Please give a warm and gentle welcome to Jasper Jasper was signed over to Cardiff Dogs Home from a neighbouring local authority. He has clearly had a bit of a rough time recently. His skin is sore, and bare in patches on his back and between his shar-pei folds, and poor Jasper's eyes were very inflamed and weeping when he was first found. He was prescribed medication for his eyes, but it's likely he will need entropian surgery to save his sight. Despite his poor condition - Jasper must have been feeling absolutely wretched when he arrived - he has been incredibly friendly and gentle with all the Friends Pilgrims he has met. And with strangers by the looks! A family member of Jasper's previous owner has told us Jasper is good around other dogs, friendly with people, but he hasn't lived around children previously. Jasper loves his walkies! We have no idea whether he has been walked regularly, and he's always very happy to be out of his kennel, but he does settle into a nice gentle pace once the excitement of being out in the fresh air wears off a little! Jasper is being treated for his skin condition, and his rich black/brown brush coat should be looking luxuriously gorgeous in no time! Jasper loves treats, and he is sooooooo gentle when he take them! He takes his time, and is so careful not to let his teeth touch skin, even when there's pate on the menu! Who couldn't love this wrinkly face? As Jasper has been signed over to Cardiff Dogs Home, the staff will take applications on him immediately, but he won't be leaving until the staff and vets are happy that his skin and eye conditions have improved. If you would like more information, or would like to meet him, please phone the Dogs' Home: 029 2071 1243 or visit Cardiff Dogs' Home, Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road, open 7 days a week, 10.30 - 4pm. I had the pleasure of meeting Jasper on Wednesday and going out for a walk prior to his move down to CDH.
He is a lovely chap! I say walk... it was definitely a walk 2 paces stop and sniff kind of gig for the first 20 minutes. Jasper loves to investigate smells but given how poor his eyesight has been I think that's entirely understandable.
Once we made it as far as the open space in the park we decided a little trot would be in order. And boy does this fella trot beautifully! A lovely slack lead and he didn't try to out pace me. A couple of times he looked back for reassurance but he was an absolute dream!
Jasper also met a group of local council workers whilst we were out who were curious about his story. Jasper behaved immpecably around what could have been a somewhat intimidating group of strangers for a dog with poor eyesight.
Jasper is a lovely natured fella who certainly deserves to find his forever sofa! 😊

Although I normally walk at NCDH, we popped down to CDH today and after walking Coco we decided to give Jasper his 2nd outing of the day.
Jasper is looking sooooo much better since I saw him last week. His eyes are clearer and his coat is much improved!
True to form Jasper was nose to the ground and all about the smells. A little firm on the lead but nothing that couldn't be reined in with some simple voice commands.
This was the first time Jasper had met my children (aged 11 & 8) but as I knew Jasper I knew there wouldn't be any problems. He's as gentle as a lamb - especially if there's a promise of biscuits! The girls laid a trail of biscuits down in the grass and Jasper had fun playing hunt the biscuit although it was noticeable that his eyesight isn't the best as a couple of times he saw what he thought might be a biscut only to find it was a stone. But a tap of the foot and Jasper soon followed the sound, nose to the floor to locate his treats.
Jasper passed a few other CDH residents whilst out on our walk. Although he was curious to investigate, he wasn't vocal or agressive in anyway. I just think Jasper relys on his nose & ears to fill in the gaps that are missing from his sight.
When we got back to CDH we headed down to the river. This was the first time I have ever seen Jasper scared. I can only think that the sun shining on the water spooked him but some verbal reassurance that all was okay and Jasper regained his confidence.
He really is a lovely fella who with continued care I'm sure will only continue to grow in confidence.
Maybe see you soon Jasp but hand on heart I hope you find your new home before next time!

Who can resist a scrummy squishy Shar Pei? Certainly not us! Jasper is just the most handsome boy and the staff were all lavishing him with compliments and praises as he came out to us. He's a well-built dog and can be quite strong on the lead when he's trying to burn off some energy, but it's only understandable when he's been cooped up for most of the night and morning. Jasper knows where he wants to go, particularly when there's a smell involved that needs sniffing and marking, but he's not uncontrollable by any means and towards the end of our walk he was walking with plenty of slack on the lead. We passed quite a few dogs and Jasper showed a little interest but didn't pull towards them and was quite content to just walk on past. We did encounter three off-lead large dogs who we'd met earlier with Deeta and unforunately the dogs weren't that interested in staying with their owner, but Jasper was very polite as we tried to move him away from them. I'm not sure he was all that thrilled with them interrupting his walk but there wasn't any barking or growling or signs of aggression. He's a very well-mannered boy! Jasper took his treats so gently - all squishy (and maybe a bit slobbery) lips and zero teeth - and sat and gave paw quite happily in exchange. He also had a nice long drink so make sure you bring enough water if the weather is still warm when you're out walking. We tried Jasper with a tennis ball but he wasn't too fussed at the time, just far more interested in making the most of his walkies. He does seem to have trouble with his sight at times, especially when judging how high or low things are, and a few times we noticed him crouch down as though he was walking under something but there was nothing overhead. It's possible he's seeing the shadows of other objects and ducking just in case. He also had some lovely coconut oil on to help with his skin, and his coat looks so much better from his first photos already! The coconut oil massage from CDH spa comes highly recommend apparently! Jasper has had a tough time of things but he's still as gentle and sweet as can be, and deserves to be spread out on a comfy sofa of his very own sooner rather than later!

Can anyone tell me how Jasper is doing? Haven't seen any pics or updates about him on Twitter recently. Such a lovely fella!

Hi we saw the gorgeous Jasper on Monday morning while we were out with a couple of other dogs. We didn't manage to get to stroke him as we had our hands full, but he was looking very happy and was being very affectionate with his human companion. He is such a beautiful dog, that face is ridiculously cute. I hope someone falls for him soon.
