Two more young, large breed newbies arrived at the Home today.
Siblings Gambit, and his sister Misty in kennel 9 have been signed over to the Home due to a change in their owners circumstances.
As the dogs had only just arrived when we met them, and are not vaccinated, we wouldn't normally get pics for their rehoming threads until they have had a chance to settle, but we couldn't resist popping into their kennels to say 'hi' - and as we had the camera with us, and a few treats cannily hidden in our pockets...... Yes Gambit! Treats!!!!
Cane Corso's are L-A-R-G-E breed dogs. It doesn't mean they are 'more difficult' than small dogs, it doesn't mean they need more exercise than small dogs... it does mean they eat a lot more than your average knee-high pooch though, they can be expensive to insure, and obviously they have more pulling-power than a poodle - so it's imperative that they learn the important life-lessons, how to walk nicely on a lead, a sound recall etc. Apparently Gambit and Misty were expected to exercise themselves in a garden, so we don't know how well they will walk on a lead. As they aren't vaccinated yet they won't be able to go on the walkers list until next Friday (as they won't see our vets until Monday). So we've still got a lot to find out about our two giant adolescents!
We've been told they are good with children, with other dogs, and they travel well. But they have definitely missed out on some of their early-learning opportunities, so rehomers will need to be prepared to help them both make up for lost time. One thing we can definitely attest to though - both Gambit and Misty were as gentle as kittens taking treats from our fingers!
Gambit and his sister will be available for rehoming from 31st March. Sadly they can't share a kennel, as neither of them are neutered/spayed, and it's likely that the staff will be looking for separate homes for them.
If you would like more information, or would like to meet Gambit or his sister Misty, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm.
