This fella broke our hearts today
Sven had just arrived when we met him. He was brought in by a member of the public who claimed he had found Sven, but left the Home in a hurry when they asked for his car registration and contact details. The staff thought it was very odd that someone would go to the bother of getting an unknown dog into his car, driving all the way from Ely to the Home, then leave so abruptly. Most finders show genuine concern for the dog's welfare if they have gone to all this trouble, and usually ask the staff to let them know if the owners come forward, what will happen to the dog if the owner can't be found etc. We have a very strong inkling that no-one will come forward for Sven, and given the sorry state he was in when he arrived, maybe that's not a bad thing.
Sven's lovely white coat was absolutely filthy, he has multiple wounds around his face, even on his tongue, and his neck had heavy track marks from ear discharge on both sides. We put Sven straight into the bath, and although it was obviously a completely new experience for him, Sven seemed to know he was in safe and loving hands and he stood silently as we washed years of filth from his coat.
Good fella Sven.
When bathing a dog, it's always kindest to leave their face until last, so we started at his shoulders, worked down his legs and back, leaving pools of dark brown water in the shower tray
The marks on Sven's neck were deeply ingrained, the result of weeping discharge from untreated ear infections
Sven was stoic and brave, and stood steadily for us as we massaged away the dirt and filth as best we could from around his wounded face
Sven felt soooooooo much better after his emergency bath!
He still has recent wounds on his face which will no doubt heal up quickly enough, and he will be seeing the vet first thing in the morning to give him a thorough check over for signs of infection, and to check his ears. Sven - your new life starts now fella
We think Sven looks rather happy to hear that!
