opportunity to relax, to picnic by the riverside, to celebrate our special and unique location, and provide a relaxing and picturesque environment to meet their potential forever friends.
