Please welcome the verrrrry handsome Basil There seems to be no shortage of abandoned shar-peis recently Basil was found straying, which doesn't mean he was born in the gutter and dragged himself him among a pack of street dogs - because that doesn't happen in the UK. It just means whoever bred him didn't rehome him responsibly, and whoever bought him thinks it's OK to dump a dog. We only had Basil out for a short while in the garden today, and he was much more interested in the smells in the garden than anything we had to offer, so we just let him do his own thing, which was pretty much nose-to-the-floor sniffing. With a bit of persuasion he did stop to let us get his profile pics though - and they don't disappoint - Basil is a good looking guy and no mistake! Basil has already become a firm favourite with our Pilgrims and if you'd like to meet him please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Basil was our choice yesterday morning to take for a walk directly after the funeral in Mike's memory. He was the right choice as he made us laugh constantly on our walk. There is no beating around the bush, Basil is a slobbery dog! He drools and drools and every so often he shakes his head and the slobber goes all over him and over you too if you are not careful where you stand! We played dodge the slobber for nearly an hour, had us in fits of laughter! Basil also loves to sniff everything and sometimes he would sniff a bush or a tree for a good five minutes and then decide it was not worth the effort of lifting his leg on it. He doesn't answer to Basil but responds to "Good Boy" - every time we told him he was a good boy he wagged his tail like mad. He also loves his treats, although watch your fingers, walkers. I am sure he won't be long looking for his forever home. Good luck Basil! Sorry I chopped your nose off in this pic but you wouldn't keep still long enough for me to take your photo!

Sadly, and through absolutely no fault of his own, Basil has been returned to Cardiff Dogs Home.
His character is completely unblemished, and his spirit completely undampened though! He's the same lovely fella that we know and love.
If you'd like to meet him pop down to Cardiff Dogs Home soon!

Basil and I took a very wet walk out today! He wasn't bothered by the pouring rain at all! He was just happy to be out in the fresh air, sniffing everything and having a lovely shake every now and again! He walks well on the lead, head up, ears up, tail up, very interested in all that going on! He's NOT very happy passing other dogs and will stop dead and refuse to move until the other dog has gone past. He will bark at them but he's light enough to control. Maybe he just needs some extra training here. His fur is a bit patchy so he's not looking his best but he's such a happy chappy, just beware of the slobber when he shakes his head! ๐๐ถ๐พ

I took Basil out most days this last week. I try to take him out when itโs a bit quieter as he does get very stressed by other dogs and he barks and makes a lot of odd noises, as well as foaming at the mouth. Otherwise he has the sweetest nature. He is so gentle when taking treats and he is much admired when out and about because of his good looks. He loves being with people and being outside and doesnโt usually want to go back into his kennel after his walk. I hope someone will see his many merits as Iโm sure he will blossom given the right home.

Oh Basil I lost a bit of my heart to you today!! You are sooo good looking and such a sweet boy. We walked in the drizzle along the river. Basil wanted to pee on everything at the start of his walk and between pees and sniffs he was an excellent walker. His lovely whippy tail was wagging and he showered me with slobber! I really didn't mind though because he's so lush. His fur velvety soft and I love his squidgy mouth. When I gave him a treat he was ever so gentle but i wasn't sure where his mouth started and finished due to his wrinkles! The only thing perfect Basil needs to work on is passing of other dogs. Not sure whether he was excited or frightened but he was quite reactive. But being a smaller Sharpei he was easy to control and as soon as the other dogs passed he was back to his wonderful self. Hopefully someone will take you home soon Basil. You're lovely.

A shout out for Basil. I take him out most weekdays and he is lovely to walk, gentle on the lead and affectionate with all people. Heโs not really keen on other dogs and makes a bit of a racket if he sees one so I tend to walk him in quieter spots where hopefully we wonโt encounter other walkers. Of course we usually see one or two dogs when approaching the lane back to the dogs home. The funny thing is sometimes heโll see a dog in the yard when waiting to go back in and heโll take no notice of it. Whatโs that all about Basil? Otherwise heโs a sweet boy and gets so many admiring glances and people coming up to ask about him as heโs super handsome. A nice home is what he needs most and an understanding owner. Heโs a bit of a slobbery eater but otherwise easy to love. Come see for yourselves!

Walked Basil last week and he was very well behaved on the lead. He is very chatty and does pull when he sees other dogs, but it not at all bothered by other people, cyclists, or cars. He's a bit of a slobbery Chappy, so stand back when he shakes his head because it goes everywhere, but that's all part of this gorgeous dogs charm. Can't believe how long he has waited to find his forever home, walkers are usually queuing up to walk him!

We took Basil out today (but only briefly). He walked lovely on the lead and is just so likeable! As everyone else said, he reaaally enjoys sniffing everything. Every Shar Pei we've walked so far has been like that - I guess it's a breed quirk . Unfortunately Basil was very unwilling to walk past a certain point on the lane, but now that I have read a couple of the comments in the threat... I think he might have been stressed out because of all the dogs that were going past. He only barked ones, but after a while all of the passing dogs must have made him stop and not want to go any further down the lane. He was happy to come back towards the home though and, luckily, we met one of the very frequent volunteers (if you are here, so sorry, never learned your name!) who was allowed to take Basil to the sensory garden. I am sure they had a lot of fun there! Look at this beautiful gentleman and his bow tie!

Iโve been walking my โboyโ Basil regularly for some months and up until this last week heโs trotted happily along which ever route Iโve chosen and for however long Iโve had him out. This past week for some reason heโs suddenly not wanted to even get up the lane and once out will dig in his heels from time to time and not move willingly. Quite what has caused this behaviour I donโt know but do persevere with him walkers as he is a fabulous boy and perhaps itโs because heโs been too long at CDH. Conversely he didnโt want to go back into his kennel and had to be carried there! He absolutely loves people and would thrive in a stable home. Iโm keeping my fingers crossed for him. Go Basil!

Hi everyone I'm Basil but Alex calls me Bazza for short ๐๐๐ I went out today with Alex and I was on my best behaviour. I trotted up the lane, and there were even some dogs there but don't worry I calmly trotted passed and they didn't phase me at all. I've gotten so much better, I love people and children so much but sometimes i don't get on with other dogs, I'm a dog for the people. The people's dog hehehehe. Alex says I'm full of character and sass and she wouldn't have me any other way. I'm kind of getting over looked and no one knows why, I would love a family of my own ๐๐๐๐ Ps sometimes i do get myself worked up for no reason when I see another dog (I'm very picky) but please don't let that put you off me.. after all Alex says that not everyone gets on with everyone and that's the same for us pups ๐๐๐๐๐ lots of love love BAZZA xxxxxxxxxxx

Basil has spent his Fourth day with me on a respite visit and to say he is the perfect guest is an understatement. He is totally chilled and so well behaved that you almost forget heโs in the house! His manners are impeccable. He can be left if I have to go out for any period and doesnโt bark or make any kind of mess but waits patiently and greets me warmly on my return. He enjoys his walks and still has issues if he espys any other dogs so we generally try to avoid them. I wonder if itโs all bravado and whether in fact he would run away if confronted by one. Itโs something still to be worked on. However for any potential adopters I would not hesitate to recommend Basil as being a perfect companion. Sweet natured, handsome, loving, loyal etc, etc (need I go on?) he would definitely fit into most households as he just loves people and loves company.
if anybody is interested in meeting this handsome chap he is at home with me whilst this heatwave is on but I can easily bring him into CDH any time to suit for an introduction.

Baz!!!! What a boy!!! Walked this slobbery, stubborn boy a few times now so know what to expect!!! He walks so well on the lead, very responsive to you and he takes his treats so gently! A very handsome companion. BUT he is so stubborn when you pass other dogs! Stops dead and waits til they go past when he has a bit of a shout, then as soon as they've passed he trots on as if nothing happened!!!! He does make me laugh, it's not a huge problem, more socialising and I'm sure he could learn to be more tolerant! So much character, so much slobber!!! Love you, Baz!!! ๐พ๐ถ๐พ๐๐๐พ

Hi everyone I'm Basil AKA Bazza and I am still at the Hotel ๐ I walk great on the lead, I'm a little reactive when it comes to other dogs but there's no aggression, I just let myself get worked up for no reason at all. I went on a walk last week with my bestie Suki a young lady pup Shar Pei and I loved It, she even had a little sniff and I didn't mind at all hehehe. I have bags of personality and I'm a gentle soul who wouldn't hurt anyone. I'm looking for my perfect forever home, I know there's someone out there that has a Basil shaped sofa just for me. I have been on respite to give me a break from the Hotel and apparently I'm great, I'm house trained and a perfect house guest. Good things come to those who wait and fingers crossed I won't have to wait much longer. I got rehomed from the Hotel and then I was up on a stupid website called Gumtree, cumon people we all know you shouldn't buy us pups from there. The Hotel stepped in and I've been here ever since, who knows where I would have ended up if the home hadn't of stepped in ๐๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐ค๐๐๐๐ lots of love and BAZZA kisses because they're the best ๐๐๐๐๐๐
