Please welcome the funny, the fabulous, the scrummy, whiskery-faced Poppy! Poppy is not much more than a puppy at 9 months old, and has been surrendered to CDH because her family didn't realise how much hard work a hound can be! We have a wealth of information on Poppy, which the staff will be happy to share with any potential rehomers, but the crux of it is..... She is young, she needs training, she has high energy levels and needs a lot of exercise, she will chew if she is bored or find other ways to occupy herself, she needs clear boundaries, she is clean as long as she is let out regularly, she is stubborn..... basically Poppy is a young hound dog - they don't 'bring themselves up'! All puppies need training, time and patience, and Poppy is no exception. It's so easy to fall in love with those long floppy velvety ears, that beguiling face, this energetic and lively, lolloping funny girl, but if anyone is interested in rehoming Poppy please be prepared to put in the time & training she needs, and more importantly do some breed research first. Don't be swayed just because she is absolutely, totally adorable..... Or because she looks sooooooooo cute when she stops clowning around for a nanosecond to offer you her paw..... or because she is a very clever girlie and can catch a randomly thrown treat from 10 meters.... Poppy is available for rehoming immediately. If you'd like more info on her, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Mon/Thurs till 6pm

Hi all! Well we were a bit daunted when we decided to take this '100mph bundle of energy' out for a walk...but I am SO glad we did! We don't have any experience of a hound, and limited research on our part meant we were braced for nose to the floor and go. And in fairness, for about the first 10mins of our walk that is exactly how Poppy was. Yes, she did pull - alot - and she is a strong girl. But I feel that is understandable given the circumstances the dogs find themselves in, and once we were on the trail she settled instantly. Poppy was such a joy for us to walk - she seemed to match our 'energy'...the girls are at an age where everything is amazing: ducks/flowers/stones/twigs/leaves/snails - and so in no time the three of them seemed to have made a pact: Poppy sniffed the interesting things out, and the girls investigated them! Watching the three of them tie themselves in knots around a tree whilst following a butterfly had Paul and I in stitches! We did attempt to call her by her name to get her attention, but she wasn't quite ready to give up the sniffs - however a short sharp whistle seemed to do the trick! This also worked to get her to come along and leave said sniff, or to gain her attention when we needed to cross the road. At one point I had to sternly tell my 3yr old to wait; Poppy immediately sat down and looked at me intently. She literally seemed to be 'waiting'! She did a wonderful 'sit' whilst we had a water break, and by the time we turned around to walk back to the home, she was so comfortable that her lead was slack. She regularly checked where myself and Paul were on our walk. We met a few other dogs along the way, and although she pulled at the lead to go and meet them, it was out of interest. I mentioned to another dog walker that she was from CDH, but he was happy for her to meet his dog, and she very politely touched noses with no grumbles or barking. She wasn't fazed by the traffic, and the workmen on the bridge made a fuss, which she enjoyed. We came across 'Blossom' and Poppy did a lovely thing - she was keen to say hello, but seemed to sense Blossom being timid; so Poppy lay down on the floor, and inched over to her - so sweet We are really smitten with Poppy Part of me really hopes she finds her forever home soon - she is just so lovely. (Shhhh...but part of me secretly hopes she doesn't, so we can keep walking her!!!) Good luck Popster! Poppy slightly more relaxed on the trail. With Paul at the mid-point drink and snack break! She pinched the water bowl out of my rucksack and carried it to where the girls were sat on the bench. The she put it down and waited patiently for us to fill it! Using the 'love-lead' - that's my 2yr old with me, and Poppy was great with her on the lead - she didn't pull. Hia Popster!! :-) The 'usual' image for a foxhound I guess! She'd actually found a caterpillar, which my 3yr old has brought home in her pocket

I had a wakey wakey walk with the lovely Poppy this morning, I was braced for a high energy sprint rather than a walk and was pleasantly surprised at how fantastic she was walking on the lead, she hardly pulled at all on the lead and did what all hound dogs do, nose to the ground and sniffed until she could sniff no more and then some. She was very gentle and polite taking treats, sat for me without even being asked and offered me her paw which I wasn't really expecting, and enjoyed posing for a lovely photo. She did seem to get excited when she could see other dogs at a distance on the walk but did'nt really get chance to meet any so she seemed a bit frustrated at that. She's a beautiful girl, such a pretty face and a personality to match. Look at her poseing, bless her!

Big bump for Poppy! Can't believe this girlie is still here! It is such a shame to see her wasting her puppy days in kennels.

Jen and Rubytuesday, I absolutely agree!
We're hopeful that we can take her out this weekend, perhaps for the day, and get some great pics! We're so smitten with her, and missed her terribly on our hols last week - she would have loved all the sniffs! I can't wait for Saturday now to see her... :-)

I believe I have one of Poppy's brothers. I bought the last of a litter of 7, and although he is a typical hound, follows his nose when off lead, he has such a great temperament with adults, kids, dogs and just loves playing with other dogs more than anything else. He does need a bit of exercise but when his face lights up running around a big field or following his nose through woodland, it really makes it worth while. I will not say it's been perfect, the odd ripped bit of wallpaper or chewed puppy pad (easily manageable with puzzles) but in all a great dog ever improving (currently curled up on my lap after a very wet walk). If I had the space i would reunite them in a heartbeat but I hope Poppy finds her forever home soon.
for those who want to see a picture of my pooch for comparison.
Thanks,

Hi. Im very interested in rehoming poppy (or benji). Is she still available. I live in the devon country side. have two other dogs (a rescue lab aged 16 and also a 4 yr old lab), 2 cats and horse. my younger lab comes riding with me. I work from home so my animals arnt left for long periods of time. I also have a 6 yr old son who is desperate for a beagle, as is my husband. we had a beagle / terrier cross some years ago now, but sadly lost him to lymphoma.
I hope we can be considered for a forever home for poppy or benji.

We were really excited to take Poppy out for a 'doggy-day-trip' today
We decided to take her to Bute Park, as there is a lovely circular walk from Western Avenue Tesco's, across Blackweir to Sophia Gardens bridge, then onto the Secret Garden Cafe, and along the riverside trail back to Blackweir, and we were out for about 3.5hours.
Poppy travelled well in the car; she had a few squeaks on her toys, but settled pretty quickly, and waited for us to get ourselves sorted before starting our walk.
We had an absolute ball! Poppy loved everything! She was the usual hound dog for about the first half hour, with her nose to the floor, and barely a look up. But bear in mind that we were taking her on a day trip, she was super excited! A few other dogs came to say hello, and she was fantastic - she just wanted to play. She has lots of admiring glances, and wasn't bothered at all by other people, cyclist, runners, children etc.
Crossing by Blackweir, she made a few sounds towards the birds and ducks on the river - made me think of the film 'Up' with the dog and the 'squirrel' moment! But she was easily distracted with a whistle. After we had crossed the bridge, I took her onto the fields for a bit of one-on-one time, and boy did we run! She was hop-skippety-jump, and so desperate to go - her ears were back and her nose must have been overloaded! We had lots of fun running in and out of the trees, jumping over the stumps, hiding in bushes and going around in circles This girl has LOTS of energy and stamina!
When we stopped for lunch she was good for a while, and then she got bored. So she decided to play some tricks! Here we thought we try some distraction and rewarded 'sit', 'wait' and 'paw' with treats, which she did beautifully. As soon as we were back to play she settled down, and had an absolute ball with my daughter, catching the blossom from the tree - just lovely. She wasn't that interested in balls, or toys, but she did enjoy sticks! We found some by a tree, and she chewed it, rolled it, munched it, carried it, ran with it, lay down with it - the bloomin' thing was about as big as she was!
On the way home she walked with Paul and didn't pull at all. She was great getting back into the car, and settled very quickly - she was asleep within 5mins!
Poppy walks well on the lead, listens and plays after she has settled down into a walk. She has so much to give and so much to offer. She is very keen be part of the group she is with, and I know she will blossom onto a fantastic dog with some training, patience and love. She can be very cwtchy and at one point we were sat beneath a tree watching these two magpies, and she leaned into me for a cuddle - it lasted all of a minute before she was off! But it was enough
In the car
At Blackweir, crossing the bridge with no problems
Ready to go off & explore!
Contemplating....
How happy can one dog be??!!

Poppy was the last of my wakey wakey walks this morning and she was fab. So happy to be out, she did pull a bit but it was just the excitement of finding the next smell! True to form she was tail up, nose down almost the entire time. She did stop and sit down very politely, without being asked, when I paused to re-tie my shoe laces and really enjoyed walking underneath the trees where the breeze was bringing her lots of lovely smells. She was quite interested in saying hello to some of the dogs that we passed but was easily persuaded to continue our walk despite not getting to play. Really lovely character and an excellent way to round off my first morning of walking duties

Hi all! I was really excited to take Poppy out again yesterday, and with the kind permission of CDH, we took her for a morning at Cosmeston Lakes - she really enjoyed! She was a good as gold in the car, settled really quickly, and once we arrived she waited patiently for me to arrange Carys, my Mum and her little dog Dylan. Poppy was brilliant around Dylan - she so desperately wanted to go and run, jump and play with him, so I indulged for about 10mins of running, jumping and playing with them! It was the best workout I've had in ages Poppy was fab around all other dogs and people that we met, including children. When we stopped for people to pass us, she would sit patiently by my side. We came across two people in wheelchairs, whose dogs were strapped to the front - a beagle and a staffie. It was so lovely as they stopped to ask about Poppy, whilst Poppy played with their dogs. Dylan, who was by far the smallest, was a bit left out! It really wasn't long before Poppy settled into the walk, and she didn't pull at all. At the end of our walk, we went to a picnic bench, and we practised some commands - she did 'sit', 'paw', 'lie down' and 'wait', all rewarded with a treat. She got very excited about all of this, and I really do believe that she is desperate for some training, and with this she would become an even more amazing dog! Who's in our boot??!! Waiting patiently Playing hide and seek with Dylan Making friends! Beautiful girl by the lake This girl is awesome - there's got to be a forever home out there for her!
