Have been left feeling very dissappointed after a visit to the dogs home on Sunday.
We enquired about a dog via email during the week but didn't get a response.
We telephoned on Sunday morning to ask if we could take the dog we were very interested in for a walk and was told that there were two applications on him already. We hurried down to the home and were advised to make the application there and then so we would be the 3rd and final applicant. We did it and were quite excited at the potential of offering a loving home for this beautiful pooch.
We took him for a walk and he was sick significantly 7 times quite badly so we returned him to the shelter asap. We told a member of staff that he had been quite poorly and if she had any incling as to what may be wrong with him and were snapped at to be told "Im not a vet, No idea" and took him straight off us.
Whilst waiting for my car keys to be returned, with quite another surly member of staff, the dog was immediately taken back outside and handed over to another family who were also very interested, the father in the family appeared to be one of the volunteer dog walkers as he was wearing one of the purple sweaters. The male member of staff was explaining that there were only TWO applications for the dog and they should apply right away. I approached the male member of staff and explained that the dog had just been very sick a number of times during our walk and that we had also just applied to rehome him making us the third and final applicant. He looked at me, ignored me and walked away with the family telling them more about the dog. Do volunteer dog walkers get preferential approvement on rehoming?
It seems we were turned down immediately, ignored and very dissappointed in how we and the dog were treated.

Bluebell, I'm so sorry you had a bad experience at the Home We are all volunteers on this page, we don't get involved at all in the rehoming process, we have absolutely no influence on the staff in that respect. I have sent you a private message, please please don't lose heart, don't give up looking for your forever friend, the dog who needs you most will find you. xx

Thanks so much or your response Baglady. We really were just totally dissappointed and disheartened :( I havent received a message yet, maybe the system is on a go slow today lol xx Hi bluebelle. I understand your disappointment, believe me; so I'd like to tell you my experience. When I made my applications for a dog in the kennel of Rome, I was refused because my flat was considered too small (no comment!). After some time (for a number of circumstances too long to explain) I took my first dog, Kikko, and he was definitely my best choise in my life; to be honest, he chose me. Don't give up, don't be angry, don't despair: YOURDOG is somewhere and soon or later HE/SHE will find you! All the best

I really hope dog walkers aren't given preferential treatment. Have you heard anything back about your application? Please don't let this put you off rescuing a different pooch, they are all very sweet dogs in the home and there might be another one who fits into your sofa just as well of the one you first fell for. Best of luck for finding your next fluffy companion

Hi Piratemouse, the staff make all the rehoming decisions based on the needs of the individual dog, not on whether the applicant is a walker.

Hi Stefano, Yes we were dissapointed but we will take that on the chin as it wasnt meant to be. Just so dissapointed in how we were ignored and treated really. I have every faith that the dog we can offer a home to will choose us when the time is right x (PS - not sure how to use the fourm buttons so if the post look odd, yes its my doing lol)

Ive also been informed that dog walkers arent given preferential treatment in the rehoming process Again just disappointed that my voice wasnt heard wheres a dog walkers was, but c'est la vie!

Bluebelle - I'm still not sure what you mean about dogwalkers voices being heard and yours not? The person you saw in purple was not a volunteer dog walker, he was just a member of the public who happened to have a purple top on We would urge anyone who wishes to bring something to the attention of the Manager at the Home to contact them directly. There is an on-line form on the Council's website which anyone can use HEREScroll down to the bottom of the page and hit the 'Comment' or 'Complaint' button. The staff don't post on this forum, so are unable to explain or defend their actions, so it's not really fair to comment about the staff on this page as they have no way to respond. As Stefano says, keep the faith! The dog who is destined to spend the rest of his/her life with you will find you
