What kind of home is Ruby looking for, it may help potential adopters to know exactly what she needs in terms of her deafness that maybe a hearing dog wouldnt need

Hi Sorepaws - welcome to the forum! I'm afraid the staff wouldn't consider rehoming two dogs together, it's not considered a good idea. By all means come and meet them and if you wanted to apply for one you could complete an application form. Ideally you would want to get one dog completely settled into your home before considering getting a second dog. Hope this helps x

Thought that might be the case unless the dogs were already buddies but thanks for the reply. We will be down at the shelter very soon with our fingers crossed someone wants our sofa.

Yup - there's been a lot going on behind the scenes - we're going the extra mile for Ruby! She has had a few playdates and meetings with a possible rehomer and we have arranged to do a home visit for a few hours on the weekend with an experienced volunteer who knows Ruby really well. As she was returned so quickly after she was rehomed first time around we are doing everything in tiny baby-steps with Ruby. Keep everything crossed for her

Fingers crossed the next potential home will be suitable, such a shame the other apps were not considered suitable, I knew both potential rehomers and either would have given ruby a great long term loving stable home how is her stress in kennels now?

Fingers crossed the next potential home will be suitable, such a shame the other apps were not considered suitable, I knew both potential rehomers and either would have given ruby a great long term loving stable home how is her stress in kennels now? She's getting plenty of walks Debs, and garden time. She's been happy as larry whenever I've seen her. She doesn't like strangers staring at her in her kennel, but that's not a new thing, she has always been the same, which is a shame because she doesn't show herself at her best to casual visitors. I don't know much about any previous applications, I met one lovely applicant, fab home for the right dog and obviously I don't know for sure, this is only a guess, but possibly she will have been left for too long during the day - Ruby will need someone around for a lot of the time during the first few weeks and months while she settles and gets into a solid routine. As you know we don't get directly involved with the applications but the staff should be able to give feedback to anyone who isn't successful with an application. I hope this happened and the previous applicants were happy with the staff decision. xx

We took Ruby out again on Wednesday and she was an absolute star. She certainly has a little bit of a stubborn streak and will plant her bum firmly down if she doesn't want to go somewhere, but all it takes is a quick pat on the head or cuddle and she'll trott on again very happily at your side. I expect she'd move pretty sharpish for a treat as well, but rather than teach her that she'll get a treat if she refuses to budge, we'd wait until she was moving and walking nicely before giving her a yummy reward. Ruby is a very very clever girl and training with her is not going to be difficult, especially with some nibbles handy as incentive. She made sure to keep a close eye on Dad's hands and bag, as she knew that's where the treats often appeared Fingers are safe from being nibbled though, so have no fear! Even when I was fumbling about with my camera trying to get it to focus on her gorgeous face, as she sat waiting for a treat, she waited until the treat was offered and very gently took it from my hand. Every dog we passed was without a single fuss - Ruby was just happy to do her thing, but from other walker tales I know she'd just love to have a play with them in the garden. Ruby is such a playful lady but, despite her size, seems to try her best not to overpower you. She'd get the bouncies every now and then and pounce on an unsuspecting stick or bound up to whichever one of her walkers had strayed too far ahead/behind, but Ruby walks beautifully on her lead and does her best to save playtime for the garden. We only had a few seconds of the spins this time after she'd had a good old chew at a nice branch, but we walked on and quick as anything she settled back into her lovely ambling gait. Next time if we're allowed we'll have to try and take her into the garden and watch her at full pelt, surrounded by toys and in her element! I honestly couldn't say what Ruby needs that a hearing dog wouldn't, the staff know what sort of family she's looking for far better than I ever could, but if you've got a Ruby-shaped hole in your life and are lacking in your daily playtime and cwtches, our gorgeous girl might be the one for you!

Oh Ruby! Walkies with this gorgeous girl are starting to become a common occurrence for us. She's just so relaxing to be around and never stops smiling, and neither do you when you're with her! Even when she becomes reluctant to walk and decides to sit or lie down in the middle of the path while giving you those gorgeous 'butter-wouldn't-melt' doe-eyes of hers, all you need to do to get her walking again is have a quick cwtch. All Ruby really wants is a cuddle! She constantly looks to you for reassurance during walks, and she seems to find a lot of comfort in bumping your hand with her nose. This beautiful lady just loves people and wants to be around them all the time! There's nothing much new I can say about how she is on walks - she's gentle and responsive, walks perfectly at your side, is interested in other dogs but easy to move along. Ruby is just a wonderful companion for walking and for life! We haven't taken her into the garden yet but Ruby has wonderful playful side that shows occasionally while walking. I would recommend not running with her as that gets her quite excited, and when she becomes playful she might try to play tug o' war with the lead or gallop over to the nearest stick. However she's very easy to calm down again. Best to save playtime for the garden!
On Tuesday when we stopped for treats and water, an off-lead terrier appeared out of no-where and bundled over to say hello to Ruby. Thankfully he seemed friendly but obviously I did my best to move Ruby away as Dad asked the owner to call his dog back. Eventually the owner did and they walked on, but Ruby was as good as gold the entire time! She moved with me and didn't try to pull back, and was more than happy to be distracted by cuddles and a treat. Treats are one of Ruby's greatest loves in life and that, coupled with her just being an overall smart cookie, is a good indicator for future training. So long as she doesn't come to expect treats in order to walk when she refuses (trust me, a quick cuddle does the job!) and her future family make sure she knows treats are given and not stolen out of pockets Despite her love of treats, Ruby is always incredibly gentle taking them. No fingers nibbled around this lady!
On Thursday we took Ruby out again (can't resist that face!) and she had a bit of a startle when confronted with a jogger bent over. The woman had pulled a muscle and was bent down ahead of us, and Ruby just did not know what to make of it! She was a little anxious and tried to hide behind us while also turning around, but we managed to reassure her and when the jogger stood up, Ruby was back to normal with a waggy tail and said a quick hello as the jogger apologised for scaring her
I can't praise Ruby enough and I really hope she finds the perfect forever family soon enough. She's been waiting for so long already, and really deserves to be in her forever home and being spoiled absolutely rotten!
(I've noticed her bottom lip seems to stick out a bit sometimes, which just makes her even more adorable!)

Ruby is an absolutely amazing girl. She’s come on so far since she arrived at CDH and she continues to learn more every day, she responds well to commands and sign language. Ever since I first took Ruby to cosmeston, every time I take her out for a walk, she sits patiently by my car waiting to go on another adventure. Ruby is so clever and has such a great memory, she will be so easy to train when she finds her new family. I’ve taken Ruby to Cosmeston a few times and each time, I fall in love a little more. It’s truly amazing to see her in a new and different environment, she loves exploring new places and really enjoys her walks. Whenever we’ve been out and any off-lead dogs have approached, she has always been so well behaved, she just wants to meet, greet and play with every dog she meets. She loves humans too, as long as she knows that they’re not a threat to her or to whoever is walking her. Ruby is loyal and ever so friendly. Being in the garden with Ruby is such a pleasure too. She loves to play fetch with any toy she can find and she will always bring it back and drop it at your feet. I don’t know what else to say that hasn’t already been said a thousand times. Ruby is the most amazing, soft, loyal, friendly and beautiful girl. I really hope that someone sees the beautiful girl that I, the other volunteers and the staff at the Home have fallen in love with.

Ruby didn't really want to walk today (second walk, as I understand, she might have been more willing in the morning). Just really struggled leaving the kennels and going up the lane (in contrast, she was quite good on the lead on the way back). We barely reached the industrial estate parking lot when we decided it's best to take her back. I just really hope she didn't like us rather than kennel life taking a toll on this lovely girl (she's been in CDH for soooo long, a couple of months short of a full year ). Good news is that two gentlemen in a car stopped us to ask about her (when she was at her worst too - midway chowing on her lead, chasing her tail and jumping up). They said they've adopted from CDH before and showed some interest in beautiful Ruby, so I hope they come along to meet her at some point. There are people who understand and love you, Ruby! Your perfect humans should be here soon! I was very happy to see the post right above mine as Ruby seems a lot jollier there than she was today! Hey, we all have bad days! But I really think it's the home environment that makes the difference. Let's not let kennel life influence Ruby much longer! Just wanted to bump her up on here too! Look at this sassy lady's gorgeous face!

Hi debs91067, I’m very pleased to say that Ruby has left the building! It took a little while for her new peeps to find her - but her patience paid off and it was worth the wait!
