Please give a gentle Friends welcome to Pip Pip is around twelve years old, and has been signed over to the Home with his bestie Jessie, due to a change in his owner's circumstances. Pip is morbidly obese. His tummy and genitals drag on the floor when he walks, he must be unbearably uncomfortable, but although he is still completely frightened and bewildered at his recent change of circumstances, Pip still seeks out gentle and reassuring human comfort. Given his condition, we can't imagine that Pip has spent much, if any time outdoors recently. His nails are curled and digging in to his pads, and unless it has been on very soft grass or carpet, it's unlikely that Pip has been able to walk anywhere at all for some time. Although Pip has lived with Jessie and the two are quite fond of each other, at the moment they don't seem overly bonded, and to give each of them the best possible 'rest of their lives' the staff will consider rehoming them separately. We will be giving Pip and Jessie lots of separate 'special time' over the next few days to see how they interact with us when they are together, and when they are alone. Watcha doin' down there Pip? During the time we spent with them this afternoon, Pip and Jessie seemed a little more interested in what was going on around them. It would be a stretch to say that either of them were enthusiastic or excited, but they both became more relaxed as the afternoon went on... Pip obviously has mobility issues due to his weight. He's still quite keen to explore, but it does mean he can sometimes get himself into a pickle! Rescue me Aunty Jen! Taking a break in the shade... We didn't subject Pip to the indignity of the weighing scales today, but he will be seeing our vets either tomorrow or Wednesday morning though to check his heart and general health, so we should have some idea of how much weight he needs to lose. It's going to be a slow and difficult journey, but Pip won't know himself once he starts to shed those extra pounds! It really doesn't get any worse than this... Depending on what the vets say, Pip may not be ready to go to his forever home for a few weeks. Ideally we would like to establish a healthy and nutritious diet and an exercise plan appropriate to his condition, which may include gentle hydro-therapy, and get him on the road to wellness before he goes to his forever family. The staff will take applications on Pip though, and if you'd like more information or would like to meet him, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. Hi , I would be interested in having Pip in our home, is he still available? is he still in foster care? Thanks, Sara Hi! Pip was lucky enough to have a fab foster home when he first arrived to help him get through a rather difficult time as he adjusted to his new life. He and his bestie, Jessie Westie are available for rehoming now they are both well on the road to fitness, but they have been through so much and the staff feel it would be very unkind to split them up, so they need to be rehomed together. They are both utterly charming little dogs! So if you'd like to meet them pop down to the Home. x

We had the absolute pleasure of taking Pip out this morning in the heat! He was not that keen to walk at first so I carried him down the lane. When we got to the grass area I put him down and he happily plonked around. He has lost so much weight and is doing really well. He trotted all the way back wagging his tail all the way despite the heat and effort for him. He's a darling little boy, good luck Pip x

We took Pip and Jessie for a walk this morning. Well, when I say a walk, Pip refused to walk up the lane away from the Dogs Home so I had to carry him to the end of the lane. From there he was quite happy to walk back down the lane towards the Dogs Home! So funny. To make sure he got some exercise we did it all over again, I felt a bit silly carrying a dog all the way up the lane but it did the trick! So at least he got his exercise and I also carried him over to the bit of grass on the trading estate where he had a little walkabout. And he is definitely feeling lighter to carry than he was this time last week so all these walkies must be doing the trick.... He definitely doesn't want to go anywhere without Jessie though, these two were practically joined at the hip... He is such a happy little chappy and Jessie is such a sweetie, how could anyone resist the pair of them?

Pip has left the building Pip lost an unbelievable 3.8 kilo's while he was with us! His tummy no longer drags on the floor, he has spent the last few weeks scootling around Cardiff Dogs Home, getting into all sorts of doggy mischief, and winning so many hearts! We're absolutely thrilled to bits to see him looking so well and happy with his lovely new family!
