Two more young, large breed newbies arrived at the Home today. Siblings Misty, and her brother Gambit in kennel 10 have been signed over to the Home due to a change in their owners circumstances. As the dogs had only just arrived when we met them, and are not vaccinated, we wouldn't normally get pics for their rehoming threads until they have had a chance to settle, but we couldn't resist popping into their kennels to say 'hi' - and as we had the camera with us...... Cane Corso's are L-A-R-G-E breed dogs. It doesn't mean they are 'more difficult' than small dogs, it doesn't mean they need more exercise than small dogs... it does mean they eat a lot more than your average knee-high pooch though, they can be expensive to insure, and obviously they have more pulling-power than a poodle - so it's imperative that they learn the important life-lessons, how to walk nicely on a lead, a sound recall etc. Apparently Gambit and Misty were expected to exercise themselves in a garden, so we don't know how well they will walk on a lead. As they aren't vaccinated yet they won't be able to go on the walkers list until next Friday (as they won't see our vets until Monday). So we've still got a lot to find out about our two giant adolescents! We've been told they are good with children, with other dogs, and they travel well. But they have definitely missed out on some of their early-learning opportunities, so rehomers will need to be prepared to help them both make up for lost time. One thing we can definitely attest to though - both Gambit and Misty were as gentle as kittens taking treats from our fingers! Misty and her brother Gambit will be available for rehoming from 31st March. Sadly they can't share a kennel, as neither of them are neutered/spayed, and it's likely that the staff will be looking for separate homes for them. If you would like more information, or would like to meet Misty or her brother Gambit, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Took this wonderful girl out today! When she came out at first we thought she looked a bit big and like she was going to walk us, but our views on misty changed very quickly when we realised she was basically a jack Russell in a cane corso's body! She is a BFG! This beautiful girl deserves an amazing furever home just like all the other dogs in CDH!!
Whilst we were walking she was very happy to plod along next to us and enjoyed a few cuddles on the way! She is the biggest softy! 🙂🐶

We had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful girl today for a long walk. Misty really is a stunner! She has the most beautiful flecked coat, and lopes along so gracefully on the lead. She is so well-behaved and is content to walk at whatever pace you set for her. She is a real lover of treats and often put her nose into my hand to double check it was empty! It didn't take us long to find out she'll perform a perfect 'sit' and 'paw' for one, and is oh so gentle taking them from your hand. Such a good girl! We brought a rope for her to play with but she didn't take to it, preferring to prance around with me after we raced down the path. She was interested but not concerned by other dogs or people, until we passed her brother Gambit and the two had a brief play together <3 I really didn't want to leave Misty at the end of our walk together, and made sure she got lots of cuddles - she presses herself against your legs for some rubs! She really is a beautiful and unique dog that you could really fall in love with.

We were lucky enough to take Misty out this morning and she is just the most gorgeous and well-behaved sweetheart there is! Even though there are two of us we thought that taking Misty and Gambit out together might be a bit too much to start with, as they're quite big dogs, but our walk with Misty went so well that hopefully we'll be able to try the pair soon enough. She trotted out of the kennels with a waggy tail but refused to head off before she'd given a big kiss to the member of staff who'd brought her out. After that we headed off down the lane and Misty walked like a dream. Despite being a big dog Misty walks amazingly well on the lead and rarely pulls, only a little when she spots another dog or person she wants to say hello to, and even then she's easy enough to control and move on. Misty loves to have a cwtch and a fuss and stopped frequently for a cuddle before we were allowed to move on. She'd look to check back on us every now and then, even going so far as to try and look at us while still walking, so we'd end up going in little circles around each other. It was pretty adorable! She was happy to keep pace with us and if she started going a little too fast for us, just saying her name was enough for her to slow down. Misty takes treats so gently, though she was very interested in them and the bag they came from, and was only too happy to sit and give paw in exchange. She did show interest in the dogs we passed but there was zero aggression, just a big waggy tail and the desire to play. She was easy to distract and move away, though when we spotted her brother Gambit we of course let her go over and say hello. They had a very quick little play with each other before we had to go our separate ways, but I know they'd just have a whale of a time in the garden bounding around together. Hopefully we'll manage to take out Gambit next time and maybe build up to taking them both together one day, if they haven't been rehomed by then. Fingers crossed they won't be waiting too much longer!

While our intention was to take Misty's brother, Gambit, out yesterday morning, he'd already been out with the staff and they asked if we'd mind taking Misty instead as she was already out of the kennels and ready to go. Of course we said yes, because who could say no to that gorgeous face?! Misty is such a lovely walker and so relaxing to be out with. Her tail is constantly wagging and she is very responsive on lead, slowing down when you say her name or slow down yourself. The only time Misty ever really pulls is on her way back to the Home as you reach the lane, because she knows she'll see her brother again in the kennels! She behaves wonderfully around other dogs, showing interest but zero aggression and never pulling too much to go and see them. We decided to head up to the trail on Cogan Pill road for a change of scenery and Misty walked excellently on the way up, where the pavement disappears at a few points and you have to walk on the road. She had a good old sniff in the grass and sounded almost like a staffie with all her snorting! Misty is a big fan of treats and will try to 'help' you get them out of your bag or pocket, but she'll also wait patiently enough when you ask and is only too happy to sit and give paw. After a few cuddles Misty was ready to head off and picked up her water bowl, emptying it out for us. Such a helpful girl This gorgeous girl is 100% softie and would make the most wonderful and loving addition to her future forever family. Hopefully she won't be waiting too much longer to find them!

Misty has now been with us for over 6 months and really is part of the family. She and her brothers and sister are really looking forward to their first Christmas together and are hoping Santa brings them some lovely gifts... Or at least that they get to share the turkey!

Wonderful to see the photos of Misty (I hadn’t seen the previous ones). She does look very much part of her lovely canine family and it’s great how well they all get on. She has really landed on her paws!

Just over a year has passed since Misty joined our family. She is full of energy and excitement and is a (very!) big bundle of fun. I think she sometimes thinks she's the size of her (also rescued) Jack Russell brother when she jumps up on your lap!! Her confidence has grown immeasurably and she is very much loved by everyone who knows her. It's difficult to remember the time before she arrived - the house would now seem very empty without her!! Misty and her big, little brother, Hector. Misty enjoying the garden. Beautiful!
