Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to ask this but hoping someone may be able to offer some advice. I recently rehomed the lovely Bear (an Akita). Whilst at the home he had great reviews about his behaviour around other dogs & I experienced this for myself. Our first walk together he was such a good boy, he didn't mind at all when dogs ran up to him for a sniff. But lately he's shown signs of aggression :/. Sometimes he doesn't mind at all but he started growling at two small(ish) dogs that ran up to him and I had to pull him away. Today he passed lots of dogs and was absolutely fine, but then he saw one medium sized dog (not on a lead). The dog didnt even approach Bear, just ignored him, but Bear started growling and barking at it and pulling on the lead to try and get at him, no matter what I did/said. This dog was in the company of another dog that Bear completely ignored! I've no idea why he's suddenly started doing this but I don't want it to become a problem; I want to fix this. Does anyone have any experience of this or any suggestions as to what's going on? Also any suggestions as to what I can do would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Kealie
If the two small dogs ran up to Bear in invited, it sometimes scares dogs..his barking and growling is a sign that he is not comfortable in that situation. I'd speak to a behaviourists for tips on how to correct this behaviour he is displaying. I know the home recommends Caroline, I'm sure someone will assist with the full name. Good luck :-)

Really hope you manage to nip this in the bud, as you said, Bear was a dream dog whilst he was in the home, I'm sure Caroline will be able to help. You've done absolutely the right thing by seeking advice before his behaviour gets too entrenched, fingers crossed it's just a settling-in thing, and you'll be able to help him over whatever is worrying him. xx Caroline Cowan, Cardiff Canine Citizens

Hi, can somebody help me please? There is a man that lives near my sister that has a pit bull type dog. This dog is very very ill, I have no idea what is wrong with it. He told me its not eating and he thinks its dying. Well as you can imagine I got upset on hearing this and offered to take him and the dog to the local vets and pay myself for any treatment as the man is a drug user and has not got the money to pay the vet. But he refused my offer saying that the vet will put the dog to sleep because its a pit bull, do you know if that is true or not? I rang my vet and the person I spoke to on reception was quite vague. Can someone please help me, the dog is suffering. Thank you Tania.
Mod note: Hi Tanya, this was posted on one of the dogs rehoming threads, so we've moved it to this section. Debs advice is sound, please contact the RSPCA if you are concerned about the dog in question. x

Just a quick warning!
I was wakey wakey walking this morning and cleared up quite a lot of glass from the entrance to the strip of grass that runs off the lane to CDH between the units on the industrial estate and the river (on the left if you're going towards the home). There were also some pieces in the grass/mud on the edge of the lane near the units end and these were quite hard to see so I may have missed some. I only noticed when Lexi dived in for a sniff but I often hold dogs onto the verge there of a car needs to get past.
It was quite bright today and not raining so easy enough to see but if anyone's down there when it's a bit gloomy I would stay on the other side to avoid cut paws!
Belated Happy New Year all
Sue
ps No Pablo today and rumour has it he's off to a forever home. Brilliant news.

Hi Tania
That sounds as though it's a really distressing situation - and you're very kind to offer help.
The advice about the RSPCA is obviously sound - but, in the short term, if your friend's dog needs help urgently, try the PDSA hospital which I think is on Bute Road heading from Cardiff City Centre to Cardiff Bay. They will treat animals for a very small charge or for free, if your friend's circumstances are difficult. They're a charity. Their number will be on the internet and they may be able to offer some advice over the phone.
I really hope your friend's dog gets the help he so urgently needs really soon

MISSING DOG
Sorry to be pretty vague on this post - but while I was out taking my dogs for a walk this evening, I met a lady who was searching for her son's dog. She was a bit frantic so I didn't get the dog's name but apparently he's black and has got out from his home in the Lavernock Road area of Penarth this evening.
Horribly vague I know, but if anybody sees or hears of a black dog who looks alone and lost, I have her address and could let her know.
I've told her to contact both CDH and Croft Kennels over the next few days, just in case
Thanks for your help

I went to the home earlier today only to find it was shut until 2:30pm for staff training. I vagely now remember reading somewhere once that is closes on some thursdays but had completely forgotten about this. It is an hour round trip for me to get to the home so I don't want to drive there if it's not open. Is there any way that Cardiff Dogs Home could post up announcements such as closures so we can all check before we leave in case anything important needs to be said. It's me age you see, I forget things now!

Hey Garrick, sadly Larry is still looking for his home, his thread is on page 2 of the Dogs Looking for Homes. At the top of the page is a tab with 1 and 2, if you click on the 2 it takes you to the second page

Thanks for letting me know Becky - I stupidly didn't look for page 2 - was blithely hoping it hadn't spilled over to a second page I suspect!
I shall tweet Larry's picture now - fingers crossed there may be somebody out there looking for a great dog who's lots of fun. Having had two lurchers, I can't sing their praises highly enough. They're fab dogs....and pretty low maintenance for those who don't have hours and hours to walk. They're the sprinters of the dog world, 30-40 mins of running around and then they'll generally opt to snooze for quite a while. Every dog is different of course but that's been my experience up to now
Need to find someone to LOVE LARRY!
