This very special girl should need no introduction. Please give the warmest Friends welcome to Bambi
Our Facebook and social media followers will know Bambi's story. But for those who don't, this is what happened...
From our FB post, 29th September
'We are asking for your prayers tonight. Our warden Kathryn was called out yesterday late afternoon to attend an injured dog, found lying in the road in the Wentloog area. She was in very poor condition, covered in engine oil, grease and blood, conscious but not moving and she has two large open wounds. Kathryn approached her, and she just rested her head in Kathryn's hands, surrendering herself to her fate. She was rushed to Croeso vets in Cardiff where she was stabilised, and was then taken straight to Summerhill Vets in Newport where she spent the night on intravenous fluids. Although she is holding her own, she won't be out of the woods for some time. CDH has asked us to cover her veterinary fees, and if anyone can spare a few pounds we would be very grateful. You can donate directly to our vet fund via the link below.
This precious babe also needs a name and we would like your suggestions! She is a very pretty bambi sized lurcher, and we want to bless her with a name that will signify happy new beginnings as she puts her past behind her, and learns what it is to be truly loved'.
We had the most incredible response, she touched the hearts of so many people. But the next few hours and days were very tense.
From our FB post, 30th September
We have spoken with the vets today, and whilst she is holding her own, her injuries, both internal and external are complex, and we spent a long discussing her options for treatment.
She has two very large external wounds, one of which they will be attempting to repair surgically tomorrow. Lurchers don't have lots of excess skin, the vets explained that they will be taking pieces from where she can afford to lose some, and making a 'patchwork' repair. The other external wound is simply too large to cover with skin grafts, and will need to be left open to heal over time. This carries a high risk of infection, which can become life-threatening, and she will need to be nursed in the most hygienic environment possible, and her immune system and general health will need to be supported as she heals.
The bad news is that Xrays have shown that the damage to her rear leg is quite devastating. We discussed options for surgical repair, and the vets have advised us that at best the chances of a successful repair are less than 50%, her recovery and recuperation will be protracted, from 12 - 15 weeks, and is likely to be painful and stressful. This is highly likely to compromise her general health and welbeing, which is counter-indicated given her other wounds. If the surgery is not successful, she will need to have her leg amputated. The other option is immediate amputation.
We have discussed the options in depth with the staff at CDH, and with the vets, and everyone has agreed that it is in her best interests to amputate the damaged limb to give her the best chance of survival.
So we ask you to continue praying for her. Provided she has another good night tonight and the vets consider she is stable enough she will undergo surgery tomorrow.
This has been a dreadful 24 hours, but she is still with us, still fighting, and we hope to have more positive news tomorrow. Please please keep her in your prayers, she needs all the help we can give her'.
We were heartbroken, our precious babe wasn't out of the woods, not by a long way. The vets had warned us that one of her most challenging issues was protecting her open wounds, to ensure that they didn't get infected. Septicaemia was always going to be a risk, and given her general condition, this could have devastating consequences. We were so grateful to one of our most trusted volunteers, who offered to take Bambi into her own home following her surgery, and give her a safe and quiet place to recuperate.
Less than a week later, we were able to share this news....

UPDATE ON BAMBI
'Here's the news you have been waiting for....
Bambi is at last out of danger. She tolerated surgery fairly well, and spent an extra few days in the vets, but the vets were happy for her to be discharged to a home environment to begin her recouperation and rehabilitation. It's all about time and tlc now....
One of our most trusted Purple Pilgrims is caring for Bambi and she sent us a lovely update.
Bambi is living with a little foster brother and sister, and has shown nothing but the sweetest temperament. It's clear she has had to compete for food in the past, she still doesn't understand that there will be another meal along soon, and she is rather bewildered by all the 'normal' home comforts that are being lavished on her. She is very quiet, but is already giving gentle wags of her tail to show her surprise and gratitude for even the smallest kindness.
We would like to thank everyone who donated towards her surgeries, post op care and rehab, to everyone who whispered silent prayers for her, and to you all for helping us bless her with a new name to start her new life.
Bambi would like to say 'thank you' to everyone who has held her in their thoughts....'
Bambi has been so tenderly cared for, she has wanted for nothing, and is living in the lap of luxury!
Here she is, taking her first tentative steps, learning how to manage on three legs!
And yesterday, Bambi's loving foster peeps sent us this fabulous update...
My First Run on the Beach!
Bambi is still under the care of our vets, and she won't be available for rehoming until her foster mum is happy, and the vets are content that she is well enough to leave her care.
As soon as Bambi's foster mum, the vets, and the staff at the home agree that she is well enough to meet potential rehomers, Bambi will be able to spend a few hours at the Home as 'office dog' so people can meet her by appointment only, and complete an application form.
The staff won't be taking any applications in the meantime, so please watch this page for updates rather than contact the home, we promise to keep everyone in the Bambi loop!
