Please welcome the very handsome Jay Jay has been surrendered to the Home and although the staff have been given some information on his background, temperament etc, the staff will be giving Jay a thorough assessment over the next few days, as some of the information given has been a bit confusing. Jay is 2 years old, and we're told he has lived quite happily with 3 resident dogs, but can be a little unhappy around other dogs. We were also told that he hasn't been exercised much, but that because he bites his lead he has been 'muzzle trained'. Well, we brought Jay our for a walk today, and although he did pay a lot of unwanted attention to his lead, he was very unhappy about wearing a muzzle. So, we tried a 'back to basics', fitted him with a harness and chain lead, and although he did have the odd champ at his lead, he listened when we asked him to 'leave it' and he enjoyed a lovely high stepping trot down the lane as good as gold! We passed a few dogs and Jay didn't react at all. So all we can really say about Jay is that he is a bit of an unknown quantity really. Without a doubt Jay is going to be a favourite with the Purple Pilgrims, and we're looking forward to seeing how his lead walking improves over the coming days. Jay is certainly a head turner! And there was no shortage of big fat staffies smiles today! As Jay has been signed over to CDH, he is available for rehoming immediately. If you'd like more info, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Mon/Thurs till 6pm

I hadn't had a chance to read the write up on Jay before arriving at CDH this morning but as a lover of staffs I was very happy when Nick brought Jay out for my 2nd walk this morning. With harness on and lead attached Jay was ready to go. Initially Jay did want to chomp on his lead but a firm 'leave it' from Nick who walked a little way up the lane with me resulted in Jay releasing the lead and walking on. I took the lead & we made our way up Penarth Rd hill and was I in for a very pleasant surprise! Jay is a delight to walk, he set a easy paced up the hill and I often had a loose lead as he walked by my side. A train whistle startled him but he walked on calmly. He made a half hearted attempt to grab the lead after passing a fellow resident on the return leg but a firm 'leave it' did the job. Jay took no notice of the dogs he passed (3 in total). I'd take him out again in a flash, he's a lovely dog with bags of potential, great personality and a big smile. (photo on fb)

Ricki and I decided to walk Jay with Max this afternoon and took them for a nice long walk together. Although at first both were a bit excited about being out of their kennel, they soon settled down and walked along nicely. Max was keen to get close to Jay, but we have them their space and let them walk close enough to be able to know they were comfortable together, with Jay showing no real interest in Max and just keen to press on with his walk. At times Jay was walking right by Ricki's legs with a totally slack lead. Towards the end of the walk (after over an hour of getting used to each other) we let them get close, and they couldn't get close enough! Jay was very comfortable walking with Max and very comfortable to have max bumping into him. I think they both enjoyed their walk, and its certainly enjoyable to be able to successfully introduce dogs to each other. Jay is really laid back while walking, but he can be excitable at first. He's a lovely boy and I hope he's not hanging around for long!
