Hi all,
Sorry for not posting any updates until now - we have been having too much fun getting to know our new dog!
That hunk Max has settled into his new house and new family sweetly. Despite his pretences each morning, we know that he has been sleeping in bed with his new sister, Lily - Maaaax...! He loves his walks, and wants to know exactly what is going on in all of the gardens along the way. No stone is left unturned by this nosey neighbour.
I was a little surprised yesterday morning when he was grouchy with a young spaniel we encountered, and felt a bit foolish having only just said to it's owner "Don't worry about him, he's friendly". D'oh! Anyway, the moral of the story is that we still have a bit to learn about each other, but that will come in time.
Max definitely does not like being grabbed and kissed on the face, and has squealed and run away to hide a couple of times when I have done this to him. I can't tell if he has pain or fear from previous experiences, but I've learned my lesson and will treat him very gently around his face from now on. He's going for a once-over with the vet to be sure that there is nothing to worry about. Knowing that he was scared of me at those moments was heartbreaking, but I'm sure that he has figured out by now that there is nothing but love for him in this house.
He is so adorable with his new dad. The hubby comes home from work and Max immediately flips onto his back at his feet, tail bashing against the carpet. He also loves his new big bro, Joe, but Joe is not too keen on Max trying to eat all of his toys. Maaaax...!
It was reported hat Max had separation anxiety, but he has been totally fine when left on his own in the house. So long as he is getting walks, food and cuddles he can deal with an hour or two of alone time. He's a very good boy. The test will come next week when we go on holiday and leave him with my mum. Admitedly the timing of his adoption could have been better, but I think that being a bit unsettled for a week is still preferable to waiting at CDH for us to get back.
I'm going to try to post some pics now; bear with me while I figure out how to do it. Just one last word though before I sign off: you volunteers are incredible people, and I am so grateful that you gave Max all of those reasons to be happy during his crisis. Your updates are also crucial for to those of us who are going through the adoption process. Thank you so much, and keep up the good work xxx
Big love from us, Katy (and Max)
