Please give a friendly welcoming wave to Ruby Ruby has only recently arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home. She was brought in by the wardens as a stray, and although we don't know much about her past, we do know she is deaf. Dogs rely heavily on their senses to navigate the world and their surroundings, to make sense of what's going on around them, and it has taken Ruby a little while to settle. But the staff have made extra special efforts to help her acclimatise, and it's really paying dividends! Some of the staff have already won her trust! Ruby is a sensitive and thoughtful girl..... And she loves a scritch from her best buddy Dale! There is a wealth of help and information available on bringing up deaf dogs, training them, helping them to learn without verbal cues. Please don't think 'disabled' - think 'differently abled'. The staff decided that maybe Ruby would like a bit of dog company, and they weren't wrong! Ruby was rather thrilled to meet our resident heart-throb Rocky! Oooooh - can I keep him? Don't they make a handsome pair! Ruby is due for rehoming from 2nd February. We don't do 'buy one get one free at CDH' but very often deaf dogs do much better with a fur-friend by their side, so if you like your dogs big and beautiful, and have a friendly, steady dog who would like a new sister, come on down! If you would like more information, or would like to meet Ruby, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. I had the absolute pleasure of walking this beautiful lady today! I never like choosing who to take so I asked Rob (staff member) to pick for me - knowing I prefer bigger dogs, he told me he had an ABD who I would love and he was not wrong. Rob warned me that Ruby was deaf and that she was quite timid so it may be difficult to take her out. Eventually, Ruby came out and she was a little afraid of her surroundings. I took the lead and she tried to run away from me, obviously not having a clue who I was and why I was there. Without being able to reassure Ruby with words that I didn't mean any harm, Becky (staff member) told me to sit on the floor with my arms wide open. So I sat in a puddle with my arms wide open and Ruby ran towards me as if we were old friends - I think something must have spooked her though because she tried to run away again! Trusting me a little more, we started to walk down the lane and Ruby really seemed to open up and show me affection. I was able to crouch down and she was more than willing to give me cuddles and kisses. Throughout the entire walk, Ruby was constantly nuzzling into my leg just to check that I was there next to her. It was so lovely to see her completely change from a frightened, spooked girl to a trusting, affectionate beauty. When walking on pavements, we tried to walk so that we were facing oncoming traffic as not to spook Ruby and it seemed to work. I think she is definitely pooch-orientated, so much so that when Nilar walked past us on her walk without stopping, Ruby started to whimper as we walked on. We walked past a few apartments with glass doors on our travels and she was absolutely obsessed with her own reflection - and so she should be, she truly is a beautiful girl! Ruby sat for a treat and she took it very gently too. Words honestly can't describe how much I loved walking Ruby this morning, she is such a special girl. I know that there is a lot of work that needs to be put into training a deaf dog. However, in a few short hours, Ruby taught me how special she is and how there are so many other ways of communicating other than talking. She is such a clever girl and she definitely deserves a family who will help her shine! I wish you all the luck in the world, Ruby. You are beautiful! It's dogs like Ruby that make volunteering so rewarding for me.

I've just had a lovely walk with Ruby, she's a strong, determined beautiful girl with a fabulous personality. She whined on leaving the kennels but with some gentle coaxing and my refusing to give up we made it to the end of the lane, stopped for some getting to know you gentle introductions. You could feel her visibly relax.... a treat or two may have helped with reassurance 😜. Then she walked well for the majority of the walk... she is strong but most definitely able to control. I've never experienced a deaf dog before and I realised how much I talk as I walk... I just connected differently with Ruby, she did a lovely sit and paw without asking when I gave her a treat midway through our walk. She loved having her neck scratched under her collar as along her back.... nuzzling for more. We had great fun with a stick she found on the return journey... she obviously wanted to play and was a big tease! Love a bit of mischief! Although when the stick was in her mouth and I went to take it as I was worried about the angle and it going down her throat... she didn't like it... but soon forgave me when she realised I wasn't taking it.. just readjusting it! She didn't mind traffic, bikes or other dogs.... she did cower twice... both times when a couple were walking towards us(different couples) and they did absolutely nothing didn't even acknowledge Ruby, but she cowered when she saw one couple, and barked, growled and then cowered at another couple. She soon recovered with some reassurance.
She is a lovely dog who is just begging for a new home. I would absolutely love to have her, I just don't yet have the time she deserves to spend with a family. I hope she finds a home soon but meanwhile I will happily walk and enjoy time with this little lady.

Ruby may be deaf, but she certainly speaks 'dog' fluently! Benny lurcher has been overlooked time and time again, perhaps because he appears to be anxious and vocal around other dogs, but Ruby really put him at ease when they stepped out together last week!

I had the opportunity to walk Ruby this morning. She was such a pleasure previously I was really pleased to see her. She was a very happy missy and walked well. We had lots of fun and smooches, a waggy tail from Miss Ruby and smiles from me too... then just as we were coming out of Grangemoor area towards Penarth Road heading back to CDH Ruby spotted another pilgrim who she was thrilled to see, and she made a fuss of her as she had someone else with her to hold the dog she was walking. Just as she was out of sight Ruby began pining.... and tugged to follow that walker.... I had a hell of a job getting her back to the CDH... she was very strong and had the lead in her mouth pulling me! All the time no aggression just very determined. she was challenging to distract from her wish to go with the other walker.... temporarily distracting her with treats, sticks and running only worked on a short term basis... I love a challenge but my tactics only worked short term even though I did them repeatedly... Ruby's a clever miss and soon realised my attempts and she returned to her wish to follow the other pilgrim.... hence after a real battle of wills we arrived back at CDH (me sweaty and relieved, Ruby hoarse from pulling and whining!)... but she still gave me a lovely snuggle and a wag of the tail when we said goodbye.
She's a beautiful girl and I think she'll be a very loyal companion with a strong attachment when she finds her perfect sofa... hopefully not long now beautiful girl.

After spying so many gorgeous ABDs on the forum, I knew the next time we came down for walkies we'd have to try to take one of them out. Ruby was the first to catch our eye on the list Tuesday morning and you definitely don't want to miss out on spending some time with this beautiful lady! She came bounding out of the kennels and raring to go, stopping only for a quick 'hello' sniff for both of us before bouncing down the lane. I don't know how old Ruby is but she's definitely a puppy at heart, if not in age, and I think she'd love nothing more than to be off her lead and playing in a garden. She pulled a little initially, which is very normal after being cooped up all night, but was more interested to start with in trying to reach up and give us both hugs. Ruby is a big girl so she can definitely get up there without too much effort for a cuddle, but some treats as distraction and the usual 'four on the floor' routine, she calmed right down. She didn't try to lick us or even jump up at us, and was very gentle the entire time, I think she just wanted a bit of a fuss. Who can blame her?! We also had an impromptu game of tug of war with her lead as we tried to cross over the bridge, but again she was easily distracted with a treat and when we headed back the other direction, she stopped entirely. I'm not sure if she was just in a very playful mood or didn't want to go across the bridge, though when she pulled on the lead it was very much in a playful way and not the same frantic way Snowflake does. Down the lane she did get a little nervous at times, not entirely sure about coming with us, but an easy solution was for one of us to walk a few steps ahead and then crouch down with our arms out. Ruby was only too happy to galumph along for a cwtch! Maybe ten minutes into the walk and Ruby had spent some of her built up energy and was walking wonderfully with us, stopping every now and then to nudge our legs or sniff our hands to make sure we were still there. She behaved impeccably around other dogs but obviously wanted to go and play with them, and was very eager to say hello to all the people we passed as well. Nothing seemed to phase this gorgeous lady! She's very gentle taking treats and will sit when 'asked'. She seems to be very treat-focused, which is great news for training. I thought I was imagining it at first but towards the end of our walk I noticed that Ruby would stop to gaze at her reflection every so often. Usually in shop/show-room windows but even in shiny cars at one point and who can blame her? No doubt Ruby relies much more on her sense of sight and smell - she definitely knew when there were still treats in our pockets - and her ears were constantly perking up throughout the walk. I know it will take a little more time and work to train a deaf dog, not being able to use vocal commands etc, but Ruby is one very smart lady and I imagine a very quick learner. Whoever her future family is, they'll be very lucky to have found such an affectionate and playful girl like Ruby. (unfortunately my camera had a tantrum and the other photos are more blurry white splotches than dog)

Everytime I see Ruby, I fall in love with her even more. Ruby is such a precious, special girl who has so much to love to give. Ruby is so responsive to interaction, she is just desperate to play and be loved. I hope her forever family aren't too far away. Ruby is deaf but I really wouldn't let that put you off, if anything, I think it would make the rehoming process so much more rewarding. It's so lovely to see how much she has come along in the relatively short time that she's been in the home and also to know that she is so willing to learn. Ruby really is a clever and attentive girl, she never walks too far away from your legs, very rarely pulls and is always more than willing to stop for a cuddle, kiss and a treat! I would highly advise anyone to take Ruby out for a walk, what you see in the kennels is definitely not what you get when you take her outside. Admittedly, she's very vocal in her kennel but I have honestly not heard her make a noise while she's out and about, only a little whimper when humans and dogs walk past her without giving her attention. Ruby, you are so special, you have so much to learn and yet I know that you can teach someone so much too. I am in awe of this girl.

Spent some time with this awesome girl yesterday in the garden and had such a laugh. She realllllly loves a treat and took everything so gently just using her lips to take the treat from your hand. The HUGE rope toy in the garden was a firm favourite and we had so gallops chasing that. I like her surely someone out there has a Ruby shaped space in their lives??

Anyone who knows me will know that I absolutely adore Ruby. She is such a special girl who has can lift anybody's mood in an instant. Anybody who knows Ruby will know that she has been in kennels for FAR TOO long and that as a result, she's a little bit stubborn at the beginning of her walks. I honestly think it's because she is so fed up of that lane! However, she's also VERY clever and knows that if you've got some treats in your pocket, you will use them to entice her down the lane! I will say though, it's just the lane, once she's out of the lane, she is happy to walk for hours! A few weeks ago, disaster struck as there were no treats at the home Luckily, I carry a secret stash (not so secret now) of Schmackos in my car, so we made a quick pit stop to get some treats. As soon as I opened the car door, Ruby jumped in and sat in the back, waiting ever so patiently for me to buckle up and drive. It made me smile and also think of how comfortable she looked - she just wanted to get out and explore, however, it was a Thursday evening and Ruby had a curfew so I had to tempt her out of the car with some treats and carry on with the walk. Seeing how excited Ruby was in the car gave me the idea of taking Ruby on a road trip and so last weekend, it was sunny and we decided to drive down to Cosmeston to give Ruby a change of scenery. Again, as soon as the car door opened, Ruby jumped straight in the back and made herself comfortable. Ruby was so well-behaved on the journey, she looked at herself in my rear view mirror for half of the journey and then cuddled jonsscott94 for the rest of it! One side note - she does moult so if you're car proud, you might want to put some covers down before letting her in As soon as we got to Cosmeston, Ruby was in her element, she was so happy to be walking around, sniffing new scents and exploring her new surroundings - a real change from her usual reluctance to walk down the lane. It was such a pleasure to see. Even though she is eager to smell new smells and see new sights, she is never too heavy on the lead, she is such a gentle girl and would much rather stay by your side and enjoy your company than pull you from pillar to post - APART from when she finds some poo to roll around in (she was a nice shade of brown/green when we took her back We encountered a lot of off-lead dogs whilst we were walking around Cosmeston and Ruby was so amazing with each and every one of them - both small and big dogs. I think she loves being around other dogs and learning from them. She just oozed happiness during the entire walk - it was so lovely to see. We found a ball whilst on our travels - she played with it so gently At one point during our walk, a small boy did creep up on Ruby which made Ruby jump - she does get quite anxious when she can't understand what people's intentions are. However, once we got back to the home, 2 little girls calmly approached Ruby, and she was in her element. I'm definitely not an expert in this area but I think that as long as people are aware of Ruby's circumstances and are willing to let Ruby know that they are not there to harm her, Ruby will be ever so loyal and affectionate. I've said it so many times and in so many different ways but Ruby really is the most special, amazing dog and she deserves a loving family. Ruby has taught me so much over the past 5 months that I've known her, I am truly happy when I am with her and I just know that she would be the most perfect addition to somebody's life. She has come so far since she got to the home, from a girl who was once so afraid of her surroundings and didn't know basic commands, to the girl who now, through the home's brilliant time and care has learnt to sit and give paw.

Had the pleasure of spending some time with Ruby today. What an absolute delight this girl is. So clever and ready to have fun and please you. We spent some time in the sensory garden working on Ruby's life skills ready for when her new family find her. Ruby is picking up the sign language that she is being taught very quickly and worked hard at her task today. Everyday is a school day eh Ruby! Even when you're a dog!! youtu.be/99OCX3hV0hkShe had a little parallel walk up the lane with myself and Dale and Bud and they both displayed some lovely doggy manners even though they were very warm in the sunshine. Fingers crossed a play date may be on the books for them soon. Pleasure to spend time with this beautiful girl today. 😊

This gorgeous girl has come such a long way in such a relatively short time. When we first walked Ruby back in March (and she's been booked up ever since! This girl is popular in the morning ) she was a little over eager and quite strong on the lead. Not uncontrollable by any means, just strong and with a lot of pent up energy. Only a few months later and Ruby is an angel on the lead! She was only too happy to walk just at our side and seemed to prefer staying close to us than attempting to venture off ahead or to the side. She does have a little habit at the moment of spinning, especially when she's first out of the kennels. It's obviously a combination of being cooped up all day and being excited to be outside, though she's definitely trying to catch her tail sometimes! With regular exercise, playtime, and training this will be no issue whatsoever! As we couldn't tell her not to do this or distract her with our voices we just kept walking and she soon stopped and settled into her lovely amble. Ruby likes to make sure you're still there every so often with little nudges against your hand or arm, slowing down when she's ready for another fuss. This beautiful lady is just all about her cuddles! She's learning her sign language/hand gestures really well and getting her to sit and give paw was a piece of cake - Ruby is a big lover of her treats and very quickly sussed out where they were hiding and kept a close eye on the bag to make sure none fell out without her noticing. She's one clever cookie! We passed most dogs without any issue and Ruby has proven herself to be very dog-friendly in the garden with other CDH residents. There were two on-lead dogs who she wasn't too sure about but that was mostly because the owner put them on the lead as she saw us approaching ( ) but then walked right up to us to ask if Ruby wanted to say hello ( ). Ruby showed zero aggression though and moved along with us right away when we asked the woman to move back - she just seemed a little unsure about being suddenly bombarded by two dogs and a stranger and I don't really blame her. Ruby takes her treats so gently and just loves having a cwtch and a fuss. At some points she'd start to slow down and seem reluctant to walk, and we were worried she might be a little nervous. Not so. Ruby just likes to make sure she gets her hourly quota of cuddles A quick pat and she'd be ready to keep going, tail wagging happily! I'm fairly sure she'd move for a treat as well but cuddles have fewer calories. I'm so glad we finally got the chance to take Ruby out again and I hope she can try next time we're down, though ideally she'll be off to her forever family soon enough. Ruby has been waiting in the kennels for far too long and more than deserves the safety, stability, and comfort of a loving forever home where she can truly blossom. She's still such a young girl and has a lot of years ahead of her, hopefully as part of a wonderful family who'll love her as much as she'll definitely love them!
