very very positive experience in the Cardiff Camera Centre in the Morgan Arcade. really friendly, know their stuff, and are often prepared to match the price from a competitor... and personally I'd much rather support a small private business than putting more cash into the coffers of Argos shareholders or the like... Plus I have much more faith in them helping with any problems rather than returning something to a major retailer. I just picked up a 50mm f1.8 for a really good price. ;D *shimmies* Cheryl, we must pop to St Fagans again as I'd like to test this little beauty in poor light conditions.

1.8 - i used to hate it as i couldn't get it to be very sharp - it look sharp , but when you enlarge it - it wasn't all that sharp - . i can honestly say that my canon lens its sharpest at f/3.2 and beyond on f1.8 it performs also good but not as sharp, and i like my pic to be tack sharp where i want the to be (im a bit pedantic - first test shots look terrible to me (they weren't bad but it wasn't as sharp- so i didn't like it lol .Now i use it 98% of the time - i love it now. what i dont like is the cheap toy feel of my lens:) nice pictures ;D ;D ;D what you think about your Nikon 50mm ? my canon went 2 days ago to be cleaned as i was doing couple pictures on the beach. .

Conny is just amazing!! I'm hoping she can teach me bits cause I'm a brand new beginner after buying a camera after meeting up for walkies together. Ive just been watching videos to get my head around some of the technical stuff and I managed to follow you lot with your technical speak! just!!

Steph, you've taken some really nice pics with your new camera! Don't put yourself down. The technical side behind it can 'sound' complicated but it isn't when you look at it in different ways. A good "exposure" is nothing other than the right amount of light captured over the right amount of time. For example look at your camera as if it were an eye. Your lens is your pupil... it can open up or contract depending on the light available... that's what they call "aperture"... This determines your "depth of field" also... (the extend to which everything is sharp or the background may be blurred). digital-photography-school.com/moving-toward-manual-settings-understanding-aperture-a-beginners-guideThen there is kind of the speed of the "blink" of the eye, which is the time spent for the shutter to click, e.g. for how long you let in the available light... that's your "shutter speed"... digital-photography-school.com/shutter-speedThat's enough for one day. x

Pati, I'm really quite fond of the 50mm 1.8... although you have to bear in mind it's an FX lens and I only have a DX body at the moment so it's effectively a 75mm... but I was really happy with what it did outdoors... I mean you kind of use it what it's meant for... it's a bit useless as a macro etc... but see what you think... this was one of my favourite shots and I think it's pretty crisp...

this shot is completely "as is"... no contrast added, not meddled with brightness or saturation, just as it came out.
f1.8 at 1/4000 (ISO100) and no exposure bias.

By tack sharp i mean if i enlarge pic to 300 % -,my 1.8 is good when shooting at distance.i prefer this lens as is small so i dont have to carry anything heavy with me .i have no intrest in macro so i dont have to buy any lens .i love people photography (and constantly searching for new -interesting facesx )the most, nature is not my thing .i like fixed lenses for the simple reason -it makes you more creative ,as you cant just zoom in xxx .

The great thing about photography is that there are genres and styles for everybody. The purist versus the photoshop experts, the landscapes, the macros, still life... people... Personally I think I come at it from the opposite side to you Paty, in that I love macros... I will happily chase a butterfly for half an hour etc. And I love nature per se... landscapes, animals... And in the rare event that I do something by way of post production, it's only to tweak the photo slightly but never add any 'arty' effects. The vast majority of digi art stuff in photography (with the exception of very well done rather than overcooked HDR) leaves me cold mostly. The type of people photography I like is basically the candid variety. I love controversial street photography, social documentary type of stuff. I also quite like clever Urban Exploration / Urbex stuff www.flickr.com/groups/urbexhdr/... I've seen HDR used quite well there. There is a whole group of folk taking great images of derelict asylums etc. www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=4
