EDITED: Rick and Motty were rehomed recently. Sadly for Motty he was returned, without his best pal in the whole wide world Motty is homeless again, and doesn't even have his bestie to comfort him. Motty will need to be rehomed with a resident dog. Please give a warm welcome to tiny Chi Rick and his best friend in the whole wide world, Motty Lurcher This beautiful but unlikely pair have been signed over to the Home, and have been inseparable since they arrived. They are very different in character and personality! Rick Chi is a very confident and inquisitive little fella, bold and friendly. And Motty is much more shy and wary of new things. He tries to hide behind Rick when confronted with something that worries him, but due to the size disparity this isn't really a great coping technique! So we did our best to win Motty's confidence in the newly painted outdoor pen Motty was quickly drawn to the Burns carry out bag of kibble, and this gave us a clue that food might be the way to win him over So out came the pate... And although clearly it's going to be tiny baby steps for Motty, he did seem to relax a little. We noticed Motty has a very sore patch around his neck, maybe from have a collar too tight, but it is looking less inflammed than it was. But we did take our eyes of the ball for a few seconds, and Rick spotted the pate on the floor and tucked in while we were trying to make Motty feel at ease Yup, Rick didn't take his eyes of the prize for a nanosecond! Burns? That'll do nicely No Rick, you can't take the whole box back to your kennel! Rick does like a comfy lap to sit on, he looks a bit like a kitten from the back. He has settled into the routine of kennel life without a problem Motty however is very wistful and still a little unsettled. All he can think about is his forever home, wherever that may be For more information or if you'd like to meet Rick and/or Motty please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Took this lovely pair out yesterday. They are indeed inseparable and it’s really rather touching that Motty checks the whole time to make sure little Rick is okay. They are a delightful little duo and it would be wonderful given their close bond if they could be rehomed together. Both very easy dogs with very sweet natures.

We don't do 'buy one get one free' - but it would have been unthinkable to split up our unlikely pair, and we were thrilled to hear that Rick and Motty have found a home with room for two How fab!

We were absolutely gutted to learn that Motty has been returned to the Home without his best friend in the whole wide world. Motty is finding it very tough in kennels without his bestie. He is refusing to go for walks on his own, and we will be trying to pair him up with a new four legged friend to help him with his confidence. Motty will need to be rehomed with a resident dog.

Oh poor poor Motty, that's just so sad, for both him and for Rick who I expect is missing his buddy equally 😣 how can that have happened?? Don't worry Motty, the staff and pilgrims won't let you be lonely for long. I'm sure you'll find a new friend really soon and a new family that really love you xxx

This is really sad (for both dogs). We will try to pop down to the Home soon to see if our terrier gets on with Motty when they meet. My wife might take convincing that we need another pooch, but I think another (calmer) dog might help ours to relax more. Approximately how old is Motty?

Motty is missing his little pal so much that he was grieving in his kennel, so the staff decided he needed to bunk up with doggy company. Motty is now sharing kennel 11 with his new bestie, Tippy!

I sincerely hope this wasn't a case of the adopters wanting little Rick and taking Motty as 'extra baggage' to get the dog they wanted.
I SINCERELY hope that wasn't the case.......but, if it was, I hope they'll be as tender and compassionate with Rick as CDH staff and volunteers are being with Motty. Rick may be in a forever home but, if the dogs were this bonded, I wouldn't be surprised if he's grieving too.
What could have been so wrong with Motty that it was considered appropriate to bring him back so quickly, yet keep the pal he shared that bond with?
I appreciate I don't know the circumstances - and possibly they were extenuating - but it seems odd to say the least.......??
Good luck Motty - may you get the wonderful home you so deserve
And good luck Rick......I HOPE you have the wonderful home you deserve

I walked this little sweet heart this morning and I just love him to bits. He's definitely a very nervous dog and there were a couple times when he refused to walk but I found that I just had to kneel down and give him some words of encouragement and gentle strokes behind the ears and he gained enough confidence to continue his walk. The first time I did this he actually gave me a little boop on the chin with his nose, it was so cute. He actually gets very playful with Tippy. It's sweet to see him coming out of his shell, it would be great to see Motty off lead and playing with Tippy one day. Honestly such a lovely boy

I think that we should ‘pause’ or 🐾😂 before assuming things or making judgements about what happened when Rick found his forever home and Motty didn’t...sometimes it doesn’t all go according to plan even when people wantand plan for the best.. We should be happy that Rick is settled not judging or accusing people of having motives...unless I misunderstood the mission of the charity which I wanted to had part of which was ‘friends’ of Cardiff 🐶 For me the good thing is that Motty is still safe and well and will definitely be ready for his forever home soon.

This is a reply from Pete (and Carole) to garrick's post of 23 July. We are the new owners of Rick (the chihuahua).
We want to explain what happened and to give reassurances. We collected Rick and his friend Motty (the lurcher) from CDH several weeks ago after passing the necessary vetting procedures. We were told that both dogs may not have had a happy life so far and that it was possible that they were not house-trained. The first point convinced us that we could help both dogs (as we are both retired and have a lot of TLC to give). The second point did not deter us (and when we got the dogs home we indeed found that they were not fully house-trained but, again, this was not a problem for us). We also did not want to see these two mates separated.
Anyway, once they were here in North Cardiff we took the dogs for three walks every day and both dogs were getting comfortable and enjoying the run of the house including climbing on the sofa, bounding upstairs (not Rick!) and also the back garden. However, after about ten days a problem developed as we discovered that Motty was really an older puppy whereas Rick is at least three-years-old and possibly somewhat older. The problem was that whenever Rick scuttled off somewhere, Motty would follow Rick. If Rick hid a toy, Motty would go and take it. Wherever Rick went, Motty would be on his tail. This very much irritated Rick who would bark (no problem for us) but, on at least three occasions that we saw, Motty reacted to the barking by gripping little Rick in his jaws. We knew that we could not risk being out of the house or in bed, with the two dogs alone and Rick possibly in danger, We don't think Motty was just being playful - he was reacting to the barking - but we weren't sure.
Accordingly, we contacted CDH and initially offered to return BOTH dogs but CDH convinced us that this would not be necessary and that Motty should come back and a new (larger) doggy mate would be found for him. All was well when we took Rick home - quite frankly, he is loving it here and we can state clearly that he has not missed Motty one little bit.
However, when Carole and I first saw the posts on this website about the pair being separated and Motty being sad and forlorn without Rick, Carole rang CDH and said that we would be prepared to return adorable Rick to the Home but Carole was advised that things had moved on and a new mate for Motty had been found at CDH. This was good news.
garrick said in his post that he/she didn't know the circumstances, so I hope his/her mind can be put at rest after reading the above. As an animal lover, like me and Carole, his/her concern was perfectly understandable.
Carole and I thought carefully about whether we should post this "reply" as we don't want anyone to get the wrong idea about Motty. He is a lovely and lively older puppy who deserves a good home with a decent-sized garden. He can be quite nervous with strangers but quickly struck a bond with Carole. Lots of energy and a handsome boy as well. He was always fine when coming across other dogs. We miss him.

I walked some dogs this morning and didn't notice motty's name on the walkers' list, just Tippy's. Is he okay? Just checking in because he's such a sweet boy.
