I have to give up smoking - Apparently I've got the beginnings of gum disease and smoking makes it a lot worse and if I keep on all my teeth will fall out according to the very severe lecture I got from my dentist this afternoon.
So any tips anybody - have you used anything to stop smoking that has worked

I tried Nicorette gum, used it for 3 years, then my dentist told me to stop chewing it because I was wearing away my jaw bone So I started smoking again

Carry small tin of wet cigarette ash and butts around with you. Smell it every time you want a cigarette and it will put you off. Not used this myself (shameless refusal to quit) but apparently it works. Alternativly use Corsodil mouthwash to help gum problems.

Good idea Kath re the stinking ashtrays and I'm already swilling the evil tasting Mothwash Hypnotherapy was really unsuccessful for me I went to somebody recommended by a friend as good and £40 a session. When, at the end, she charged me more than double this, I was so shocked I went straight out and lit a cigarette

In all seriousness, though, you can get a prescription from your doctor for Lozenges, I think they're also Nicorette brand. The good thing about them is that they're designed to be used alongside cigarettes so, rather than facing the daunting task of never having another cigarette, ever , you can start slowly by replacing one or two of your "usual" cigarettes with a Lozenge. Especially handy if you have trigger times when you always have a cigarette. They're tiny and tasteless, just leave them to melt under your tongue....and they have quite a kick Good luck

Funnily enough Kath I'm currently on NiQuitin mini lozenges and they are working using the replace the cigarette occassionally method. Trouble is think I could get addicted to them to Somebody I know claims to have given up 6 yrs ago but is totally addicted (they won't admit it) to Nicorette gum and chews it constantly. Sure that can't be good for you

At the moment he is spending£10 aweek on it, he's been trying to get off it for last six months ;D

How about we SPONSER you to quit? That way you would have the incentive of all those homeless poochies. Although personally I think that quitting smoking is morally wrong as I like not being the only one who enjoys the evil weed

Ok, I 'm trying this:
Mix a tablespoon of baking soda in an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it, twice a day for the first week, then once a day for a second week. The soda neutralizes the body acids, retains nicotine in the blood, and thus reduces the desire for tobacco.
Put cigarettes right out of the way. I read that one woman buried them in a flower pot at the bottom of the garden making it difficult if she was thinking of giving in
If you have to have a cigarette, take one puff and then extinguish it, keep using that one cigarette.
See, no actual promises but I'm going to give it a really good go ;D

wtg Ang! Are you really doing it? Really, cross your heart, going to try? Starting when? If it's tomorrow, I'll do it with you. I have Bern here, who will know if I don't do it, I think Bern has a nose like a bloodhound for tobacco But I do need to speak with Clive Ang, if we're going to do it, let's do it, but don't think you'll have an easy ride because you don't live in Wales Well, is it Q-Day tomorrow then? Anyone else want to climb aboard the puffa train that is heading towards Healthsville?
