Please whisper a gentle welcome to Sherry
Sherry arrived as a stray, we have no idea where she came from, and however she got out of there, it wasn't a moment too soon. Sherry was in a very distressing condition when she arrived, painfully emaciated, and on vets advice Sherry was clipped as soon as she arrived. They removed 1.7 kilo's of filthy, matted fur from her.
Sherry is microchipped, but the 'chip hasn't been registered, so we don't have any information about her, but the vets have estimated her age at around 4-5 years.
Erin, who belongs to one of the staff at Newport City Dogs Home, is just 6 months old, and she weighs 5 kilo's more than Sherry.
Sherry should gain weight slowly and steadily but at the moment her stomach is so small she is struggling to eat at all. The staff have been tempting her with tiny morsels, but it's going to be a long, slow process to restore Sherry to full health.
We spent some time with Sherry yesterday, gently getting to know her. When she hears the word 'sit' she drops, cowering, into a half 'down' position, so we won't be using that word in her hearing any more. She obviously has very distressing associations with being told what to do. All Sherry will know from now on is kindness.
Sherry's past life is mirrored in her sad eyes, but we are determined to make them sparkle again..
Although Sherry is very nervous and anxious, her spirit hasn't been completely dampened, and she did get comfort from being close to us once we had gained her trust.
But without a doubt it will take a while before Sherry realises that humans can be kind, so we left it to the professionals to persuade Sherry that Newport City Dogs Home is a nice place, where she can have fun and relax...
Meeting the girls - newbie Millie and Erin Poodle...
Erin showing our newbies how to invite and initiate play
Sherry won't be leaving Newport City Dogs Home until the staff and vets are sure that she is well on the road to recovery, both physically and emotionally, but they will take applications on her immediately. We will be getting to know Sherry's likes and dislikes over the coming days and weeks, and it's unlikely that any applications will be approved until Sherry's assessment is completed, but the staff have already requested that any potential rehomers should have experience of a dog with a pretty high-maintenance coat and that they should be able to provide a reference from a groomer. All the normal checks - vet references and homechecks - will also apply.
if you'd like to meet her please contact NEWPORT CITY DOGS HOME for more information. TEL 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm, on weekdays, 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 3.30pm on Saturday. Please note: the home is CLOSED on Sundays.
Rehoming fees are from £120 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and include 1st vaccination, flea & worm treatment, neutering and microchip.
