Please whisper a gentle welcome to Belle
This poor girl arrived at the Home last week under very distressing circumstances. The wardens were called to a house by someone who claimed to have 'found' her in their garden. Belle was underweight, has an extremely sore skin condition (probably demodex mange) which has been left untreated; her ears are swollen and infected, and most upsetting of all, Belle was very clearly still nursing a large litter of puppies at the time. Her teats were full of milk, and when the wardens put her in the van she was crying plaintively for her pups
Belle has been seen by the vets. She is having treatment for her skin, for her ear, and has been given medication to dry up her milk. We didn't take pictures of her when she first arrived, and even a week later (when we took these pictures) although she has put on a little weight and her skin is slowing getting better she is still anxiously looking everywhere for her babies whenever she is out of her kennel. When she heard little Vinnie yapping for attention in the Rehoming Hub on Monday she was overcome with agitation, and we had to let her go into the Hub so she could see it wasn't her pups calling for her. She was utterly inconsolable
Although Belle has been badly let down by her owner, we have slowly begun to gain her trust...
She is hand-shy and nervous, but once she knows she is around people who mean no harm she loves nothing more than to be near them
It just breaks our hearts that she doesn't seem to expect gentleness and kindness from humans
Belle is as gentle around dogs as she is around people, and was comfortable to be in Bas's company
She is very slowly starting to come around, and the volunteers have been trying to encourage her to put her past behind her, and look forward to her new life, one where she will know nothing but love and affection. But we have yet to see her without that worried look on her face...
We have been informed by someone who wishes to remain anonymous that her pups were born on 7th August, which means they were taken from her (or rather she was taken from them) when they were just four weeks old. That is far too young, and without a doubt her puppies will have been infected with her skin complaint, will not be microchipped, wormed, flea treated or vaccinated, so if ANYONE is offered a puppy for sale in Newport and you cannot see them with their mother please just walk away. No-one should be able to profit from Belle's misery, whoever did this to her deserves to rot in hell. And yes, we DO know who you are
If you'd like to get to know Belle, would like to meet her, and can offer her a new life and help her put her past behind her, please contact the staff on 01633 290902, or pop up during opening hours. Between 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm, on weekdays, 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 3.30pm on Saturday. Please note: the home is CLOSED on Sundays.
Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include 1st vaccination, flea & worm treatment, neutering and microchip.
