Please welcome Charlie This darling little livewire arrived at Newport City Dogs Home a few weeks ago. When we first met him, he had zero muscle mass, his coat was urine stained, he looked like he had spent his few few months of life shut up in a box. We soon discovered that Charlie is a little older than we first thought, probably aged 2-3 years of age, but he had clearly missed out on his puppyhood. As we didn't know whether Charlie had ever lived indoors, how he would cope with a 'normal' family life, we thought it would be a good idea to get some help assessing Charlie in a home environment before putting up his rehoming thread. Charlie has enjoyed a week's holiday with a young family to help build up his strength and get used to living in a family environment, he came back with excellent references, clean in the house, verrrrry loving and affectionate, and a joy to be around! Charlie has clearly had a deprived puppyhood, and understandably he is eager to make up for lost time and has been struggling to learn the concept of sharing... So Charlie is off to stay with Miss Jen and Lola for a few days of doggy bootcamp Jen and Lola (and their kitties) will be continuing Charlie's assessment over the next few days and we're looking forward to finding about a lot more about this handsome chap! Charlie will be returning to Newport City Dogs Home after the Bank Holiday, so if you'd like to meet him please contact NEWPORT CITY DOGS HOME for more information. TEL 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm, on weekdays, 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 3.30pm on Saturday. Please note: the home is CLOSED on Sundays. Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include 1st vaccination, flea & worm treatment, neutering and microchip.

Charlie did live with a toddler for a week when he first came in, but he has had a very sheltered life (probably kept in a crate) and some of his behaviours have been a little bit challenging during his settling in period. He has just spent another week on home respite with an experienced owner (and her very well behaved little dog) so we could get a fuller assessment.
Over the week I have had Charlie he has been introduced to lots of different environments and animals and has coped well with most things. He has some issues when it comes to food and needs to be fed meals and given any long lasting treats seperately from other animals, but he is good when treats are being handed out by a person and can cope with sitting by another dog to have a treat. He still needs to learn some manners around other dogs in the home, but is a fast learner and I think living with another dog will really help him with this. He has also been a little vocal sometimes when he is on-lead and sees something 'strange', eg sheep, sometimes other dogs, but this is keen interest, not aggression. He has a high energy and play drive so needs to be rehomed with a dog who is similar, as he would soon annoy a dog who didn't want to play most of the day. He has met our cats and although is very interested in them just wants to sniff them and find out what they are and so retreats if hissed at so I think he could live happily with cats. He has also met horses and was very respectful around them. He has good recall already and is clean in the house. He has been left for up to 4 hours at a time with dog company and coped reasonably well with this. He has chewed a few items, but only when left to his own devices, and he is a counter surfer and will sniff out anything left out on the side. I think Charlie will benefit from an active home with another well socialised dog and an experienced owner.
Hope this helps xx

Had the pleasure of walking darling Charlie at ncdh today with my 3 daughters. What a sweetie he is. Loved having a run but wanted to spend most of the time rolling around in the grass and having fusses. He would make a great addition to a loving family.

Hi, my wife and I put an application in for Charlie about a month ago but were told that he had already had an application approved, did that fall through? And is our application still under consideration?

Hi Steve, Charlie did have an application approved and went to the home. That fell through and he came back to us. He went on a little holiday with an experiences volunteer for some assessment and we now know a bit more about Charlie boy I believe they are taking applications from scratch but I could be wrong. I suggest phoning up tomorrow to find out If you take a read further up a write up was posted in blue font about what was said about him on his respite adventure Hi, my wife and I put an application in for Charlie about a month ago but were told that he had already had an application approved, did that fall through?
